Kubiak Comments on #15, Okoye, and Brown

TexanAddict

Texan 'til I Die
From ESPN's AFC South Blog:

What do you expect out of your first-round pick?

Our first-round pick has to have a big impact on our team. The more the first-round pick continues to be an impact player, the better we're going to get. We could still use an impact player at linebacker and on the backend (but) we'd be hard-pressed to take a receiver or a running back in the first round.

How important is it for you to hit a home run with that pick?

It's very important. We've made progress, and for us to make some more progress, that guy has to be an impact player.

On Okoye's second-year drop off and expectations for him now:

Amobi's got to become an impact player. You talk about this year's No. 1 pick becoming an impact player, that's what we need him to do. When it comes to taking the next step for our defense, Amobi's more important than anybody. I was a little disappointed last season but not with his work. He battled a high ankle sprain. I think we're over those things. He's grown up. He's more mature. I like the way he's started the offseason. Bill [Kollar] has a good reputation with players like Amobi and what his talent is as far as coming off the ball. It's a big year for him."

On what Kubiak wants to see from Okoye:

I want to see him be active, be a factor. We want him to be a factor in all phases of the game. Sometimes I think he worried so much about trying to get sacks that he forgot about having fun and just cutting it loose and playing the game. Sacks aren't the most important thing. We expect him to be a big-time contributor.

If Okoye is the one defensive player who has to step up, who's the one offensive player who has to step up?

I think Duane Brown has to take another step forward. There's no more coming off the field like he did last year [when backup Ephraim Salaam played every fourth series]. He made a lot of progress as a rookie starting every game, and now he has to make more to help our offense be more successful.

Nothing too Earth-shattering in there, but still good to read

Last time I checked we've got an "impact player at linebacker", so I'm guessing he means another one ?
And I dunno what he means by "the backend" ? The defensive backfield ?
BTW coach, you still need another edge-rusher across from Mario. Did you forget ?

Shhhh... this misdirection is part of his jedi plan. Don't spoil it.

That kind of threw me too at first. I suspect it'd be like him saying "We need an impact pass rusher from the DE spot". I don't think he is discounting Demeco (or in this hypothetically Mario) but saying we need [another] one. another being implied.

Good read, I love hearing things straight from the horses...err Coache's mouth! Very interesting about his comment on the WR and RB in the 1st. I like hearing that but hope it doesn't mean he'd reach for a D player. I'd rather him be thinking we should trade down and target a/the D player further down. Can't wait for the draft!

C'mon man, at 15 who is there to put across from Mario? Did you forget to account for the situation? Sounds like LB/DB are the preferred choice at #15 but that certainly has little impact on whether or not they try for another DE later, besides the guy they just signed. Don't know if I would put him down as forgetting just yet.

is this the old Jedi mind trick to make folks think we're going Cushing or Matthews???

Yea, I think we go best LB available, @ 15 unless Jinkin's fall's to us which I think thay will consider

Sounds like that is waht he is implying. I hope Vonte Davis is gone so we dont even have to consider him. I would take Darius Butler over him any day of the week. Yes even at 15.

So lets see, Jenkins, Davis and Butler are the only CB's worthy of 15. There are absolutely no S's worth that high of a pick. Kubiack has made it known that Demeco isnt moving outside so any LB we draft would have to be an "impact player" on the outside. That leaves Curry, Mathews and possibly Barwin, English and Sintim? All of these LB's bring the added bonus of being able to put their hand down and russ the passer.

Wonder who it will be?

Actually after rereading Kubiacks comments im confused alittle.

"We could still use an impact player at linebacker and on the backend (but) we'd be hard-pressed to take a receiver or a running back in the first round."

Bakend has to mean CB right? Plus why does he add "(but) we'd be hard-pressed to take a receiver or a running back in the first round."? Just seems like there was no reason to even add that remark. Oohhhh my head is spinning. I cant wait until the draft dammit.

That comment confuses me as well. We don't need a 1st round WR or RB yet I can't tell what he is implying with that comment.

Does it mean we're going to pull "a Duane Brown" and pick a player nobody had going in the 1st to fill our needs on :d:?

I seriosuly think its going to be OLB, all I hope is we don't reach for a player like Tyrone McKenzie or whatever.

The ONLY offensive player I can see us taking in the 1st round would be Maclin. He is the only guy that would be available that would be justified with the 15th pick. Oher is a possiblity, but then do we move Duane Brown to Guard? I don't really know how that would work out.

Either Maclin or Oher on the Board are possiblilties, though probably not likely.
But as always predicated on what other players remain on the Board for our pick and opportunities (if any) to move back, either of these 2 offensive players might represent the BPA at #15, even if not a need compared to other areas.

This means we aren't looking at LB or DE.

we'll most likely draft a receiver or runningback.

Everytime Kubiak talks to the media I can't help but think "Smoke Screen activate!"

I don't see Kubiak looking for a LB when he talked up Diles, then the kid excelled, and everybody seems to like Adibi after the way he sparked the defense last year. Where does that leave a rookie?

If we're looking at Texans draft history we're going to pass on a USC guy that everybody is fawning over, and pick an athletic freak DE despite signing a 3-4 DE to a huge FA contract. Michael Johnson?

Keeley Hazell, British supermodel.

Dude u are a genius.. good taste btw, I'm bout to google that *****

On another note... i would like matthew's @ 15, to help our pass rush... the more pressure on the qb, the less accurate he will be which will lead to sacks, int, fumbles, and loss of down's

I wonder what's going to be going on while you google that ****...

He'll be googling it... :shades:

The Texans always try and put up a smokescreen it seems, so you can never tell. I would love to have Matthews, but a DE would work too. I just wish the draft was here and gone so we would have real players and scenarios to talk about.

Blame rap music...

I'd really like to see us trade up for Orakpo.

If we stay at 15 these are the guys I think Smithiak will be looking at drafting.

1.Barwin my choice
2. Matthews talented, has room to improve
3. M.Johnson Atheletic freak
4. M. Jenkins Can help at CB-S might be to slow to play CB
5. V. Davis High risk, High reward, Can play S

See I think we could get all of those guys, outside of Jenkins & Davis, in the 20's. Jenkins will not get past us at #15 and I don't want any part of Davis. As for Barwin, Johnson, & Matthews I still think they will be available early 20's. No point in reaching for them when we could trade back and pick up some extra picks.

If Barwin's drafted in the 1st, it's more proof this years first round talent sucks.

I like Barwin a lot, but 1st round talent he is not.

I find it extremely interesting that he went out of his way to imply things about our needs and and what we're not looking for by merely mentioning RB and QB. I really believe we're going to be very surprised and possibly upset at the selection come draft dasy. He did not mention OL or WR at all. Draft day is going to be truly exciting with Kubiak and Smith at the helm. They've not failed to surprise us yet. I'm loving it!

Well they better suprise in a good way because I don't want to be sitting there going "Wtf?" like I was when we took Travis Johnson in the 1st a few years ago.

I took it to mean that it's a fluid decision when the no. 15 pick is on the clock. Depending on what is done from pick 1 to pick 14, there is room for Kubiak to adjust and grab a WR or a RB if they think that's an impact player.

That is GOOD news. This means he's got some BPA in his blood, that he's not locked into getting a certain position for position's sake.

In addition, let's say someone is sitting at pick 23 and they see that we're on the clock. What has Kubiak said leading up to the draft? He has basically put teams on notice that if they want a certain guy, they better trade up with us.

At least he sees LB and DB as the major need for the team. It's encouraging to think that they are tyring really hard to firm those two positions up.

Barwin = Jason Babin 2.0

FAIL

Barwin ran a 4.47 @ his pro day, Babin has never ran a 4.47 in his life.

He is versatile he can play LB, DE, TE Babin couldn't do that in his wildest dreams.

Not every white guy who plays DE is Babin & Smithiak shouldn't remove him from their 1st rd. because of Babin.

Barwin reminds me more of Jared Allen than Babin

Sad to see some people can't take a joke.. after that comment, I took a few. Sorry I offended u, I didn't think ur feeling's would be involved

The biggest question I have after reading this is…

which position is the “backend”. Is he referring to safety or corner? I am contend to not draft a corner until the 4th, because I think we need someone to compete with Bennett, for the nickel in case Molden has any set backs. But that is assuming Reeves is the long term solution as a #2. I still think we will pickup a strong safety in the second. It makes no sense that we should not draft a really nice safety (Louis Delmas, Patrick Chung, Michael Hamlin, or Rashad Johnson) just because we have Barber, what has he really accomplished?

I think what he is saying is that we need to get a S because that's who they were looking at during the EAST-WEST Shrine game & th Senior Bowl.

The will also be looking for a CB somewhere in the draft to replace Petey.

This is what I'm thinking. He's going to see how the draft plays out and if a RB is the best player there, he will go after him. If it's a DE he will go after him. Wr etc...

Just glad to see that they've narrowed down the needs and is open to the BPA thing.

I doubt that anything is set in stone. Furthermore, I doubt that they will know exactly what direction they're going in until the player is pretty much picked....

I don't think that there is one voice for the whole draft process so I think that everything is fluid, and there will be some internal debates about what the organization needs to do...Especially this year when it doesn't appear that we have so many gaping holes, and with there not being a whole lot of noticeable difference between players skill levels in the range where we'll be picking...

Basically, I don't think Kubiak knows who we'll be drafting at this point either...Of course they have some players that they deem as their favorites, but that list most likely includes over a hundred players...

Robert Ayers, Jarron Gilbert, Tyson jackson......move up and take Orackpo.

I'd rather reach for somebody like Alphonso Smith(if Jenkins isn't there) than take any Linebacker in this class not named Curry.

well unless he's blowing smoke to work a deal...he just told you no on the Beaner....Jenkins is still a posiblity. And I loved it ....
