Texans FA signing: FB Boomer Grigsby

Remember him from Hard Knocks, when he was with the Chiefs?

He's another one of those high-motor, high-effort, not so high-talent players. I guess that cements that Cecil Sapp won't be back, unless the Texans have designs on moving Boomer back to his original position, linebacker - which of course is very doubtful.

I don't think he's just a camp body, though. Kubes said that Vonta Leach had a lot more energy and played better once they brought in a second FB last year, so if he does well on special teams, Grigsby can stick.

Still a curious signing. He was released by the Dolphins after the 1st game in 2008...........and sat out the entire remainder of the season. During his entire career he has had no carries and only 2 receptions. Unless they think that he has the ability to add those skills to his repertoire, I don't see him functioning effectively as a FB in our system. Try to convert him to that hard yard back we need? Only if they think he can use his LB moves with ball in hand. Significant ST contribution will undoubtedly be a necessity.
 
All he would do would be the backup FB and a special teamer. They didn't re-sign Sapp, so I don't think it's a curious signing at all. He's a good special teamer, so he's got a good shot to make the team unless he's lost that ST skill.

I remember him from prior to the 2005 draft, where Grigsby had a cult following on Texans fan forums. I'm convinced that none of his "fans" had actually seen Boomer play while in college. They just loved the name and that he was a wrestler.

I think Boomer is fodder. This season's Jon Abbate.

If he's fodder, does that mean our #2 FB isn't currently on the roster? I don't think Casey is going to be our backup FB. The Texans carried 2 FBs last year, and Boomer is a good special teamer. He can stick.

Sapp, while at Denver, was utilized as a running back, full back and special teamer. Sapp was initially brought here to be utilized as an RB.

Well, but what was he ACTUALLY used as? He ran the ball exactly two times last year, and Kubiak said part of the reason he came in was to give him reps in practice as a FB so that Leach wouldn't wear down.

You're right, that's how it did turn out. And if that's the case, Sapp was certainly considered a strong STer. If Boomer is to be anything but fodder, he will need to be at least as valuable as Sapp at STs as well as some other position if not FB.

The Texans will look to add Grigsby to a special teams unit that allowed 22.3 yards per return on kickoffs, which ranked 11th in the league.

“Grigsby brings us a toughness that I like,” special teams coordinator Joe Marciano said. “He's a veteran special teams guy, he’s had his bell rung a few times and he knows how to hit a guy. I’m excited about working with him and getting him into our system.”

Grigsby can serve both S/T and backup FB duty. So he's got a primary and a secondary function. zat's okay... isn't it?

The game where LJ basically had his way with us during the terrible 2005 season. He states his awe of Reliant but then brings up how bad our home crowd was at that game etc. etc. Can't say I blame him, hopefully if he sticks on the team this year we can give him some different impressions on our fan base.
 
Playing in front of a small and quiet crowd only further amplifies how great our home crowd is. The cheese and wine crowd in Houston makes the intimidation factor of Kansas City’s barbeque and beer fans just ridiculous.

He's right. When I go to the games and look around at the crowd, it's not what I expect to see at a football game, especially so in the high dollar seats and the suites and stuff. They couldn't care two wits who wins. It's about being seen and socializing and all that jazz. KC has better fans AT THE GAME. Now, a lot of us true fans don't have the dough to be shelling out big bucks to watch a bunch of rich people running around on a field making the even richer owner even more money. The times I go, it's a charity case.

QFT!! I went to the Ravens game this past season. My brother was able to get Club Seats through his wife's work. When I went in there all painted up people were actually saying "I hope I'm not sitting where he is, he is going to be loud." Seriously? Also I go to the seats and people are just giving me ugly looks cuz I'm screamin things like "D-Fense" or "HOUSTON - TEXANS".

Go up to the nose bleeds and I am part of the family.
 
So that's true? That's not something that's changed since way back when he gave that quote?

Sigh. That sucks. My parents and I had Oiler season tix during the Run'n Shoot era, and it was always loud and crazy. That just makes me sad.

Yeah, I get shooshed alot in my G/F's dads Club Seats. Its really annoying. We have some crazy nutts, but alot of boring worthless fans. I know what group all of us are, but the rest are pretty bad, or fans of other teams.

That was one of the worst games ever. No fan base could have brought any sort of significant intensity for that game.

As I recall, HWWNBN threw a pick six with about 25 seconds left in the first half.

The tailgate was fun. Then the rest of the evening was garbage. I stayed until the end. There was nobody sitting around me for about 15 seats, including my friend who came with me.

Uh...have you been to a game lately? (Not rhetorical/sarcasm)

I frequently get told to sit down and shut up. Frequently because I don't. As far as fan interaction with the game at Reliant I think they would rather pin you back in the seat by blaring stupid STUPID STUPID STUPID songs and kiss cam BS at you than you getting up and cheering for the team yourself. Only when the team is scoring a touchdown or on a 3rd down late in the 4th quarter do most feel the need to get into the game.

I live in Austin now... I've only been to one Texans' game - last season's near-collapse against Detroit aka Dunta's first game back. I was down pretty close, right around the tunnel where the Texans come out for intros. It wasn't crazy, but it wasn't like a country club, either. I kept looking over at the bullpen and wishing I was over there, because that's the kind of fan I am.
 
He always seemed like a character on the Hard Knocks problem and a real hard worker to boot, always helps to have these types of individuals on a team.
 
I am digging the attitude that this team is starting to put together.

You got DanO talking about beating out Schaub, you got Bulman giving everything he's got and earning his roster spot, Robinson refusing to give up his number b/c he wants to remember where he came from, Anderson being cocky and brash, and now Boomer.

And I know that they are just backups, but if the backups act like this than the starters are constantly put on notice and on guard that there job is not safe. The guy behind them could take there spot at any time.
 
He seems sincere, but I think he's on a very weak bubble to earn a roster spot.

I wish him luck during camp. If he stays out of the training room and busts arse evry day his bubble might get stronger.
 
If Boomer shows signs of being a good player on ST then I'd give him a roster spot. It would be icing on the cake if he were to become the second FB for the Texans. Joe has been here from day number one so he must be doing his job right that is only true for one other coach. The Texans were ranked 11th in the NFL last season on ST. I'd love to see them inch their way into the top ten on ST because the more that area improves the more often the D will have that much of a shorter field to try to stop the other team. Joe is rated among the top ST coaches in the league. He's going to have lots to choose from in training camp and we shall see how it plays out starting tomorrow.
 
I loved watching him run down the side line that time when a TD was scored. That kind of coach motivation is good to watch.

I've not had the chance to see much of him as a football player, but from those videos I really like him as a person. Sounds like someone who appreciates what he's got and has his priorities in order.


...Apart from maybe the "I define my life by country music concerts" bit. Now I like a wide variety of music, but I just don't get the appeal of country music. What's the point?
