Commentary: McNair builds experience, better team

After consecutive 8-8 seasons, the Texans are close to becoming winners and their owner Bob McNair says he can feel it.

That is one reason McNair is very excited about today, decision day in the NFL.

McNair has always expected draft day to go well, but he is far more confident now than he was when he saw his first war-room action in 2002.

Of course, the Texans’ owner enters his eighth draft knowing a lot more about the NFL than he did then.

“There’s a learning curve in anything that you do, especially when you go into something new,” McNair said. “If you want to learn and want to become better at what you do, you’re going to work hard at it, and with that added knowledge you’re going to improve.

“I hope that’s the case. I’m certainly much more knowledgeable than I was.”

As owner of a high-revenue franchise, McNair is already one of the big boys in the league. He’d like to see his football team become one of the big boys on the field.

It is getting close. McNair expects the Texans to move closer today by making the right choice with the 15th pick of the first round.

Decisions questioned

McNair sounds like he's finally gotten some toughness to him.

I like the quote that says, "They know I hire 'em and fire 'em." He without a doubt seems must more confident in his own ability today, than he has in the past.

I like him. I've always liked him. He definitely has a better grasp on personell and hiring the guys that fit his philosophy. I think Rick Smith and Gary Kubiak are those kind of guys. They are patient and prepared and I think McNair fits into that mold as well. In 3 short years this organization has become one of the most respected in the league from an operational standpoint.

I have a friend who is a Redskins fan and I look at him sometimes and he just shrugs his shoulders. We should feel lucky to have what we have. We've been waiting along time for winning football in Houston but I feel confident that we're doing it the right way. Just like on the field we're building from the inside out with smart team first guys.

Go Texans.

I am tired of talk.

Show me on the football field.

McNair (Kubiak) was way too slow to pull the trigger on Dickie Smith.

Yep

Uncle BoB you have been shown the money. Now it's time to show the fans some love by spending some of that money.

Atleast you seemed to have learned how to hire football people. Unlike the 5 years of crap that you gave us by hiring the CC regime.

We are 2 great drafts away from being an above average playoff team. Today is a huge day for Smithiak.

One thing is for sure regardless of how next season turns out Uncle BoB will get his money.

There will be no changes until Uncle BoB is not making money.

Way to talk tough though Uncle BoB.

Another spurious comment from the legion of the truly uninformed. To say that McNair hasn't spent money is just a flat out lie. He spent one of the highest amounts in the history of the NFL to bring the team here and they have consistently spent pretty much all of the cap money allowed. In fact, they spent so much on players that we were in cap trouble with some of the bad contracts. So for you to say he isn't spending the money on the team so that he can line his own pockets with more money is just a flat out lie. What you are probably sniveling about is that the team hasn't brought in a high profile free agent like the Redskines do every year. That has worked out well for them. You build a team via the draft and that is what this team is doing and spending every dollar available to get it done.

We are 10.7 mill under the cap before the draft.

After we sign the draft choices I dont know how much $ will be left but there should be enough to sign a quality FA RB. (Fred Jackson comes to mind).

Fred Jackson is an upgrade over what we have? In what way?

Did you see fred Jackson play last year?

He was the perfect cmpliment to Lynch and would be the perfect compliment to Slaton.

He is fast, has good hands, and is a good short yardage/goal line RB.

I know who Jackson is and I've seen him play plenty.

He looks like the exact same player that Chris Brown is. I don't see him as an upgrade, that's all.

Jackson has never been injured.

I respect your opinion but name a RB that's better than Jackson in FA.
