Tony Dungy is resigning as coach of the Colts

I can't say I'm surprised since he has basically spoke as a year-to-year coach for the last three years and delayed his decision until the end of each season. I wish him well.
 
How do you think this will affect the Colts? With a much softer out of division schedule next year I would love for the teams in our division to go through some change and a rocky period.

Tennessee going with Kerry Collins, who'll be 37-38 next season and potentially losing Big AL
Jacksonville was already crappy this year

this is the best possible news for the Texans right now. However, I respect Dungy more than any other coach in the league, and wish him well in whatever he decides to do with his retirement.
 
Sorry, I don't have any love for a head coach that makes a decision to leave a starting QB in when a game is out of hand and allows his OC and QB to throw deep in that situation.

I wouldn't expect a huge dropoff in the Colts..the guy they hired is already there and so there won't be that transition. And they've known this was was a strong possibility so it's not a kick in the teeth or anything.

Running up the score is a controversial issue. If the opposing players don't like it, they know how to stop it. The best way to ensure a win is to keep playing the game until the clock reads 0. We know what its like to go into conservative mode at the end of games and have it bite you

I don't consider any game out of hand after seeing a certain team lose after being up 35-3.
 
I'm a bit surprised, but not shocked. I think Tony wants to concentrate on his life again and I think the best years of the Colts are behind them.

He's a class act and the NFL is losing a good guy. But I'm happy for him and his family.

I'm the first to agree with that philosophy.

But you can do it with removing Manning. I always thought someday Manning would get sacked and injured in that situation. I didn't wish for it to happen, but had it happened I would have blamed Dungy. I would have less of a problem if Sorgi were throwing the bombs.

As far as comparing TGTSNBM (western New York), the Oilers didn't necessarily go conservative. They went cold. Ice cold. Warren decided he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.
 
I think the Colts will continue to be the Colts that's always been our greatest nemisis because of their QB Peyton Manning, who has no intentions of going anyway, in spite of losing their current HC.
 
Sad to see him go. He's the main reason I've pulled for the Colts in our division when it was pretty obvious our Texans were going to bottom out. A classy guy!! I wish him well.

I'm not sure he'll be back either; he has a career waiting as a motivational speaker and author. I think he's done with coaching.
 
Until our President-elect won the election, I dunno if there was any man who was such a compelling role-model for young African-American men as Coach Dungy ? And from what I've heard him say helping troubled young adults in the Indy area will be something he devotes his attention to after coaching. And he also said he wouldn't be taking a year or two off then be back into coaching, but rather when he left the Indy HC job that would be the end of coaching for him. Period.

I have no reason not to belive Tony Dungy but at this point I'm willing to bet he's back in the NFL at some point maybe not as a head coach, but maybe as a gm or something.
 
I'm sorry to see him go. A true class act as a man. I was a little upset about Pay-me-a-ton throwing bombs in a blowout, but by the same token, that's their offense, and if we can't stop it, that's the Texans fault not the Colts.

I believe I read somewhere that he has a bought a home in Tampa and would be returning upon retirement.
 
His family has remained in Tampa for some years now and he's the one that was away from them...his son died there I believe.

So I'm presuming he'll go home to Tampa.
 
Good for the Texans win-loss column, bad for the NFL. He will be missed. But I have a feeling he'll make as much of difference in the Tampa/FL area with troubled youths as much as he did in the NFL all around.

The Mrs. has been a fan of his since his Tampa days. But she also thinks this is sad for us, but good for the difference he will make and the people he will help with his time.

I thought that he might decide to pursue some of his other ambitions & walk away from football after hearing how excited he got when he was asked what he wanted to do outside of football. He's seems very passionate about being involved with young people & helping them find their way. Very admirable.

Very true. I know that his players as well as many others around the league will miss him. Best of luck to him in his future endeavors though.

Sad to see him go. I don't like the Titans and Jags, but I never really had any hard feelings for the Colts and Dungy is a big reason why. Hard to root against him. I wish him well in his future endeavors.

Actually, the entire family moved to Indy when he took the job with the Colts. The son who took his life actually graduated from an Indianapolis area HS, and then moved back to Tampa to go to college. Tony's wife and kids moved back to Tampa about a year ago, so they've been "living apart" since then.

Tampa was always home to them, but they were living in Indy until then.

No kidding. There is no such thing as a "safe" lead for ANY Houston team. The score could be 56-0 Texans with 5 minutes to go...I wouldn't feel safe...thanks to the Oilers...and Sage Rosencopter...
 
Pretty good coach. For me to say he's "great" I think one more SB appearance would have been necessary. That team just had so much talent for so many years.

He's a good man, a classy coach, and his persona will be missed. Though I vehemently disagree with his Evangelical Christian beliefs and intolerance of gay people - I still respect him for what he is.
 
One of my favorite coaches; I'm sad to see him leave the NFL, but happy to see him leave a rival.

Dungy Leaves NFL for Higher Calling

Unlike other departing coaches who immediately head for television announcing gigs or the golf course, Dungy has far more important things in mind. Like trying to influence others with positive messages beyond the three Christian-themed books he already has written.

For the past several years, Dungy was torn between staying in the NFL and the pursuit of nobler endeavors. When meeting with Colts media last week, a then-undecided Dungy discussed his desire to eventually become involved in such undertakings as prison ministry and family-oriented works like mentoring teenagers.

The latter became even closer to Dungy's heart following the 2005 suicide of his 18-year-old son James.

Dungy couldn't be blamed had he walked away from coaching then. He instead became an example of how to persevere through immeasurable grief. Dungy was rewarded the following season when Indianapolis won Super Bowl XLI, reaffirming that nice guys can still finish first among his predominantly cut-throat peers.

It wasn't the first or last time Dungy would serve as a role model.

I applaud him and think he will do even bigger things. Nothing is more important than reaching people for Christ, imho.
 
In related new Colts owner Jim Irsay has asked the court for a temporary restraining order against Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden saying Gruden has been seen parked in front of his house the last couple of days. :D
