After one game....

So I finally got to sit down and re-watch the first preseason game in HD which makes a big difference in being able to see the whole field.

I watched every snap with the first team and isolating each individual player, I re-watched every play 11 times. Here's my assessment through the first teams snaps:

Offense:

Schaub Looks comfortable, accurate and in sync. The one sack he took was a smart play. Slaton miss reads the block or doesn't get out for the dump off in time and tucking the ball was the correct play. I noticed a few plays where he could have gone down field and chose to go with the safer read but still for a good gain. Often times it was situational. For example, on 2nd and 21 after a penalty he chooses to hit his man 10 yrds over the middle in between a LB and a Safety instead of going for it all with 1 on 1 coverage down field. In that instance he's giving the team a manageable 3rd down and keeps the drive alive. "Could he be more aggressive in that situation? You bet he could." But he made a good read.

Slaton Due to less than good line play, his runs were mostly stuffed. When he had a chance, he got outside and made a play. His pass blocking still seems to be suspect at times.

C. Brown Good pass blocker, looked quick with good vision and most of all, power. Horse collar or not, he did cough it up once. So there's that.

D. Brown Contrary to what I heard on Lance Z's podcast, I thought his run blocking looked solid. Pass blocking looked good too. You can really see some improvement from last year already. His athleticism makes up for sloppy technique at times. Just wait until he gets more crisp technically and puts it all together. Nice reach at 26 thus far.

Studdard I'm seeing what Kubiak likes in Studdard finally. The nasty streak. What I'm not seeing in Studdard is his ability. He seems improved in pass blocking from last year but near useless as a run blocker. Dale Murphy put it best: "I don't like to see guys running around looking for someone to block." What he means is, better to not miss the first guy. Block him instead. He doesn't seem to get it. At least not yet. His aggressive nature kept the Texans from turning the ball over however. When Brown fumbled Studdard dove into that ball with no regard for anything else. That's what Kubiak is talking about. That's what Bush wants from his guys too. I still don't want to see this guy active on Sundays.

White Chris looked serviceable at least. Decent in pass pro. Decent in run blocking. Mentally he seems to read his blocks well and knows where he's supposed to be.

Briesel I don't know what it is about him, but it's really hard to find anything to criticize him about. He doesn't wow you ever, but I don't see him making mistakes really. His technique is sloppy but not enough to seem to be a factor. All I can figure is he is helped immensely by lining up next to Winston. His pass pro was suspect at times last year but against the Chiefs, he looked fine. ... Against the Chiefs. EDIT I double checked. as it turns out, Briesel miss read the blitz. He was at fault for the sack on Schaub in the first series.

Winston I know everybody is in love with Winston and you can really see why on run plays. WOW! He can seal off the entire backside all by himself and on plays when he has a TE over him... well just forget about it. I have issues with his inconsistency in pass protection but no one seems to think that is a concern. [He helped us loose the Indy game.[i/]) I digress. I am a fan and he looked good in pass pro against the Chiefs....

Daniels Good routes, above average blocking. We're good, good, good at this position. Dreesen was in to block and did a good job as well. Alex Gibbs is a Golden God.

WR's I'm lumping all the WR's together because it can all be summed up by how consistent they are as a unit. Johnson, Walter and Anderson get open and catch the ball. They all block well enough. The only extra note I'll add is Walter on an end around leaves something to be desired. He doesn't seem to have the burst to make that play work. (Davis was in with the first team as well but didn't make any catches that I saw.)

Overall The offense overall already looks well oiled in the passing game. The run blocking seems to be lacking some sync but with 2 starters out and it being the first preseason game that is acceptable. It was one of those situations where there was almost always 1 guy on the O Line making a mistake on each play allowing a defensive player to stuff the run. Usually missing a block or missing a read on who to block (Studdard). If all 5 guys aren't perfectly in sync in can really break down. I want to give praise to the system because you really have to appreciate how flawless it is when it's run properly. Gary Kubiak and Alex Gibbs, you are Golden Gods.

I didn't know it was filmed in HD. Interesting. It didn't appear to me to be available on the HD channel of KTRK. I looked through my HD channels for it and couldn't find it. I'd have liked to have seen that.

I think it was on the Chiefs broadcast in HD on NFLN yesterday AM.

NFLN takes the local HD footage and replays it. The Texans game was replayed 9 AM Sunday morning. I definitely recorded NFLN's replay and deleted the local broadcast. You just have to endure the Chiefs talking heads.

HD or not, channel 13 should be embarrassed. That was pathetic! You'd think local talking heads would at least know the local team and it's progressions.

Good stuff, thanks for the post and perspective. I won't even dock you any cool points for mis-spelling Schaub because I know it's a just a typo. :texflag:

I think it was on the Chiefs broadcast in HD on NFLN yesterday AM.

I watched the Chiefs broadcast as well, but it wasn't entirely HD. There were parts of the game that were shot in HD and parts that were not. I'm guessing they only had one or two cameras capable of shooting in HD, and the rest were just standard definition.

Speaking of the Chiefs broadcast their broadcast team was awful. In the second quarter when our starters went out they continued to mistake Orlovsky for Schaub. I was a bit surprised to see how long Haley left his starting defense in for as well, but I'm guessing that's because he wants them to get as many reps in the new scheme as possible.

Slaton Due to less than good line play, his runs were mostly stuffed. When he had a chance, he got outside and made a play. His pass blocking still seems to be suspect at times. Slaton may do better in a 2 back set as D will need a second to find ball. in one second Slaton is past the scrimmage line.

I think offense is going to be incredible. Other responses above in BOLD.

Defense

Well the 4-3 under is officially in effect. Diles has had to move over to fill Cushing's spot at SAM and it may have hindered some of this unit's fluidity but overall against the Chiefs I'm already seeing improvement.

Smith Some will probably argue that he didn't seem disruptive but I would disagree. He is a massive[/] upgrade at that position. He showed burst, was double teamed, penetrated, and caused disruption. He looks really quick and strong when he slides inside on passing situations. It seemed that he would get hung up outside at times but I noticed him shedding the block and still making a play on the ball carrier.

Okoye It's still early, and I am still positive but I didn't see much from him against the run. I want to say he's looking good against the pass sometimes. Sometimes he's not. When he is, he's exploding up field and collapsing the pocket with his speed. Against the run... he's easily moved out of the play. He's quick to recover (like Smith) and still makes his way to the ball carrier but he didn't seem to be a factor in stuffing the interior at all. He seems to lack strength at the point of attack. Perhaps he becomes an excellent pass rush specialist on the interior. Perhaps he gets better against the run. Perhaps not. If all he is successful at is hurrying the pass rusher I think he can still be effective. He may just have to be used as a situational player.

Robinson YES! Explosive! Disruptive! Strong! Mean! DelJuan looked great. He was constantly man handling his guy and getting in the backfield. Runs, passes, it didn't matter. He looked really good. You can expect him to be your starting 3 tech DT.

Williams looks good. Mostly, what I saw that excited me the most was more a scheme thing than his actual play. He was 1 on 1 a lot! I think the improved quickness of this defense on the D Line is really going to show off how good he can be. He's good against the run as well.

Barwin only in on two plays with the first team but we all know how he looked as the game went on. You can already see his quickness and aggressive attitude.

Diles moved into the SAM spot for Cushing and did a decent job. I saw a few slow reads etc but mostly he was serviceable. All the LB's are looking more aggressive.

Ryans seemed in good form. I didn't see anything that shocked me like "wow he's twice as good!" he looked good. Quck to the ball. Sure tackler. Didn't see any blitzing from the first team. So not much to comment on.

Adibi Also looked quick and comfortable. Not much to comment on other than all three are flying to the ball. Adibi never seemed out of position. Looked good.

Bennett Dale and I were discussing how strange it felt to watch our secondary be near their receivers. It reminded me of when we first saw Schaub in action and how strange it felt to see him looking down field or looking off defenders. I'm trying to avoid being too giddy about my assessment of this unit but my god! Bennett was with his man and making plays on the ball!!! Like a defensive back! He didn't break up any passes but I can assure you our defense is going to be better because the opposing QB's are going to actually have to get it in there on a spot. He looked good overall.

McCain Same basic assessment. I dont remember a ball being thrown his way except once and he and Demeco MADE A PLAY ON THE BALL and broke it up. I wish I could say more but as I've already said, I'm giddy about them just running with the receivers!

Quinn Quinn and McCain both look very comfortable. He was in on nickle packages and didn't have any balls thrown his way. He attacked on a screen pass. You can already see that he's got the mental aspect under control. I think he's going to be a hell of a player.

Barber was tough. Taking on big TE's and flying to the ball. He seems really small. McClain is right that he's better in the box but he didn't look lost in the secondary.

Wilson is flying around. He's got really good instincts. You can see him reacting really quickly and making tackles. I'm very excited about having him back. Again, giddy, we've never had a real FS. I'm very excited about what I've seen from this unit.

Overall The thing that really stood out to me was how comfortable everyone looked. It's only the first preseason game and they all seem to know their assignments and where to go and why. The aggressive nature that we always hear about seems to actually be as basic (so far) as it's been described. The scheme (so far) is very simple and it lends to they players thinking less and acting more. They all seemed much faster. I'm very excited to see what this defense looks like in another 3 weeks. I'm sure there will be more complex blitzes installed but overall I expect it to look similar to what we saw. Based on what I've seen thus far, I do expect the change in scheme to make this defense improved enough to make us a very good team. Is it Saturday yet?

I want smart plays from Schaub as we know he can put up yards. with this corps of W/R and backs who can catch, 3rd and 11 should be a 1st down.

I think it's a safe bet that his play gets smarter and smarter the more time he spends under center. It's exciting to think that as get's even more comfortable that there are even bigger plays to be made!

I want to see [brown] 2nd half of season against a good DE
Well you'll certainly get your chance. We play several good ones in this division.

This is all Myers has to do. Just be steady and keep guys where they should be.
I think Meyers is much more athletic and can be much more effective in fact. But White is certainly serviceable. The thought that Caldwell is an option as well makes me giddy!

I was concerned on the sack Schaub took. Was Winston at fault? I know Slaton missed but was it Eric's guy? I was thinking a safety got the sack but not sure. If yes, that was Steve's error.
They overloaded that side. I went back and checked it and I was wrong. Slaton didn't miss the block. There were 3 blockers, Winston on the outside, Slaton to his left and Briesel inside. The Chiefs stunted toward their right. White makes the correct read and goes to the DT to his right. Briesel is at fault on the sack he goes after the same guy. He should have read the blitz and adjusted to pick up the blitzing LB. That left Slaton to pick up two guys. He sealed his guy inside Slaton had to pick up a blitzing LB or Safety. He picked up one but I think he wasn't able to get to his hot route. He got hung up in the block. I believe it was the safety who got free.

Wierd, the version of the game I watched this morning online was not in HD. (KC version)

I guess NFLN screwed up, but at least I got to watch the game :)

If this team remains healthy, we may set records. Thanks for going back to review th e play as I thought I saw Slaton engaged in a block but the safety was there so fast, I really couldn't tell what happened. The corrections could be made but I was happy to see Schaub take the sack and not lose the ball. I think turnovers will go down drastically.

Corners; you think Quinn and McCain played ok? As you probably know from my earlier posts, I am high on Glover being a starter fairly quickly. The dude has game. I liked McCain but due to size had him in nickle. Kubes switched them on me. Guess 4.33 makes up for 5'9".

I was going to comment on the sack of Schaub, but you beat me to it. That looked like a well executed blitz to me. We don't see a lot of 3-4 and it gives us problems. KC looks like it might have an OK D this season. Our D looks to be top 10ish, but we'll see.

I'm just now really watching the game. Offensively, the starters looked sharp. Except for the OL..... I haven't kept up with the injury report, but we need Pitts back, and if Myers isn't ready to go, I'd much rather see Caldwell at Center.

I know it's just one game, but Caldwell, and Washburn seemed like they "get it" On run plays, they went out, and made contact...... knock the first guy out of the way, and go get another one. Studdard, Butler, and White didn't seem to understand, as they tried to stay in contact with the first guy they touched. So much so that at times, they got completely turned around, where they were facing our QB. If they've got their body into a defensive player, and they continue to drive that player away from the LOS, that's fine. But on several plays, they just didn't "get it'

I will say Butler looked stronger than Washburn in pass pro, but I think Cliff moved his feet better, and overall did a better job. Butler looked fine for a right tackle.

I do also understand Butler saw more of the KC starting D....... but Washburn seemed to be farther along than Butler. White..... IMHO shouldn't make the team. Cardwell played better, seemed to "get it" He played Guard fine, not better than Briesel, I don't think, but I right now after one game, I'd rather see him in the game, than Studdard.

That's just me, that's just after one game.... but that's the way I see it.

Defensively, although I have supported TJ as best I could, I think DelJuan will take his spot. Del Juan & Frank Okam with Antonio Smith taking some snaps at that position, I can't see keeping Zgonina & TJ. Amobi looks strong, Cody is pretty fast for a fat sucker...... I think we're looking good there as well.

Mario, Barwin (who will probably be a star this year), Smith, Bullman...... I think we're good there.

Didn't really see anything out of the LBs or the DBs to talk about. Other than playing against Brodie Croyle & Dwayne Bowe is probably the toughest 2nd team they'll ever see.

Chris Brown looked great..... Steve Slaton looked great. When they were in the game, Butler, Studdard, & White were screwing up the run game. If not for the athletecism of Brown & Slaton, we wouldn't have got anyting on the ground.

Moats is quick, and he started to show it, when Washburn moved to the left side, and Cardwell took over at center. Without Myers & Pitts, I don't know if he'd have the chance to show us that speed in the regular season.

Andre Davis made a couple very nice grabs on balls that were thrown behind him.

Yeah I thought they looked okay. There were very few passes thrown at them. In fact, I believe only one was thrown at McCain and he and Ryans met at the ball and broke it up. Without much else to go on the main thing that I noticed is that they looked comfortable. They didn't look lost or spinning and they were on their respective guys. All the first team corners were right on top of their guys. I don't think you can take much from their performance other than that. I can't wait to see them this weekend.

Was that with the 1's? I didn't remember him getting any balls with the 1's. I know he was in there during the second series but I never saw him thrown to.

It was all McCain. D-Ryans came in afterwards.
