Cushing

Wow, this guy is the best player on our defense. Yes, right now he is. Over Mario and Demeco. This dude is a super stud.

He is a beast. He needs to cut back on the boneheaded plays he makes from time to time. He's had like 2 or 3 personal fouls and got away with another one today. But other than that he has been fantastic, I agree.

I like that nastiness though. It lets other teams know we wont take any of their crap.

I was going to say the same. He is great right now and flys to the ball but the meatheaded plays might kill ya at times and he has gotten away with a few

He's really been impressive and the most surprising thing to me is that he's looked better in the NFL than he did in the games I saw him play at USC IMO, of course that wasn't too many games but then he's only played in 4 here.
But he seems quicker, more mobile than the college tapes I saw on him ?

I agree, he looks like he's as fast as a linebacker will ever need to be. People look at his 260 weight and assume he can't move, from the looks of it he's got high end linebacker speed.

By the way, how come when we lose we're soft but when we win and Cushing is busting skulls were "meatheads" playing out of control?

Anyone else thrilled we passed on the other USC LBs? Cushing has been rock solid. He was in on or one step away from almost EVERY tackle I saw today.

Requesting a picture of Cushing posed with his arms wide open after he made the safety.

+1 internets for anyone who is awesome enough to find it. I'm having trouble right now.

Cushing is going to be a bad a$$ player, he just needs to watch out for the illegal hits.

I couldn't find that pic, but there are some great ones here.

Here is a good one of the safety:

I like this one too.

There's definitely a lot of upside with Cushing.
Considering that this first 4 games was his "preseason" I can't wait to see him in the regular season.

I'm glad they didn't call the personal foul on him, but he's gotta keep it clean, otherwise his good plays can turn big negatives into 15 yard positives.

All of our LB's are looking pretty tough, the trick now is to get the DL and DB's to match them.

Overall the D looked good today but how much of that is because of the terrible offense of the Raiders? I hope it's a confidence booster because Arizona is going to present a huge challenge, especially to the DB's.

Hitting people and being aggressive = good
Shoving QB in head and late hits=not good and costly

Pretty easy difference

Cushing is a special player. I thought he was the safe pick when we drafted him but now I think he's got the highest ceiling of anyone available at our pick. He's got a special combination of size and athleticism plus he's got a high motor and plays with an attitude. We need to lock up DeMeco so that we can one day be featured on NFL Network's top 10 LBer unit. This group is young but they're gonna be special if we give them some help at DT and some backup at safety.

Cushing/Ryans/Diles oh my!!!

Honestly our LB corps is turning into one of the best in the NFL. I think for the first time in our history we have one group on defense that is not going to be a consistent issue. I really think we are one good DT from a good d-line and 1 corner / safety away from a good secondary.

Definately glad it's Cushing, not Matthews. He had what I saw as his best game of a 4th(3rd?) NFL start. I believe we'll see even better play as his start count rises.

On a side note, I thought it was yet another week that Dunta failed to prove HIS worth.

I know some hate it but I can't help but think of Cushlash when he makes a tackle

I almost want an avatar with him lighting someone up with CUSHLASH!! at the bottom of it

He is so freaking much fun to watch play!! He's everywhere, and just shows so much energy and excitement! Just simply awesome to watch, just like Demeco!

I say we call him janitor cuz that dude cleans up rb and TEs! The middle of the d is fierce! They just about make up for weak dt play. Demeco just points him in the right direction and the guy blazes a trail to the play. Awesome day for Cush again!

I'm pleasantly stunned.

I didn't like the Cushing pick back in April. What I knew of him at USC didn't impress me.

When he got hurt in training camp, I thought: "Here we go. Let the bust begin."

When Kubiak said Cushing would be starting the first game in spite of being a rookie who hadn't seen one minute of playing time in the preseason, I figured it was because he was the first pick and not because he'd earned the position.

But Cushing has looked every bit the part of an impact player.

Like I said, I'm pleasantly stunned.

Cushing is an animal!!!! I love is nasty demeanor. Awesome awesome lineback!! We needed someone like on the D-fence

Because the Texans as a team don't bring it every game. Cushing seems to bring it every game. He's part of the solution, rather than part of the problem.

Slamming TE Miller putting him out of the game and strait biatch slappin Russell on that QB hit made my week. :bat:

Yeah, lets not forget Diles. He had some amazing backfield tackles today

As much as I like Diles & believed he would be the starter opposite of Adibi before we took Cushing, I still believe that Adibi has a much higher upside than Diles. When he finally gets it all together, I think Adibi will make our linebacking crew even better than they are now.

Also, I too felt that Cushing was a mistake when we took him, but he's definitely changing my mind.

i always gets scared when i see cush blitzing and the qb gets rid of the ball before he gets there cause he always hits him anyways... and then i thought today.. man thats what we need on defense.. someone with some fire and aggression.. and since now we havent really had a player like that on the D... super pumped to see more of this guy play

cushing has definitely been a suprise to me. I thought he would be average at best, but kind of safe. Not make too many mistakes. Kind of like greenwood without the comedy of errors. If we had to ignore safety in the first round, i'm glad its for him. Seems like he gets it.

With about 3 minutes left in the game I watched 56 and 59 standing on the sideline ready to go back in discussing something about the scheme. Both talking adamantly and trying to work something else out. It was beautiful. If you get excited about something like that you're missing something.

Barrett wasn't it you that fought with me tooth and nail (at ITB.com) over selecting Cushing as a Sam because Sam's are the fullback of the defense and have relatively no appreciable impact on the game, thus they are not impact players and we would be better served selecting another position?

Honestly, the most impressive play from Cushing today, IMO, was in the first half, Jamarcus Russell rolls right on a bootleg and the fullback tried to cut Cushing and he took on the cut protecting his knees, and although his momentum from protecting his knees was spinning him inside he redirected mid movement and spun outside to prevent Russell from getting around the corner and keeping pressure on him.

Althletically and football savvy wise, the best play I saw out there today.

At the moment but its still way to soon to say that for sure.

Why would Mathews come off the field alot? He plays OLB in a 3/4. The rest of youre statement is alittle premature.

Matthews plays special teams and he's not an everydown starter. And Cushing is an everydown starter leading rookies in tackles. I don't see whats premature about what I said.

I can live with a mistake every once in awhile. I can live with a late hit penalty once in awhile. It will get to the point that the QBs will be thinking about him hitting them. The TE across the middle will be thinking about him hitting them, too. He's going to force TOs because of his intensity.

Mathews has been battling a hamstring injury since training camp. If it werent for that he would be the fulltime starter. He really hasnt had the chance to show his worth yet. To say Crushing is a bigger faster better tackler than Mathews is premature.

Sure, it's probably premature to say that Dallas Clark is a better pass catching TE than Bennie Joppru. Just wait until Joppru heals up and has an opportunity to prove himself. Then the Colts will regret what they have at TE!
