So I finally got to sit down and re-watch the first preseason game in HD which makes a big difference in being able to see the whole field.
I watched every snap with the first team and isolating each individual player, I re-watched every play 11 times. Here's my assessment through the first teams snaps:
Offense:
Schaub Looks comfortable, accurate and in sync. The one sack he took was a smart play. Slaton miss reads the block or doesn't get out for the dump off in time and tucking the ball was the correct play. I noticed a few plays where he could have gone down field and chose to go with the safer read but still for a good gain. Often times it was situational. For example, on 2nd and 21 after a penalty he chooses to hit his man 10 yrds over the middle in between a LB and a Safety instead of going for it all with 1 on 1 coverage down field. In that instance he's giving the team a manageable 3rd down and keeps the drive alive. "Could he be more aggressive in that situation? You bet he could." But he made a good read.
Slaton Due to less than good line play, his runs were mostly stuffed. When he had a chance, he got outside and made a play. His pass blocking still seems to be suspect at times.
C. Brown Good pass blocker, looked quick with good vision and most of all, power. Horse collar or not, he did cough it up once. So there's that.
D. Brown Contrary to what I heard on Lance Z's podcast, I thought his run blocking looked solid. Pass blocking looked good too. You can really see some improvement from last year already. His athleticism makes up for sloppy technique at times. Just wait until he gets more crisp technically and puts it all together. Nice reach at 26 thus far.
Studdard I'm seeing what Kubiak likes in Studdard finally. The nasty streak. What I'm not seeing in Studdard is his ability. He seems improved in pass blocking from last year but near useless as a run blocker. Dale Murphy put it best: "I don't like to see guys running around looking for someone to block." What he means is, better to not miss the first guy. Block him instead. He doesn't seem to get it. At least not yet. His aggressive nature kept the Texans from turning the ball over however. When Brown fumbled Studdard dove into that ball with no regard for anything else. That's what Kubiak is talking about. That's what Bush wants from his guys too. I still don't want to see this guy active on Sundays.
White Chris looked serviceable at least. Decent in pass pro. Decent in run blocking. Mentally he seems to read his blocks well and knows where he's supposed to be.
Briesel I don't know what it is about him, but it's really hard to find anything to criticize him about. He doesn't wow you ever, but I don't see him making mistakes really. His technique is sloppy but not enough to seem to be a factor. All I can figure is he is helped immensely by lining up next to Winston. His pass pro was suspect at times last year but against the Chiefs, he looked fine. ... Against the Chiefs. EDIT I double checked. as it turns out, Briesel miss read the blitz. He was at fault for the sack on Schaub in the first series.
Winston I know everybody is in love with Winston and you can really see why on run plays. WOW! He can seal off the entire backside all by himself and on plays when he has a TE over him... well just forget about it. I have issues with his inconsistency in pass protection but no one seems to think that is a concern. [He helped us loose the Indy game.[i/]) I digress. I am a fan and he looked good in pass pro against the Chiefs....
Daniels Good routes, above average blocking. We're good, good, good at this position. Dreesen was in to block and did a good job as well. Alex Gibbs is a Golden God.
WR's I'm lumping all the WR's together because it can all be summed up by how consistent they are as a unit. Johnson, Walter and Anderson get open and catch the ball. They all block well enough. The only extra note I'll add is Walter on an end around leaves something to be desired. He doesn't seem to have the burst to make that play work. (Davis was in with the first team as well but didn't make any catches that I saw.)
Overall The offense overall already looks well oiled in the passing game. The run blocking seems to be lacking some sync but with 2 starters out and it being the first preseason game that is acceptable. It was one of those situations where there was almost always 1 guy on the O Line making a mistake on each play allowing a defensive player to stuff the run. Usually missing a block or missing a read on who to block (Studdard). If all 5 guys aren't perfectly in sync in can really break down. I want to give praise to the system because you really have to appreciate how flawless it is when it's run properly. Gary Kubiak and Alex Gibbs, you are Golden Gods.
