Our Answer to DE Issue?

As I was reading some of the posts on TexansTalk, a thought occurred to me. Maybe I've mentioned this before I dunno but what about letting Tim Bulman or Earl Cochran start at DE across from Mario instead of Weaver? From the games Iv'e seen, both Bulman and Cochran played well everytime they went into the game and were able to get to the QB and provide pressure. What do yall' think?

:wild:

I've seen Bulman get manhandled in the running game after watching him closer...he doesn't look like starter material to me. Cochran is a decent all around player but we need a speed rusher who can hold up vs the run at the weak side edge.

A couple of space eating DT's would go along way and let the DE keep contain on the weakside.

Well Let's draft both in the 1st & 2nd round of the draft and spend the rest of the money on free agents at other positions.

i Dont think we need a DE i wouldnt mind if we had weeaver agiant

our more pressing need is DT like yall where saying a Big guy to smash and eat the middle

He had severe injury issues. If he stays healthy and the coaches can get something out of him - that'd be a godsend.

Also - we have that guy we signed who almost immediately went on IR - Stanley McClover. The coaches were excited to be able to sign him.

It's actually going to be quite a logjam in camp at the other DE:

Weaver
Bauzin
Cochran
Bulman
McClover
Nading (who I think might turn out to be a player)

Am I leaving anyone out?

Unpossible! The Panthers extended Chris Gamble already, so Peppers is destined for the franchise tag if he doesn't sign long term with Carolina.

May be true for one more year, but at some point the price is going to be prohibitive. Peppers is already one of the top 5 paid DE's in the league so he won't get the typical franchise number, he will get this year's pay plus 20%.

All immaterial anyway--I don't see the Texans even talking to him.

But let's get crazy and sign Fat Albert, Peppers, and Nmadi this off-season (even if it's just in our minds) and see what happens. It would be impossibly sick. Williams, Okoye, Haynesworth, and Peppers on the front four would be awe inspiring (assuming Okoye steps up to the level we all want him to). Our secondary would be damn near as scary with Dunta and Asomugha back there benefitting from all that pressure up front. We draft the best safety we can and the rest is history.

Now THAT is what I call "Fantasy" football.

to my untrained eye, he looks the best of the DE bunch (including orakpo) by a good bit.. he has moves to go along with his lethal speed. i wouldnt even mind if we had to use a pick to trade up and get him

to those like me that dont watch college fb- heres a 10 min highlight vid that i just saw. killer spin move

Quite a highlight reel there. I'm interested but I wonder if he'll be around when we pick. I can't imagine he will still be there. On the other hand he'll be a junior and you know how much we love drafting young, developmental players in the first round here in Houston.

Heh. Seems Kubiak and Smith have high esteem in their "eye" for talent.
This pays HUGE dividends, if you really DO have an "eye" for talent. The
last 3 drafts have proven them correct (Zac Diles - 7th Round! Chris Myers
for a 6th Round Pick! Steve Slaton 3rd Round! Xavier Adibi 4th Round!
Antwaun Molden 3rd Round! Demeco Ryans FALLS to the Second Round!)

I haven't seen many BONAFIDE busts in the Smith/Kubiak drafts. People like to say Okoye,
but that's nitpicking. It's OBVIOUS that Okoye has talent, and to me, he's just been
misused.

It seems that their plan is to develop RAW TALENT, and sign them long
term, BEFORE going for adding any high-dollar free agents. This will insure that
you have a competitive team on the field perennially. This is also the
first season where teams no longer can circle the Texans on their schedules
as an "automatic win." It should only get better from here.

Great video I don't watch a whole bunch of college football either but I've seen enough of him to know that I want him. Right now we are listed to pick 15th. When do you think that he will be taken off the board?

well fwiw, hes only pick #24 on the nfldc mock but i also think he'll rise. alot less impressive guys like michael johnson are ahead of him

he's #11 on walterfootball

I'm not sold on Brown. I think he's a little light to be an effective NFL pass rusher.

Then again - I don't know where he's expected to be drafted... I certainly wouldn't draft him in the first round, at least not at 15.

Is he a first round prospect?

EDIT - Okay, I see he is a first round prospect. That kind of surprises me.

I don't think Bulman or Cochran are "our answer to DE issue" as the title asks, but from your post, I'll agree that I've really liked their play and think they should see the field more.

Re: Everette Brown- best pass rusher in the draft. I think he'll be a pro bowl OLB (maybe his rookie season) on a 3-4 team. I will need to watch more to be convinced he's the right 4-3 RDE for our team. We will really need a NT to let him and Amobi shine. No doubt he's a tremendous player and a 1st round talent in my book.

Everette Brown to me is a typical florida st. defensive end that don't pan out in the NFL. I think he will be drafted in the late first round but i think that he is Boom/Bust type player that is a risky choice. He is coming from one of the weakest conferences in college football the ACC and I know that you guys will say Mario played in that same conference but I think that Mr. Brown is to Risky at 15.

What makes Mario so special is that a guy with his speed & overall athletic
prowess is the kinda guy that just dosn't come along very often in the body of a 6'6"-6'7", 280-290 lb man. The only other one like him in the league as I recall is Peppers ? Guys like this are rush ends & still big & strong enough to handle the run.
The point is we may have to simply draft a Brown or a Selvie, even with our first round pick, to get a real edge rusher across from Mario in spite of the fact that he may not be an every down player. More than anything else we
urgently need to get consistant pressure on the QB. That's just how important it is to us. Any doubts ? Just ask Richard Smith.

Seems to be alot of diversity in opinions of Everette Brown.

I never understood how people can say typical player from so and so school. Doesn't make sense to me. And I beg to differ about the ACC. Look at defensive players taken on the first day in the last couple years and the ACC dominates every conference besides the SEC.

I think you will see Brown drafted in the top half of the first round because every team with a pass rusher will be eyeing him. He can fit the 4-3 RDE role and he is athletic enough to play 3-4 OLB rusher. He even took snaps at DT during passing downs to create mismatches in the last few games this season. He is a very versatile player.

I'd love to grab him because I think he is exactly what we need opposite Mario as our weakside DE.

I think ALOT of you are going to be very suprised once the combine comes around and you get an idea of how strong he really is, because you already know that he is fast.

After looking at that highlight reel Brown reminds me of another slightly undersized DE with a killer spin move: Dwight Freeney.

I watched part of the bowl game FSU & Wisc played and I tracked Brown for awhile but really wasn't that wowed ? And I noticed that the final score was like a 4 TD margin by FSU, meaning a lot of passes by a badly trailing Wisc,
and yet 0 sacks ?

OMT, I have some of the same concerns as you about Brown being suited to DE in a 4-3, but if we need a "speed" rusher opposite Mario, I think he would be the best choice. He's listed as 6'4" 250, which is a little light, but if you look at Mathis on the Colts, he is listed as 6'2" 245. And, the other top DE's in this draft (Orakpo, Johnson, Selvie, Hardy) are all listed in the 250 to 260 pound range. Just food for thought.

Oh, as far as picking a NT, Raji out of BC, 6'1" 325 lbs, might still be there in the 2nd, or Dorell Scott from Clemson, 6'4" 313 lbs, could be there in the 3rd.

We've been running a different 'style' of defense than Indy, what our 'style' is is anyones guess! LOL. Another thing about the Colts DL is that their starting DT's are both in the 250 - 260 lbs range. That's an awful light DL. In regards to Brown as our RDE, if he's the pick I'll be on board. I think he has more potential than the other DE/OLBs in this draft (save Orakpo). We'll need to build around Brown... but that could be said for ANY defensive end we draft this year. His ability to get to the QB off the edge is the most important factor and he can do that.

I like Raji a lot but don't think he's going to last till our 2nd rd pick. Depending on the board, I kind of like him with our 1st. Could trade down and maybe get him? I've raised the question before, but depending on how these prospects are "projected", what if we end up trading our 2nd and 3rd rounders to move up to the late first. How would we feel if we got DE Everette Brown and NT BJ Raji spending our 1st, 2nd and 3rd rd picks this year? If they're the right players that our staff likes, this would go a long way to helping our whole defense.

I'm not familiar with Scott, thanks for the heads up and I'll get to reading about him.

You didn't watch hard enough. They barely threw a pass in the first half and only 16 in the game. As soon as we were up by 3 scores in the 4th quarter they dropped back to pass and E Brown sacked the QB, and forced a fumble that was quickly returned by a LB for a touchdown.

your much too modest. ole miss has three players all of which I would love to see as Texans. one just happens to play DE Hardy another DT Peria & of course Oher who has zero chance of still being there @ #15. still Hardy in the 1st & Peria in the 2nd would be near ideal :specnatz:

I sure we will draft a DE and maybe pick one up in free agency. As far as Bulman goes - he may not have the raw talent but no one can question that dude's heart and desire to be on the field. I don't know how many times I have seen him chasing down a play over 10 yards downfield and getting in on the tackle. But like Kubes said in training camp - it's a nice problem to have when you are struggling to cut guys. I just wished some of these guys with all the measurables had as much heart as guys like Bulman.

If I got that sack stats wrong, please excuse. My source said there were no sacks in that game but apparently it was in error.
And if you're guy is as good as you think he is, I sure hope we get a shot at drafting him in April.

I think the Noles got to the Wisconson QB twice, possibly three times. Brown only got to him once.

I am watching for info on Brandon Graham 6'3" 270 with 4.72 speed. May be available in 2nd depending on where we end up. In first, I want free safety William Moore if there.

Does anyone know about this Dan Bazium on our practice Squad??

Second Round pick by the Chicago Bears........
After his two surgeries he still had pain under the knee cap due to a bone on bone condition. After being released by Chicago, on his own, he had a new procedure done where they eject a lubricating substance under the knee cap to take the place of the cartilage he had lost. He's suppose to have this done twice a year I believe.

We'll have to wait and see, but he says this has really worked a miracle and he no longer plays with pain.

Boy I hope this is true and we can see the real player. Although a Babin clone, he WAS just a hair quicker in the 10 and 20 yard range that DE's play in.

A real Defensive Coordinator, and a real Nose Tackle will go a long way to fixing the problems at the Defensive End position opposite of Mario.

For Instance, I believe the Texans should find a DC that will run the 4-3 Under as our base defense, maybe someone like Rod Marinelli. Then, during Free Agency we could sign a real NT like Tank Johnson. He probably could be had for a reasonable contract. In the first round if we aren't able to draft a DE maybe a great FS will be there, and then we will get a DE in the second round and a SLB in the third round.

I know he isn't very popular on this board with some people but I think Michael Johnson will be the Texans pick if he falls to 15.

I'm really interested in Clay Matthews at SLB. He is currently being projected as a 2nd or 3rd round pick. If the Texans could draft him in the 3rd I think that could be a real steal.

the Texans are looking for more speed @ RDE. 6040 265 would be ideal. not going to mirror Mario instead compliment. will pay close attention in a few minutes to Michael Johnson, Georgia Tech but don't think he's best fit. when all is said & done Ole Miss DE Junior Greg Hardy could be the name called in April by the Texans. above average length, explosive, elite edge speed unlike any player in a Texans uniform. they play Texas Tech Friday lets see how much pressure he can apply to Graham Harrell. I also like his line mate Jerry Peria, DT 6030 300, tough as nails with non-stop motor with 2nd rd. pick.

line set. end of story.

DE is one of the most difficult positions to draft for. It just seems that so many high picks which seem to have the potential don't pan out. It's really a hit or miss proposition. We have invested so many first round picks on the DL, I'd be a little gun shy taking this position so high again.

Who knows what changes our new DC is going to make, but I'd have to seriously consider moving DeMeco to the outside and drafting a bad ass MLB with the first, if he's there. There are several in this draft and one may be available in the middle of the round, where we'll be drafting.

I'd then consider DL in the 2nd. As much as I'd like to improve at OC and OG, I'm going with the idea of drafting defense with our first three picks.

Everette Brown.

I like the idea, if we can manage to get him in the 2nd round. I'm starting to warm to the idea of going after Cody (DT) or Raji (DT) with our 1st round pick & snagging Brown in the 2nd.

This would be all the sweeter if we go hard after Asomugha in free agency & manage to sign him, along with Dunta. Add a new DC to the mix & we could be one scary defensive team with one hell of a potent offensive team to go along with it.

Jesse Nading seemed to play a pretty good game against Chicago. I didn't watch him very much but when i would notice him is when he was using a bull rush and getting pretty good penitration. The game wasn't televised in Austin so I didn't get to go back and key on him but maybe i'll subscribe to that rewind thing and go back and watch...

How is Tank Johnson a REALL NT??? He has the same size as Travis Johnson, don't NTs have to be at least 330-lbs or more? From all the NTs I know of (Haloti Ngata, casey Hampston, etc.) they are around 340 or 330-lbs.

You have to look at how their weight is distributed, not just the number. Also, you can look at how they perform at the point of attack. Tank Johnson isn't pushed off the blocks by one lineman the way Travis Johnson often is.

The 2 you named are also NT's in 3-4 Defenses. NT's in 3-4 Defenses typically are larger then NT's in 4-3 Defenses. It is true that Tank Johnson is currently playing NT for a 3-4 Defense in Dallas, but he also played NT in a 4-3 Defense in Chicago, and he was better at it in that alignment in my opinion.
