The Miami Dolphins have traded one-time starting center Samson Satele to the Oakland Raiders for a draft choice.

Satele became available this spring when the Dolphins signed former Raiders starting center Jake Grove as an unrestricted free agent three weeks ago.

The trade was first reported by the Miami Herald and confirmed Monday morning by representatives for both players. Oakland will receive a sixth-round pick and the two sides will swap selections in an undisclosed round, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com's Bill Williamson.

The 24-year-old Satele started all 32 games for Miami the past two seasons. A former University of Hawaii star who was named to several all-rookie teams in 2007, Satele was the Dolphins' second-round pick in that year's draft.

His durability aside, Satele was believed by Miami coaches to be not strong enough to regularly handle the mammoth nose tackles in the AFC East. An offseason goal of the Dolphins was to upgrade at center, if possible.

Wow. That's actually kind of a surprise to me. I had the Phins in one of our mocks and had read similar things about his size, but I thought they were going to give him a shot at Guard.

What surprises me is that The Raiders actually made a deal for a 6th and an undisclosed swap that actually looks solid.

True. I remember Satele as being a pretty highly touted player in that draft. Was he overrated coming from a system like Hawaii? Sounds like he might have been.

I remember Satele looking like a possibility with the Texans due to their need at Center....and even to this day Center continues to be a position that has yet to be seriously addressed

Satele came out with all the ZBS buzz words on his ability and looked to be a good fit in most zone blocking schemes. Sounds like he didn't fit the Parcells mold of a Center and was shipped off to Oakland.
