09 Texans should avoid high priced FA

It is common knowledge among football experts that the way to build winners is through the draft. One or two quality players rarely do enough for a team to instantly make them a playoff contender. I know that the Texans will be 30 million under the salary cap next year but that doesn't necessarily mean that the Texans must go after some of the best defensive players to become UFA in years. It has been proven time and time again that these glorified paycheck seekers are not worth the money teams spend on them.......

No team wins exclusively through the draft. Good trades and free agents are needed to suppliment it. A good free agent to fill a big weakness is a good thing.
 
Uncharacteristically I think McNair will open up his pocketbook to sign a big name after he pays some established Texan players needing a new contract who have become mainstays of the team like DeMeco & OD. And I'm sure he'll make every effort to resign D-Rob, but hopefully he won't be foolish ?
The best we can finsih now is 8-8 and that may be 7-9, so he's got to do something to reignite fan interest, especially in this tough economy. And big-FA signings are a way to do that even if they aren't necessarily a way to win football games. Like I said it would be uncharacteristic of McNair.

John Abraham was never a UFA. He was acquired in a 3 way deal between Denver, the Jets, and Atlanta.

Umm.. McNair ain't afraid to spend money on free agents.
He just didn't HAVE any cap space until this year. Casserly
kept signing BUMS and payed them LIKE top-flight free agents.
 
I would think a fair amount will be spent to retain the guys we have currently. Open Daniels, Dunta Robinson, Deljuan Robinson, Demeco Ryans Who else? Pitts is maybe in a contract year, Walter, etc... this is where expect to see the money go. The Winston deal earlier this year suggests that the way Mr Smith likes to operate is to nip it in the bud before it ever gets to that heated negotiation point.

However, that being said, as the Texans get better you will start to see bigger names here in free agency but I don't think anything in the past suggests that the organization has that "win with FA" mentality that some really dumb teams have. Where they blow the bank on some guy.(Go Browns!)
 
The only FA I would throw a blank check to is the Oakland CB. If he hits the market, he is a 28 year old #1 CB. He just shut down the best WR in football, and he has been doing it for a while to other great recievers. His youth is why I would go after him. He will have another contract after this one. He isn't looking for his last hoorah or final payday.

Agreed! Of course the draft should be the primary vehicle to build the team but, an ocassional key FA signing is done by most every team ...... except the Texans....
 
With their track record, I want zero part of expensive FAs. Wade, Greenwood, Weaver, Green, Reeves......OUCH. I'd rather they save the $15 million on one player and bring in alot minimum or undrafted players to duke it out. I'll take a hungrier, less talented guy over a mediocre player who just got paid.

This theory only holds true if you have shown no progress or were still trying to establish your team as something other than an expansion.

They had twenty three million in cap money......before they redid Mario....so you're saying you would of traded Mario and singed these two ? Or let Mario play out his deal and be a free agent after '09 ? Can't have it both ways.

Ya know they always post the guys who are lights out....So How'd Taylor do in Washington ? We have marginal talent at several defensive positions. We have a rookie LT and a 6th round center... and a young Right tackle. So, barring injuries they got to hit five guys, six if we're done with Chris Taylor...this off
season. What I believe they will do is exactly what they did last year. Find guys with experience locked behind guys who are starting on other clubs.

Walk down the hill . Do 'em all.
 
The Texans will have to get at least one big F/A signing at a Key Position maybe two signings will be done and I think now is the time but we have to go after the right free agents.
 
I don't think he'll be hi priced but i'd make a run at Tank Johnson. Apparently his past is behind him. We havent heard anything bad about him since he signed w/ Dallas (have we?) :d:
 
The problem with the previous free agents, none were considered great. Nmandi,albert,suggs,peppers are great players. You pay for great players but dont overpay for avg. In case someone missed it, nmandi is the only, only sickem corner in the league. He shuts 1 side down or a player. That allows you to roll coverage to the other side which allows you to pressure more also.

Champ Bailey is still the best CB in the league, bar none. However, I do agree with the rest of your post.
