Busing the best SS on the team?

John Busing has impressed me all preseason, and no time more than tonight. After seeing Barber again be out of position and overrun plays, and Harrison again out of position and looking lost, I was about ready to throw something at the TV. Then Busing comes in and viola - good safety play. Not only should the guy make the team, he needs to be the starter alongside Wilson on opening day. He might not be the second coming of Ronnie Lott, but he is a million times better than Barber, and Harrison who both need to be standing in line at the unemployment office.

Add to that his excellent ST play, and the guy was an awesome find by Rick Smith and company.

I like Busing a lot.
But will have to take a really long look at him!

Don't think we'll miss anything with Harrison gone.
Dude is weak compare to his size.

Barber... I don't know yet. I'd like to have a better player than him for sure.
But I think Barber still has a shot to develop (maybe).

Barber and Harrison together = Matt Stevens. Hell, Stevens was slower than my Grandmother. His tatoos could outrun him. But he was better then both of these guys put together. I've never seen two safety's more out of position and over running plays, taking bad angles and basically just having more major suckitude than Barber and Harrison. They need to get off the field and open a law firm because as football players they stink.

LOL, how can they chase after the ambulance being that slow!?!

I hope Busing makes the team. He deserves it with his play but I still dont think he is ready to be a starter. Does he ahve any practice squad eligability? If so I would imagine he thats where he will end up. We have got to find some safeties off the waiver wire better than what we currently have.

I don't know if he's the best SS on the team, but at least he wraps up when tackling. Our tackling technique is horrible.

#1 sign of a soft camp (you play like you practice)... Hopefully when the season starts and teams are playing at full speed, the tackling will improve, but even if it does the tackling is going to hurt us early on. (maybe Kubiak's "relaxed camps" are the reason for our slow starts in the regular season....)

But RJ says wehave to hard of a camp, say it aint so that he is full of it?

He is a fourth year guy, no more PS for him. If he doesn't make it and Harrison does I will be pissed.

Maybe they are a reason that we play so well late in the season though, eh? If we could only figure out how to do both. (sigh)

Yeah, it's like "damned if you do, damned if you don't".......but this team needs to find a happy medium.

I am scared as hell about the start of this season though, because we are counting on ALOT of starters that didn't have much playing time this preseason (Pitts, Myers, Cushing, Reeves, Walters, and Dunta) and I think the Jets could be a scary opening opponent. Our first 3 of 4 games are at home, so if we start out slow again....our playoff chances are SCREWED (since we'll be playing the majority of the games left on the road). We need to win 3 of those 4 games.

I was being as sarcastic as a 3rd generation sarcastic could be.

Yeah, I know....I was just posting that for others to view,

Dick Justice is a hack and really needs to be let go from his job......he sucks at it. The moment he jumped on the franchise for running a "hard camp" was the moment I for surely knew he had absolutely no idea of what the hell he was talking about as far as the Houston Texans go.

That guy is CLUELESS and is a embarrassment to the paper he writes for. I've called him out on his "fact checking" a couple of times and he doesn't even respond. He's just butt hurt that they fired his buddy, so now he uses his position at the Chron to attack the team any chance he gets. (honestly, he'd be the happiest guy in Houston if this team went 1-15 next year) I've been stationed at many places across this country and I can honestly say.....anybody who pays for that paper is being robbed of their money (the quality is absolute crap compared to other papers), unless he's talking about baseball.....Justice shouldn't be writing anything for the Chronicle.

He won't make it.

Harrison will eek out the spot, which I think (like you guys do) that it's wrong.

A guy like Busing, who shows up in GAMES, is worth keeping.

But in the end, they'll cut Busing and say "It was a really hard decision."

I hope I'm wrong, though. But I think sometimes NFL Coaches make dumb moves when it comes to things like this. I really feel that they think a guy like Harrison is more talented and just hasn't blossomed yet. So they keep hanging onto a guy like Harrison, trying to not cut the guy and regret it down the road. Basic "over thinking," IMO.

Busing should easily make the team over Brandon Harrison, not just for his safety play, but for his special teams play as well. We've seen similar displays from Bulman, DelJuan, and our Colorado State embassy.

And you base this on what exactly?

Unfortunately, you may be right. I think Busing is our best option at SS even though he may have some deficiencies, they are less than our other options. Problem is that in TexanLand players often get "appointed" to their spot on the team without earning it and generally there's only 2 ways they get moved out --- by injury or if they fumble the ball.

It's hard to get hyped about a guy who does well against 3s and 4s but it was refreshing to see competent safety play from a guy in a Texans uniform even under those circumstances.

Busing is pushing for a starting spot. A guy that does well against backups or a guy who disappears against starters (Barber)?

I didn't think Tampa was his strongest game. As a matter of Fact.... I was hoping they had made up their minds before that game.

Busing was by far the most impressive player this preseason that nobody had expectations of beforehand. He didn't get much press on here before PS which means he was probably thought of as camp fodder but he sure impressed the heck out of me with his special teams play.

I love it when we can manage to nab guys like this, his emergence reminds me of another hard worker in Tim Bulman. Lets hope he too can contribute in the regular season.

Even if he was playing against 3's and 4's, he has demonstrated the instinct of knowing where to be on the field.

If he was a rookie... an undrafted player, I would agree. This would be enough. But he's going into his 4th season. I think we need more than instinct.

Don't get me wrong. I do believe his play this preseason warrants a spot on this team. Not because of Tampa's game... I think Tampa was his worse. After 4 years in the league, I want to see him "excell" against the 3's & 4's. Like Grossman did. Like Jacoby did.

Exactly. It's a rare sight so it's refreshing to see when it happens. We've drafted 5 late round safeties since 2004 and only 1 of them is still on our active roster (Earl, Brown, Harrison, Barber, Nolan).

Did anyone remember when Spencer Tillman said he reminded
BoEason04.jpg
him of another player he played with before but he couldn't remember the guys name? How many old school Oiler fans thought he was talking about this guy:

Or Even This guy (Bo Eason):

He said Bill Bates, pretty quickly, and IMO it was more the #40 than anything else.

Busing was popping out to us in the stands during week one of practice. He keep making plays. Plus looked bigger and stronger than the other safeties.

Question. Was Busing a FA that Smith had his eye on and went after during the off season, or was he basically let go (not resigned) by the Bengals and we just picked him up as an extra camp body? Either way, he has been a bright spot during PS and I hope he plays as well (or better) during RS.

Might as well give him the start at SS. I mean, rookie QB, so he has a bit of leeway, and he has looked very good.

I think we are overvaluing him a bit. He looks like Tarzan compared to Jane (Harrison) but he may not be any better than Matt Stevens once the real games get started. Don't shoot the messenger!

This tells me how weak the SS position is.

Busing is a useful player (ST) but he's not a starter on a playoff team. IMO

I'd take Jane over Harrison. I saw too many plays where he was a bystander. He made good plays, but more often than not, I didn't see him do anything close to ball-hawking.
