My last pre-draft Texans mock...

These are the players that I would take if I were the GM, not necessarily the players that I think the Texans will pick. God only knows what players Smith and Kubiak will choose, it's a scary thought. I did this with no trade down scenarios since they are so unpredictable.

1. Darius Butler-CB, 5'11" and 183 lbs. runs 4.41, Dunta is still a major question mark, will he stay healthy, will he be any good next season, will he be better than he was last season, will he pull his head out of his butt and come back to reality regarding the contract offered (it was more than generous), and if he is any good does he even want to sign with the Texans longterm? Butler may be a little reach but I believe that you select players best for your team and don't go by the draft positional opinion of the so call experts. If they were any good they'd be working for an NFL team and not writing about the draft. The 2 best man coverage corners are Alphonso Smith, and Darius Butler and Butler is alot faster and a couple inches taller. I think he'll be a good CB, and will offer insurance and leverage in the Dunta negotiations. I know he's not the most popular pick but he makes the most sense. Besides we've addressed the D-line and LB's in FA and haven't touched the secondary, it only makes sense that we'll address it early in the draft. Second choice pick is Brian Cushing-LB, but he's got question marks around him and I'm not sold on any of the USC LB's.

2. William Moore-SS/FS, 6'00" and 221 lbs. runs 4.49, I think Patrick Chung will be gone and Kubiak likes players that can play more than one position and Moore can handle both Safety positions and also adds some size and toughness to our secondary as well as some possible play making ability. Second choice is Andy Levitre-OG, best OG available for our system.

3. Antoine Caldwell-C, 6'03" and 309 lbs. runs 5.23, We've addressed D-line and LB's in FA and have now addressed the secondary, it's time to make the O-line better. I was originally going to pick Trevor Canfield here but Caldwell offers the versatility of playing both C and G and he's got the size and athleticism to play the ZBS and we need help on this O-line. He could replace Brisiel and backup Myers. Second choice is Chip Vaughn-SS, very good speed and size but may not be available in the 3rd round.

4a. James Davis-RB, 5'11" and 211 lbs. runs 4.43, good size and speed, runs with some power and fits our ZBS perfectly. I'd actually prefer Andre Brown but he'll be gone by now. Second choice is Antone Smith-RB, not the size we've been talking about but great speed and a down hill running style and very quick, he'd be great in the ZBS as well.

4b. David Bruton-FS, 6'02" and 219 lbs. runs 4.46, this guy has great speed, size and hitting ability he will be a special teams star until he's ready to start in 2010. Second choice Mark Parson-CB, good man coverage CB and great value in the 4th.

5. Deandre Levy-LB, 6'02" and 236 lbs. runs 4.56, good size and speed and will add depth to the LB's. This might be a little early for him but I think he'll develope and be a good value and depth pick and good on special teams. Second choice Greg Isdaner-OG, good depth and already plays the ZBS.

6. Henry Melton-DE, he's 6'04" and 269 lbs. runs 4.65 pretty good for someone his size and will be good rotational DE speed rusher on passing 3rd downs when we move Antonio Smith inside. Second choice, I thought of Roy Miller-DT but he seems to be moving up lately and probably won't be available in the 6th so it's Lydon Murtha-OT great speed for an OT and will add youth and depth on the O-line.

7. Dan Gronkowski-TE, 6'06" and 255 lbs. runs 4.78 good blocking TE that should come in handy on short yardage and goal like situations. Second choice Aaron Perez-P, good punter and as big as a LB, and will be alot cheaper than Turk.

OK, let me hear your opinions....

Looks pretty solid to me. I like seeing Butler over Matthews. You do have us getting alot of DB's. With a draft like this, look for 23 to be dealt.

I'm not a college ball expert by any stretch. But I like that you're bolstering the secondary instead of buying into these hyped up OLBs. I'm just not convinced that Matthews or Cushing are a first round pick better than a healthy Diles/June/Adibi mix. If we were still replacing Greenwood, I'd feel differently. Personally, I'd be amazed if we landed both of your first two picks.

For years, people have been eyeballing safeties for this team. Kubiak & Smith have added/subtracted quite a few. Personally, I've been happy with what we've had at either safety position, because I just don't see anything worth getting.

Laron Landry was the only safety we've "could've" got, that I thought would be worth it.

I want a hitter, someone who can instinctively play the Quarterback, and someone with the speed to cause QBs to worry, even if he's 10 yards off the LOS.

In short, I don't think our safeties today, are any better than the CC Brown/Glenn Earl Tandem we had 4 years ago. & I don't see William Moore improving this team enough to warrant a 2nd Round pick.

IMHO, if we get a CB in the first, we need the best LB/DT on the board. If we get a LB in the first, then we need the best CB/DT on the board.

I honestly don't want Cushing or Matthews on our team and this teams weakest spot last year was the secondary. Darius Butler offers a very good #2 CB or possibly a #1 as well as insurance and leverage when dealing with Dunta. I'd prefer Patrick Chung in the 2nd round but think that he'll be gone by #46 and think that William Moore offers us a massive upgrade at SS with the ability to play FS as well and we all know Kubiak loves players that are versatile. David Bruton in the 4th offers us someone with great speed, size, toughness, and hitting ability who should be a special teams standout until 2010 when he's ready to take over at FS. This draft offers us massive improvement to our secondary, O-line, and running game as well as some quality backup/rotational players and fills all of our holes with the exception of DT, which I really don't think we need since we've changed coaching staff and added Cody.

Not saying the texans would or should, but i would take the best lb/de player availible. Bush is a 5 man pressure guy and you need that flexibility. Get English,Sintom, or Matthews by moving down to 20 ish. Then move up in the 2nd to about 40 by giving up a 4th and a depth player like Johnson to take smith from utah. In the 3rd, Caldwell the center looks really good because he can play guard which gives you leverage against pitts and gives you a guy who can play center and guard.

given a choice between someone who's a hitter but can't cover or someone that's a ballhawk who can tackle but doesn't "bring the wood", I'll take the guy who's more able to cover and provide over-the-top support. Now maybe there's no one like that in this draft, but, IMHO, that's what we need to solidify our back end defense.

Rashad Johnson and Derek Pegues probably fill what you are looking for.

At first this seems like kind of a weak draft but it addresses the secondary well and the Oline/Rb well so the bases are covered. I don't see CB as top priority, definitely up there but I dunno about #1...

It's terrible. and let me telll ya why. Your first two guys are major gambles....more of a gamble than the LB. One is 183, who is going to have a hard time holding up on the edge and the bigger WCO Receivers. He is a nickle corner.....and only a nickle corner. The second one was in a funk his whole senior year....and you do not know at this point if you are going to get the '07 version or the '08 version. Other than that a fine effort. Mathews will get on the field out of camp. and he will be everything and more than advertised.
