I wrote nothing but good stuff about the character and integrity of the Texans’ coaching staff, front office, and ownership ever since the run into those last 6 games began and gave way to the seemingly great, yet slightly imperfect offseason.

While I did not realize it at the time, I also dismissed and possibly disrespected Dunta Robinson in his quest for the contract he wants and deserves, because I primarily thought the Texans’ organization would come through in the end. And, then came news that the Texans were not so upfront with other solid players such as Owen Daniels and DeMeco Ryans. That came to me like a hard slap in the face from an organization from top to bottom that has professed its determination to “take care” of its biggest team contributors.

I couldn't help it, I had to respond:

has it occurred to you that it's much more complicated with the looming uncertainty of the CBA? Or the fact that the players you are discussing are still under contract? Did you concider that under the current CBA they would not become free agents until their 6th seasons? Or that possibility that there is a greater priority to get the draft picks signed by camp start? Or that the #15 pick has the same agent as the 2 picks ahead of him and therefore might be a lesser priority not to mention he has to wait until they are signed to appropriately judge his value? Has it occurred to you that it's entirely possible that there is MUCH more involved than the front office's "willingness" to "do the right thing"?

luckily, in 7 hours we can talk about football instead.

However, it has begun with these key veterans, and as of today, has continued into the failure to sign key draft picks, Brian Cushing and Connor Barwin.

So apparently the Texans must now be a better organization than they were two days ago, as two of the five guys referenced have now been signed with a grand total of one day of TC missed.

My take on this is that it's really hard to have an intelligent/well informed take on this.

On one hand, you've got guys who have been integral to the two most successful seasons this team has had, are among the best in the league at their positions, and are good locker room guys, and good people.

On the other hand, those two seasons were both .500 seasons, even players among the best in the league at their positions can be overpaid, New England created a dynasty by not letting their hearts override their heads (see Asante Samuel and Deion Branch), two of these three guys are under contract, and the third can't be negotiated with any longer (other than the potential bargaining chip of agreeing not to franchise him in the future), and if the CBA isn't renegotiated by next year, all three can be controlled via either re-franchising them, or tendering them as RFA's.

Maybe the Texans are making a mistake by not wrapping this up, and potentially alienating these guys. If that turns out to be the case, Rick Smith and/or Gary Kubiak will be the one's to pay the biggest price, but in most cases, alienation seems to dry up and blow away if/when a new long-term contract is signed (and besides, if nothing else, it's kind of refreshing that if it is a mistake, it's kind of the opposite of the mistakes made with guys like Seth Payne and Gary Walker).

I have never known this organization not to reward veterans who preform. I thought the offer to Daunta was down right obscene myself. I have no problem with these guys getting what they can when they have the opportunity. But on the other hand....I don't want to ever be in cap hell again....ever.

I agreed. However, I must point out that this organization has not had many veterans who have fallen into the category of performing well enought to get rewarded.
