What would you do?

1. Lions – Andre Smith OT, Alabama. Need to protect whoever you put back there at QB. I think the fans would like to see Drew Stanton take the reigns at QB.

2. Rams – Aaron Curry LB, Wake Forest. I see the Rams continuing to build through the defense. Chris Long and Aaron Curry could grow together to be a great tandem. I see Curry as their SLB.

3. Chiefs – Brian Orakpo, DE Texas. The Chiefs only had 10 sacks last year, and of course they were the second worst defense, better than only the Lions.

4. Seahawks – Knowshon Moreno, RB Georgia. Moreno is versatile and a big play threat and the Seahawks don’t have either at RB. I think Moreno will have a great combine and come out as the top RB.

5. Browns – Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB, Penn State. McGinest is done as a starter. The Browns need to give Wimbley someone to play opposite to create a better pass rush in that 3-4.

6. Bengals – Chris Wells, RB Ohio State. The Bengals need to upgrade their RB core. I thought about Crabtree here to get rid of Ocho Cinco, but Wells makes more sense.

7. Raiders – Michael Crabtree, WR Texas Tech. This time it may be smart for Al Davis to buy the hype. Crabtree is the best WR in the draft and could be the biggest playmaker. The Raiders don’t have a #1 receiver, and JaMarcus Russell can’t progress without one.

8. Jaguars – Michael Oher, OT Mississipi. Have to protect your QB, and Oher should play right away for the Jags.

9. Packers – Malcolm Jenkins, CB Ohio State. This may come as a surprise pick because the Packers have good starting CBs in Woodson and Al Harris, but both of them are above 32. They have Tramon Williams for the future, and Jenkins could seal the position up, while allowing Jenkins to grow into the system.

10. 49ers – Matthew Stafford, QB Georgia. Niners could use a QB badly.

11. Bills – Brandon Pettigrew TE , Oklahoma State. Pettigrew is a great TE and could help out this offense a lot blocking and receiving.

12. Broncos – B.J. Raji DT, Boston College. Broncos need help up the middle. Raji can play either DT spot, and can collapse the pocket.

13. Redskins – Eugene Monroe, OT Virginia. The Redskins could put Monroe at LT or move him to the right. They could even move him inside to guard.

14. Saints – Vontae Davis, CB Illinois. Saints need a top flight corner and this guy has a real shot at being one in a couple years.


The first 14 picks have gone by and it's now time for the Texans to make their first round pick.

Everette Brown is the obvious answer.

Maybe we consider Maualuga, Moore, and Jerry for the sake of due diligence, but Brown is the best fit.

Not a bad pick, but where were the elite safeties in last years Conference Championship games, or the year before? Once you get past Bob Sanders, you're pretty much 0-7.

I'm not disagreeing with your pick, but you're giving the position too much cause and effect. Elite players are going to exist on any genuine championship caliber team - this year more than one of them were coincidentally playing safetly.

Rey Maualuga. Move him to SLB!
 
I don't think Maybin will go as a 3-4 OLB, and I would be pretty upset if we reached for Brown at 15. I would look for one of the two USC LB's, Cushing or Maualuga with Maualuga being the preference. I would give a look to Moore and Alphonso Smith. They just make plays on the ball, and we don't have any guys like that. In short, I think Everette Brown at 15 is a bad choice, and I think that Everette Brown for the 4-3 is a bad choice as well.

Side note: I've been having a dream the past two nights that Curry falls to us.
 
A new "what would you do"... basically I'm trying to think of a worst case situation. Much like the 2008 draft where all 'our' top guys were gone. Rashard Mendenhall and Mike Jenkins were available but we traded down, could be a similar situation this year.

That would suck. I would just hope we don't reach for a lesser talent like '08. Maybe we could look for someone who has at least had previous success (A. Smith for example). Duane Brown had neither first round talent nor previous success. This upsets me, so I will remain hopeful for this go around.

I would use Sanchez as trade bait. If nobody bites, go with D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt.

That really is a terrible scenario for us.
 
the one guy that scares the crap out of me who I think the Texans might consider in this situation is Cushing. just don't have a good feel for the guy, but on paper & in film he looks all-world.

And yet, people say he's Brian Bosworth or a guy that just likes to work out and isn't really a football player.

I don't know how much of that is smoke screen, though.

He over runs plays. Coaching should take care of that. And I remember the Warren Sapp draft. Lot of smoke flying over Sapp. But the smoke has scared me off the guy too. Don't know if it was steroids or good grass...but those teats came from some where.

If Everette Brown can flip his hips and demonstrates he has the feet to stand up next month....I like that pick too. But you're not going to sneak the guy in on third down against Manning.
