I am loving question #20- Its about time for San Antonio to get its own team.
7th largest city in the us not have a team. Sa has been protected from the bad economy because we are the fastest growing city in the nation. Stupid Cowboy fans here dont realize we can have our own team but time after time they say.."we dont want a team if it interferes with the Cowboys on TV' They have no pride and bow at the alter of Jerry. I freaking hate Cowboy fans and their team.

I think that they could support one possibly. They seem to be pretty passionate sports fans out there.
IMO, the Cowboys are America's team and that is fine by me. Basically all that means to me is they have more fans nationally (outside of their own market) than anyone else. I have lived in or near a few other NFL markets and the general rule is the majority are fans of the local team followed by Cowboys fans. Who really wants to be a fan of a team that everyone else roots for? Also because of that the Cowboys have no real identity as a Texas team.
For example, when I lived in New York, or the Philadelphia area and wore anything with the Oilers on it I would always get asked if I were from Texas. However if I were to wear Cowboys gear they would just think I am some schmuck who doesn't root for the home team.

That always happen(ed/s) to me whenever I'm in Seattle, even though that's one area that doesn't have many Cowboy fans. After the Seahawks, The AFC West teams are the next 4 out there.

I think San Antonio could support a team and has the faclities to do so. I disagree with the idea Orlando would be a good idea at all it'd be Jacksonville all over again.

It's the seven largest city, but only like the 28th largest metro area, which is why.
It's been discussed many times...no way the NFL would let a team play in the Alamo Dome as a permanent home.
They'd either have to revamp it to NFL standards or build new.

Questions? If San Antonio were to get their own team, would you still be a Texans fan first, but support the hometown team because of location? Would Texans drop to number 2? Would you attend games for both teams?
I don't have a problem with SA having its own team and could support/cheer for success until the play my #1 and #2 teams.
It seems to me "America's team" would be the team that had 51 or more per cent of fan support. Short of that, the team with the most support woud be America's most popular team, but that's not the same as "America's team".

Maybe. The Orlando area is almost twice the size of the Jacksonville area and is larger than the SA area. I think Orlando could support a team. I think SA would have the better fans though.
I don't even know if the NFL would want to play in the Alamodome temporarily. SA would have to have a new stadium complete. There are many upgrades the Alamodome would need.

I don't totally agree with that. I think the Steelers have more fans than the Cowpatties do. I have more family members that are Steelers fans Cowboys fans. They are EVERYWHERE! I still remember the last time when the Texans played the Steelers at home (yes, that hot ass game). The stadium was damn near split. I went to a pretty damn nice sports bar over by the Garland area when I was visiting my uncle once. The place was infested with Steelers fans. The thing I've always liked about Steelers fans are that they are true fans who love good football and love to have a good time. They aren't obnoxious like the numerous Cowboy fans I know. That's the main reason people hate the Girls so much. That, and their weiner of a owner Jerra.

Sorry mah man, you got the Spurs and thats all SA will get. You are stuck between two large metro areas that already have teams. Don't let the population numbers fool you because SA is lucky to have all the military there....which I would be willing to bet is the largest "Industry" in town. I know you may think well, we have more people than dallas but thats city limits not metro area. I know how you must feel but unfortunately you are in a tough spot...stuck between Cowboys, the largest city in the south and the Texas Longhorns. I thought SA leadership jumped the gun when they built the Alamodome with no promises from the NFL. If SA gets a team then we lose you as a fan and we don't want to lose you dude. lol As long as Los Angeles is without a team SA and Orlando and Toronto can all 4 git about it.

The stadium was damn near split....come on dude I think thats a bit much. I think the Steelers and Dallas run close on the most popular team but I have to give the Cowboys the edge worldwide. I think I know why the cowboys are more popular...the cheerleaders give them that edge..lol

I would have to stop rooting for the Texans because my first allegiance is to my hometown. I wont root against them. I have a feeling that If Jerrah lets us have a team it will be an AFC team and in the same division as the Texans. I wouldnt however act like the franchise that we get (if it is moved) has 30=years of tradition like the Titan fans do and If the prior location gets a new team I will not got to that team's site and thump it over the head of the city that lost its team....(Titan fans) For that reason I would prefer an expansion team to having one relocated because I would hate to do that to another fanbase.( I will oppose our city council if they decide to bribe an owner LIKE NASHVILLE DID)
I know the moment SA gets a team that season the Texans will win the Superbowl...bank on it.
I really would hate to leave but an NFL team would be great for SA and I must support what is good for my city and if that means rooting against,( only if they are in the same division) the Texans...I would have to.
Thanks, but your right. Our city leaders are not forward thinking enough to realize that a stadium between Austin and San Antonio would help creat a metroplex type of situation. Shoot can you tell the difference between Austin and SA now?
Also we have alot of ***** Cowboy fans here...you know the really stupid kind. I think they all live here. One guy yelled at a talk show host for calling them the Dallas Cowboys...he said "theyre THA Cowboys not the Dallas Cowboys." True story and I heard it more than once.
So till Jerry dies or hell freezes over....go Texans and may Bud and Jerry kiss my Battle Red Boxers.

I've seen you talk about this before but I hate to tell you, your anger towards not having a team is very misplaced. In fact the rumor is that Jerry and McNair wouldn't want another team but it is far from the truth.
You don't have a team because of the old commissioner Tagliabue and his basic icy relations with the city. It is also because of the AlamoDome. I hate to tell you but no matter who has influence in the NFL, a guy like Goddell will put a team where he sees fit and no owner will block that. In fact there has been various articles regarding this. So stop blaming Jerry..he actually brought the city money with the camp. Here is one piece I found from October of last year

It's really not. Not only did we have several Steelers fans at our tailgate, the stadium was chop-full of them that day. I was there. You'd have thought the Texans were playing at a neutral site that day. And I still say that the Steelers have just as many or more fans than Dallas. The reason you may think Dallas has more fans is because Cowboys fans are the ultimate bandwaggoners. When they're winning, people seem to come out of the woodwork proclaiming their love for them. When they're not, it's the ultimate extreme.
True story: I've got a friend who moved to Houston from Atlanta. He stayed with me for a while until he got a job and got on his feet. It was during football season at the time. This is when the Cowboys had Quincy Carter as their starting QB. He told me he was a Cowboys fan, but during the games he would be talking on the fun or he'd leave the apartment in the middle of the 2nd quarter to go to the store or get something to eat or whatever. Never once saw him wear any Cowboys gear during the game whatsoever. Fast forward to two years ago when they starting winning again and everybody jumped back on the wagon. Now, he's not answering calls during the game. He's rushing home from church to put on his Cowboys gear before the game comes on. He's got Cowboys stickers on his truck, etc, etc. Got another friend I grew up with my whole life. Didn't find out how much he absolutely love the Cowboys until a year ago. Now, there are some real true blue Cowboys fans out there. My Uncle David is as true a fan as there can be. But there are way too many bandwagon jumpers to make me believe that they have more true fans than the Steelers.

I think the bandwagon comment gets exaggerated. I've been a Cowboy fan since the 70s and even when they were big then and through the 80s, etc other stadiums were full of Cowboy fans. They have an NFL record of consecutive games in front of sold-out stadiums. 160 sold-out regular and post-season games began in 1990, and included 79 straight sellouts at Texas Stadium, and 81 straight sell-outs on the road. The Cardinals stadium used to have more Cowboy fans than anything. It is just a product of decades of success starting around the 60s and 70s and up. Until 1986 they had 20 starught winning seasons and 18 of those were playoff years. Back when I was a kid the Steelers were the evil team...for the Cowboys, Oilers and everyone else. Overall Pitt is represented really well but I still think Dallas over the long haul has more fans. Pitt and they are definitely up there together though.

I don't think it is. Like I said, there are many true blue Cowboys fans out there, but there are alot of bangwagon Cowboys fans too. And I know why they sell out on the road - Everybody loves it when the circus comes to town! And during that same 60s and 70s era that you're referring to, that's when the Steelers captured a lot of fans also (most notably, my Mama). The story is that Rooney didn't want the "America's Team" moniker, so it went to the Cowboys instead.

Completely untrue. It was purely a NFL Films thing. They were making a video for the 1979 season and they wanted to give it a moniker. The decided America's team because of all of their fans. Landry didn't want it and Tex Schram, being the business and marketing guy he was, ran with it. That is what annoys me..people think Dallas gave themselves the name but NFL Films did it all along. I always mention that here. Rooney did say he would rather have Pittsburghs Team after the fact. Also, the "circus" comment makes no sense since there were some years duing the sellout streak where there was no drama and sometimes no winning.
Again, 20 straight winning seasons to 1986 helps alot. And for the record I think alot of teams have bandwagon fans. Just because your not a fan of Dallas doesn't make them have more bandwagon fans. You just admitted that Pitt gained alot of theirs during those winning years...it's the same thing. Same with the old Raider teams and the recent Patriot teams. Yes, I can still tell the difference, but that once empty land is being paved over every year by Walmarts now.
To create a metroplex type situation, Austin and SA should have combined and had built an airport, too. Having the stadium in the middle, who would get naming rights? Would it be San Antonio?

I think an NFL team would succeed in San Antonio. That being said, I think an NFL team would succeed in a ton of markets that wouldn't be able to support most other sports. The fact that there are only 8 games and fan bases draw from a much larger geographic area allow for successful teams in smaller markets.
The revenue distribution system is why in the dead of winter Green Bay can sell out a stadium bigger than the city they are in. It was the smartest thing the NFL ever did. Also the fact that the league negotiates TV rights brought the Packers enough national exposure to where they definitely belong in the discussion of biggest fan base despite their humble origin.

Green Bay is definitely larger than the amount of people the stadium holds, but very good point. Jacksonville is a city that throws it all away though. That team needs to move.

Mcnair ...no Shoot, Mcnair doesnt even market the Texans here and I really dont think he cares about the Sa market one way or the other.Bud Adams and Jerry ...Yes. They (mainly Jerry) torpedoed Red McCombs efforts to bring a team here. Once when they were expanding and the Alamodome was new San Antonio lost its bid to Jacksonville and Carolina (thanks to Bud and Jerry's votes) The second time , Jerry blocked Red from moving the Vikings to San Antonio by not allowing Red to bring it to the relocation commitee. (Red said so in a recent TV interview). Three years ago there was another chance, Red also said that a team (rumored to be the Chargers) wanted to relocate here and asked for help from our Mayor Ed Garza, but was rebuffed by the Mayor because he felt we had football in the form of Dallas Cowboys training camp.
Also dont forget that we sold out all of the Saints home games here( and thats when they were really bad) As soon as Jerry saw that he moved training camp faster than Michael Irwin could say "Thats not my crackpipe". He was one of the owners who forced Benson (at the time) to sign a no move agreement with New Orleans.
There is a track record with Jerry and Bud (when he was here) blocking a move which then was understandable...crappy but its business why would they want someone taking their business. However, the lenghts Jerry is going to now is freaking rediculous. I even had an Academy manager tell me the Texans signed an agreement with Jerry not to sell merchandise outside of Houston for the first 5 years of the team's existance. Once McNair agreed to that Jerry would agree to let there be an expansion team in Houston. This little nugget was confirmed other retailers within the area. (my wife found that out because she was trying to find me a jersey two or three years ago and several managers told her this)
The most obvious and most recent example is with the radio station. Ticket 760 used to be the home of the Texans in San Antonio., until Jerry offered the Blue Star Network to the Ticket with the condition they drop the Texans radio coverage here in San Antonio. Now ther is no Texans coverage in San Antonio. Coincidence...I think not.
Jerry uses our city and if you think money is coming here you are wrong.
1. The Alamodome is not charging him rent.
2. He is receiving 100% of the mercahndise and concessions here.
Any money that is coming here because of training camp pales in comparison to what we could have if we had our own team.
Follow the money and it all leads to one man Jerry Jones. I dont hate him for being successful and a smart business man. I hate him and his team because of how he uses my city.Problem here is that there are ***** Cowboy fans in the media and the city that worship at the alter of Jerrah and 'America's Team"( Note: if you criticize Jerry you could loose your passes to said training camp why would the express writers do anything to loose ther credentials)
