Texans working out safeties

According to Alan Burge the Texans worked out a safety on Tuesday.

In a sea of frustration this is a nugget of positivity. If there was one glaring weakness on Sunday it was (and has been throughout preseason) the safety play.

I'm glad to see the staff has looked at it and agrees that something has to change from a personnel standpoint.

More and more we're seeing the FO making the personnel decisions that make sense and I hope this continues as our team is upgraded throughout the season.

The one difference in opinion that I have currently is that they released Buster Davis from the PS instead of Chaun Thompson from the active roster. This move suggests that we could expect to see this safety added soon.

Hm... I dont know what to say really... They've had MONTHS to try out safeties, but it takes them a regular season loss to realize that this is a big need?

This is probably my biggest problem with this franshise, a stubborn HC/GM refusing to change their 'grand scheme' when the plan is obviously not working out as it was intended.

Finding a secondary should have happened before the season started, not once it's started, but... better late than never, problem is, does 'working out safeties' constitute 'late' ?
 
This is probably an insurance move in case Wilson doesn't come back right away. And Ferguson wasn't very impressive this Sunday.
But then, who was?

And after week one is over, they can pay a guy week-to-week instead of being on the hook for a whole year's worth of salary.

And looking at the F/A list, I don't see anyone that jumps out as a "gotta have" guy at safety.

I don't see this as good news. Either Wilson's injury is much more serious than we've been told or this shows they have no clue how to evaluate their own talent- I mean, who among us didn't know that safety play was going to be an absolute travesty. There were guys like Sean Jones available this off-season that could have been had for near the vet minimum but they chose to rely on Dominique Barber, Nick Ferguson, and Brandon Harrison. I will prepare for the realization from them that in 2013 they maybe Casey Studdard isn't the answer at guard!
 
But the safety they worked out is a no name and will end up on the practice squad. When are we going to get someone who will not "just want to be paid" and will play like a champion.:barman:

If you're talking about Ventrone, he may be a no name, but he doesn't have any practice squad eligibility, so he'll either be on the 53 man roster, or he won't be signed.
 
Becuase week 2 of the regular season is prime picking time for the NFL talent tree. I can't believe they think we need a safety...we were so solid there at the end of last season. :sarcasm:
 
Then what do you make of the fact that they cleared a practice squad spot? Even if he doesn't have eligibility someone active could be moved to it.

I read the John McClain transcript yesterday... he says that the safety need is FAR from a big deal for us. His reasoning? I am not making this up... "our only points came from a safety."

Seriously. He said that.
 
I said it before, Chrris mcallister,if healthy makes too much sense as a safety/matchup corner. He's a big corner that can tackle who has lost a step,but would be a great safety like woodson/lake mold. Theey could stay in base more because he could defend the the 3rd wr or Y-flex te. He is better than the teams 2 and 3rd corner. The team would be better with him as the 2nd corner or safety opposite wilson.

Busing. I'm not saying he's setting the world on fire, I'm just saying he's making big plays against whoever he's faced so far this year. If he hasn't earned playing time (and lots of it) then I just don't know what to think anymore. If he gets PT and gets burned, what exactly has changed? Nothing except the number and the player. However, if he keeps his surge going and does well what changes? Probably the entire outlook of the defense.
 
Second week of the year...safety time for the Texans!

Christ there was a decent crop of FA safeties out there this off-season and they stuck with what they had on staff. Ugh.

I am getting the feeling now that the past few years has been a house built of cards and week one this year was a blast of air(understatement) and we're left figuring out....that this was just a ****ing house of cards.

He doesn't do well when he isn't taking his opinion directly from the coaches or one of his contacts. You would think he would have a better eye for the game after watching so much football over the years but I don't see it myself. If you try hard to catch his comments that are off the top of his head, most of them are baffling.

By establishing many contacts over many years that will tell you things they will not tell others. Many things John gets blasted for saying is what he has repeated from a source. He damaged himself with Texans when he did not ride the managment bandwagon on the selection of Mario Williams. Several of his comments on radio and in the paper were pretty negative and he was shut out for a while. It did not help him when the trio of Young, Bush and Mario turned out as they did making management look good.
 
getting a safety now is like a bandaid on a bullet wound. That ship has sailed. Primary offseason acquisition? Ok, now we are talking. No name safeties? PointlesS?

The philosophy has been that safeties are not a big ticket item for our team. We have gone with interchangable average guys who at best could be deemed okay. Probably would have been too if the Dline, linebackers and CBs had been good. We missed with Weaver, Pbuc and others. I think Diles doing so well as a 7th rounder blinded Smith into thinking we can do well with lower picks and you can sometimes roll a seven. I think Smithiakput our figurative necks on this past draft and off season. If our FA Smith works and Cushing and Barwin do what they are projected everything gets immediately better. If one of the DTs steps up and we begin to shut down the run, I will not even care if we get penetration from that position, it will seal this as a much improved team.
 
Maybe this will work out.

Pretty much the only thing Smith has done a decent job at is bringing in stopgap street free agents mid-season who perform well for 1 season.

I've never understood the credit given to Rob Ryan. Yeah, under his coordination, the Raiders had one top-10 (top-3 actually) finish in yards allowed, but the other four years he was in Oakland, they finished 30th, 27th, 22nd and 27th in that category, and 31st, 25th, 26th, and 24th in points allowed. Heck - even in the year they finished 3rd in yards allowed, they were in the bottom half of the league in points allowed (18th). Admittedly, circumstances in Oakland are "unique", so I'm not saying he sucks, just that I don't any reason to say he's much if, if at all, above average.

Why aren't they putting #40 Busing on the field more, he seems to be making a lot of plays on the ball? Has anyone seen his downside?

Seems like he's been moved around a lot due to size issues, but the reason he seems to be a ball hawk is that he was at Miami as well. He's too small for a LB, but right size for a safety.

Anyone on why we aren't giving him more of a shot, maybe he practices like crap and plays like a king?

Pfft! He's more into his movies than football. If you've ever read one of his "chat" transcripts you'd notice he's clueless about football. Plus, you'd likely be dumber after reading the entire thing.

Do you want a Jerry Jones that thinks he knows about football and is constantly involved, does an owner have to know football or does he just have to be successful. Honestly, how do you end up an owner? Do you just fork out the money?
 
Way to go Texans!!! Nothing like waiting til after the season starts and all the quality talent is gone to start looking for critical pieces to the puzzle.
