Arian Foster - RB - Tennesse Volunteers

76Texan

Hall of Fame
I'm going to take a different approach on Foster.

Said he would question anything, but the play-calling.

Quote:
"We are the rooks, the pawns, and the knights in this game.
We are not the King nor the Queen."

6'1, 216-226 lbs

Underwent arthroscopic knee surgery following the 2007 season...
Missed some action with a thigh bruise in 2008...

Had been timed anywhere between 4:55 and 4:73 in the 40
23 reps

Can go over the top for a TD or weaving his way thru inside traffic.
A big guy like that shouldn't be able to make those razor-sharp cuts, but he did.
I would say the injuries might have a little to do with his performance in 08,
along with that inconsistent line, and how the coaches used him.
If he can revert to form, it might very well be another steal for the Texans.

Games reviewed.

2006 Penn St. Outback Bowl
12-65 yd 1 recpt - 13 yd

Gained tough yards inside against the duo LBs Dan Connor and Posluszny.
Showed good vision and a quick shift on the cut back run.

2007 Cal #9 Tenn #23 to open the season. vs. Marshawn Lynch/Justin Forsett.
17-79 yd 1 recpt-4 yd

Lowered his shoulder and bulled up the middle several times.
Showed good vision as he set up blockers.
The Vols led 35-0 late in the third.
Looked smooth out of the backfield, good hands on a high throw.

2007 LSU
10-44 yd

Nothing spectacular.
The Tigers were able to penetrate often (Dorsey, Jackson, Favorite).
LSU #1 Defense
When there's a hole, Arian would get some yards; otherwise, just some tough yds.

Announcer: "Doesn't have breakaway speed, but he's a smart runner."

Threw some good blocks.
Almost pulled in a tough catch on a fade route in the endzone corner.
Was open on a few checkdown passes but QB didn't take advantage.

2008 Florida
14-37 yd 1-15 yd

Some tough runs mostly inside against a very fast Gators defense that would stop any runner on this day.
When the defense set camp in your backfield, it's a rough day.
A nice shoestring catch out of the backfield and a couple of good moves to get 15 yds.

@Auburn
8-30 yd

Worked hard and kept his feet moving even with tacklers all over him.
Broke some tackles. The Vols' line was inconsistent all year long.

Georgia
3-3 yd 3-8 yd

The Bulldogs controlled the ball for 42 mins.
They loaded the box and dared the Vols to pass. Just as the aforementioned teams.
The O-line was inconsitent all year. Did I just repeat myself there?

Alabama
6-21 yd 3-32 yd

Bama controlled the ball for 35:32 mins

Showed good hands out of the backfield. Can make the touch (and tough) catches.

A nice little shake-and-bake move once, when he got past the LOS, momentarily froze the OLB.
That gave him enough separation to turn to the outside and make a nice catch on the screen pass for 12 yd,
carrying the LB the last ten yards or so.

Caught a flare pass into the flat about 3 yd behind the LOS,
and just drilled the CB who came up to try make the play, and plowed forward 4 yd out of bound.

Came off the LOS around the LT,
put a double move on the LB, started inside, then spinned back to the outside, putting the LB on one knee.
Pulled the ball in from under his waist for a nice little one-handed grab.
The OLB recovered very nicely, limited it to 12 yd gain.
A better throw might have made a difference.
Foster would have had a chance to beat out the safety down the sideline for a possible TD.

Just as many other teams, Bama loaded the box often.
Foster always worked hard to gain yd in the middle, but he can't do it alone all the time.
If the D-linemen keep getting penetration, or the LBs get free, there's only so much a RB can do.

One time, he found a little hole off-guard, got up to daylight.
The DT caught him about 3-4 yds beyond the LOS,
but Foster kept moving his feet, working for an extra 4-5 yards, even as the LB came to help.

Another time, on 3rd and short, he met the DT Darius? #57 a couple of yds behind the LOS,
lowered his shoulder squarely into the lineman's chest,
drove into him so hard you can hear the pad go smack loudly.
The impact jolted both of them momentarily, but Foster kept his legs churning,
and pushed forward almost three yards, with Darius riding him, and another 3 defenders piling in.

Announcer: "Marcell Darius drilled him but couln't hold him.
And thats a clutch run by Arian Foster.
He got nailed by 290 some pounder and just bowled (balled???) him off.
They got an awful lot penetration up front."

Vanderbilt
11-53 yd

Inside zone run left. Started left, nothing there.
Foster made a quick cut back to the right (pretty much up the middle) for 13 yds.

A draw run up the middle. Nothing there,
Foster made a quick cut to outside RT, saw that the CB was there to turn the play in.
Double move, faked to the outside, then turned inside, leaving the CB D.J.Moore in the dust.
22 yd gain.

Eight men in the box.
Inside zone run right. Started right, nothing there.
Cut back straight up the middle. Avoided the LB's grasp. Gained 5 yd.
Drove the safety and the helping CB backward, for an extra 4 yd.

Ten men in the box.
3 yd loss.

Ten men in the box.
3yd gain up the middle.

The last two series of the game, the Vols practically rode Foster to kill the clock.
And they succeeded.

2008 recap.
It's hard to do much when you only averaged 11 carries a game (4.35 ypc) plus 19 total catches for the year (8.74 ypc.), a lone rushing TD.
The other 2 RBs combined for 12.4 carries (4.42 ypc), total of 7 catches (4.86 ypc.)

Career.
Foster had 12 rushing TDs in 07, plus 10 more the previous 2 years.
He had 2 receiving TDs in each of the previous 3 years.

FUMBLES

2005
SC Gamecocks

6 mins to go in the second quarter.
Vols got the ball at their 38 and moved downfield.
On 3-1 at SC 9yd line, Foster ran for 8 yd and lost the ball in the endzone, recovered by SC.
(I did not watch this game.)
SC failed to score after the fumble.

Vols lost 15-16
Big deal, the Vols led 12-7 at the half.

2006 Outback bowl vs Penn St

3rd play of the second quarter.
Foster got the hand off, went right. Toss the ball to the receiver on a reverse.
Foster was carrying the ball tight as if he was running with it.
When he started open his arm to flip the ball, he kinda of juggling with it some.
That messed up the timing between them two a little bit.
Still, the receiver could have had that ball.
Maybe the two of them were a bit closer to each other than they should have been.
Penn St recovered at the 24 and got a FG out of it.

With 10:59 to play, game tied at 10.
Vols got the ball at their 33.
After an incomplete pass, Ainge connected with a receiver for a 53 yd gain to the Nittany Lions 14.

Next play, Arian got the carry.
On the fumble, he had lowered his pads, with both arms around the ball.
Somehow, the two LBs just had their hands in the right place in a jarring match.
Connor slapped the ball loose just before Foster's knees hit the ground.
Penn St recovered and returned it for a TD to lead 17-10

The Vols got the ball twice more, but couldn't score.
Penn. St. kicked another FG to win it 20-10

In 07 vs. Florida.

Trailing 20-28, the QB did not hand off the ball properly at the Vols 13.
Gators recovered and scored to make it 35-20 and never looked back.

Replays and the announcer concur that it was the QB's fault,
as Foster had his arms in the correct position to receive the hand-off
(as well as the timing and where he was supposed to be.)

08 season opener at UCLA

With 13:52 in the third, Vols had the ball at their 21.
1 and goal at UCLA 6, Foster rushed for no gain.
Fumbled, recovered by UCLA's Rahim Moore.
This one is definitely on Foster.
He was trying to make the cut, and did not tuck the ball away in time.
A bunch of defenders surrounded him, and the LB just swiped the ball away.
The Bruins got the ball at their 6 and ended up punting.
The Vols still led 14-7 at the time.
They ended up losing 24-27, however.

In all, Foster fumbled once every 95 touches,
even counting the times he hold the ball correctly and still was charged for fumbling.

From his mom regarding ("Had Foster fumbled?"):

"He has.
His freshman year (o5), his fumble against South Carolina as he was trying to score. That was him.
The fumble against Penn State (06) was him. He had two hands on it, but he's got to keep it.
The fumble against SC last season (07) that our guy recovered, was Arian.
The fumble against UCLA (08) at the beginning of this season was definitely him.

So Yes, would be my answer.
I've never denied that, but I don't care what anyone says,
the Florida fumble where Erik handed off with the wrong hand, not him.
The fumble this season against Auburn, not him."

.......

From a poster on VolNation
(and I saw that game, too!)

Against Auburn is was Crompton, the QB.
He didn't keep the ball tight before it got to Arian
and it hit the fullback as he passed by.
It never even made it to Arian.
Don't see how you can blame someone if they never even touch the ball.

I'd also like to forewarn y'all that Mrs. Foster is a very fierce defender of her son (not that he needs it), more than Mr. Myers for his son.

But she seems to be very fair, even after all those posts I read accross several message boards.

BTW, welcome to Houston, Arian and Mrs. Foster.
I hope Arian will work hard to carve out a career for himself.

May the best man win the job!

Am I the only one who thinks it's funny that we've got a guy named Arian playing on the same team with a member of the White Nation?

we gotta have links with copy and paste stuff guys...just a reminder.

That said, I'm bully on Foster...he's a hell of a talent and has some toughness inside. If he can stay healthy I really like him on this roster.

What does that mean? :foottap:

After watching highlights..i just dont like this guys cuts/vision. Does have breakaway speed and the size is def a plus. But whats breakaway speed if you cant get past the second level.

Still feel JJ will beat him out.

So it's not possibel to have a Slaton/Moats/JJ/Foster backfield?

There is an issue of scarcity with roster spots. I think Foster is competing with Chris Brown for a roster spot while Jeremiah Johnson is competing with Ryan Moats.

If the vet wins out the rook will prolly go on the practice squad.

Maybe but since RB was not a focus and SLaton's carries have to be reduced, I can see 4 backs on roster

Can you clarify that part, thanks!

I dont see why we'd carry 4 on the active roster. We'd only suit up 3, why not keep 3 and have 1 on the PS? Use that extra roster spot on something else.

ok, thanks :tiphat:

No problem! Maybe next year I will learn enough to make short youtube clips.
I wonder how that goes as far as copyright with the TV stations and the NCAA, do you or anybody knows?

Looks like everybody is doing it, so I reckon it's not a big deal???

I like Foster to make the team. Shanahan mentioned during the All Access interview that the Texans would likely keep 4 HBs, and that would help Foster's chances.

Foster got a 2nd round evaluation from the NFL in 2008, when he was considering coming out as a junior. Injuries and the mess that Tennessee became last season dropped Foster's stock. I don't know if Foster runs with the low center of gravity that Lo White did. But, he's got great hands and could become a solid short yardage runner ala another former Vol RB, James Stewart. Stewart had some solid seasons sharing the load with Fred Taylor in JAX.

If Foster can return to the back he was during his Junior season, then the Texans definitely have steal. He's tough and shifty and runs with great power when he's at his best. He really struggled last year, but I think it had more to do with the entire team being subpar. I thought he would enter the draft after his Jr. year, because he had the possibility of being a late 1st-rounder. He was that good. If he's back at 100%, the Texans have themselves an impressive player and a solid backfield for years to come.

Your all just praising him to grease up to his Mum.....

:hides:

LOL, exactly what I was thinking.
I do like his chances here, though.
By signing here, he's put himself in a decent position to compete in a fair battle to win a spot. Many other UDFAs are nothing more than camp bodies, but that's not the case in this situation.

Chris Brown has to make it out of training camp. I think Moats has a pretty decent chance to keep going but wouldn't be totally surprised at any combo with 2 of Moats/Foster/Johnson behind Slaton. I think only 3 RBs will be carried and no way does Brown stay healthy.

If Arian Foster ran behind possibly the best Oline in the country and against Pac 10 defenses like Johnson did, many would feel Foster is better. (he probably would've been drafted) Foster had to make his living behind a crappy Oline and against SEC defenses.

I like Foster, because he offers something this offense doesn't have, a big bruising back. I hope he makes the team, if he does we'll greatly improve in the red zone.

During All-Access, Shanahan mentioned that the Texans mentioned that the Texans would likely carry 4 RBs and 1 FB. And that Casey would need to be the emergency FB, if he were to dress on gamedays. I think it's a good idea to carry 4 RBs (and dress 3). But, someone will have to help out on special teams. That might give Moats an edge.

I think I would take Casey over Moats if it's coming down to special teams.

FTJ that link is awesome, I'd rep you again if I could! That's a serious stiff arm from a 205ish lbs guy. One on Brandon Harrison, I wonder if it's the same guy on the Texans? I think Moats is really going to need to reprove himself to get back on ahead of Foster and Johnson but I totally think he's capable.

Thanks. I know everyone looks like a superstar on their highlights vids, but I just like that old smash mouth football. So stiff arm vids get me pumped.

Foster needs to be explosive off Center & hit the cut-back lanes, show he can block a LB or Safety, then display some soft hands in short routes. very solid undrafted free agent signing.

Same is true for Johnson, he is more explosive & very dangerous in the flats or off the edge. the two together make a nice complimentry package @ RB to develop down the road.

I watched him play several times last year and if that is who he is then at best we have a slower Ron Dayne. I didnt watch him his JR year.
