Kevin Walter

How good is this guy? I think the play he made to shield off the DB and avoid another Sage INT could give Slaton's 71 yarder a run for its money for our play of the game. This guy does not screw up and does his job as a receiver and blocker. We need to find more like him, a lot more. A team with 11 Kevin Walter like players on each side of the ball wins 12 plus games every year. Just thought he deserved his own thread, he has been impressive this year.

Personally, I think it would be hard to win with an all WR team, but at this point, who knows.

The Solution

Seriously though, his work ethic is great. I really questioned him early on, but I agree that he's been one of the few constants on our team

I've been saying for three years that all Walter needed was a chance to show what he could do.

He's not terribly fast, but he runs well.

He has sure hands.

He blocks well.

He has a nose for first downs.

He's tough, too. I never see him run out of bounds rather than pick up the 1st down.

He, Daniels, and AJ are a great receing trio

What I meant to convey was an all Kevin Walter like team. As in a DT that is the Kevin Walter equivilant. I wonder what kind of numbers a Kevin Walter like QB would put up? Bet he wouldn't be throwing picks left and right. Etc. Etc. In fact if anyone is bored you can try and think of guys on other teams that play a different position than Walter but remind you of him. I'll throw a random one out there, London Fletcher. Always in the right spot, always makes plays, really underrated. Man I'm bored.

Chad Pennington.

Widely regarded to not have the skill set to be successful, but gets it done with hard work and smart play.

He's our version of Wes Welker. I'm extremely glad he's on the Texans. He's a hard worker who has to do more with less. Hmmm...I wish more folks on the team would follow his example.

A bit of a misconception is that he is slow. Not so, in fact, there was a catch a game or two ago that he out ran most of the DBs. He isn't a blazer, but he isn't slow either.

He reminds me of T.J. Housyourmama from the Bengals.

There was alot of talk last year about who should be the #2 receiver because Davis was playing well, but I don't think Walter needs to be moved from the #2 spot. He's been playing well the last 2 years.

He's fantastic, and I also have been screaming it for a while.

Yet, there are numbskulls on this very board that think Andre Davis should start in his place.

The guy has hands made of glue......has anyone seen him drop a pass on a 3rd down play?

I honestly can't remember the last time he dropped a pass in the regular season period. Only one I can remember is the preseason one last year that had some people up in arms.

That would be a great trivia question....when was the last time Walter dropped a pass?

Well I hope Jacoby Jones is watching and learning. Walter is a pro's pro. He could start as the #2 with anyone in the NFL.

Whoa...easy now. :tinfoil:

Arizona, Cincy, Indy, Pittsburgh, Washington, New England sure there are a lot of places he could go find a job but don't do that to him.

He's been great for us, really turning WR into a strength. I sure wish Jacoby had been the #2 we picked him for so KW could slice kids up from the slot but he's been great so...who cares?

IMO, Jacoby has performed well this year. He's made a few mistakes as a PR, but only a very few. When Kubiak has given him some burn at WR, he's made a few plays. The problem is that he can't make plays on the sideline. He should be given more of a chance than he is getting right now at WR. A coach shouldn't hide that kind of speed on the bench away from the defense.

Ill give you Arizona, but Cincy? They have two guys they cant wait to get rid of. Welker is a slot, plain and simple. Despite the game Harrison had, he has lost a step. Holes is a pot head. I dont know who the #2 is in Washington, so no comment there. Alot of teams would love KW as their #2.

Yeah, Im kinda tired of seeing David Anderson get all the #3 reps. He is never going to learn if he isnt on the field. Kubiak is to afraid to try somthing fresh.

You earn your game reps in practice.

If Anderson looks better to the coaches then he will play.

You don't just let Jones take his reps because he is younger.

You would take Walter over Johnson or the Housh? Not me. Welker's a slot but he's still a better reciever. Harrison is a HOF, no question. Moss and Randle El in Washington right? I'd take either of them before Walter. I didn't knock Walter though, he would be #2 for a lot of teams and make them better.

Lets see.

Moss 49rec 701yds 14.3avg 67Tlong 5td's

Randel El 37rec 455yds 12.3avg 31long 1td

Welker 72rec 718yds 10.0 29avg 1td

Walter 40rec 574yds 14.4avg 61long 6td

He is on par with Moss, and is really strong against the other two. I would also argue that his blocking is better than everybody on this list. Randel El has the arm that you can use, but he still would back up 83.The two Cincy guys, I would touch with a ten foot pole.

Well, the two Cincy guys are the two guys who kept him out of the starting lineup. Assclowns or not, they're better recievers. Welker has him beat by quite a bit. Randel El is more on par with Walter than Moss (who is also clearly a better reciever). Plus El returns kicks doesn't he?

Look, Walter is a good #2 WR but he isn't starting everywhere in the league. I think he's good, let's just not overrate him.

I don't really see any similarities between Welker and Walter other than they are both white. They are 2 completely different kind of receivers, and play different receiver positions as well.

Not sure where this comparison is coming from but it isn't a good one.

I have to agree with the comparison.

They are both quick, not top end speed burners, but quick. They are both very sure handed and catch everything that comes their way, great possessions recievers that aren't afraid to take a hit, that work well as the #2 or out of the slot, have a knack for finding soft spots in zone coverage, great balance, and a nose for the first down. They have good footlball instincts and a high football IQ. And they are both clutch. That's my take.

Why do you say they are not alike?

Anderson's more like Welker than Walter is - small and shifty slot guy. Walter's been compared several times to Ed McCaffrey if you're looking for white guy comparisons - big, reliable, no. 2 with deceptive speed.

We'll start with size. Welker is 5-9 185 per NFL.com. Walter is 6-3 215 per NFL.com. There is a good 1/2 foot and 30 pounds of difference in size. One guy (Welker) uses his quickness to find open spaces and make people miss. Walter uses his size to shield off defenders and break tackles.

They play different positions. Welker is a slot guy that uses his quickness to find the open space in zone coverage, and beat nickelbacks with quick routes in man coverage. That's what slot receivers are suppose to do. Walter is a #2. He lines up on the outside most of the time. The reason you see him going over the middle alot is because of his size and toughness.

My guess is if you lined up Welker at the #2 position consistently he would be alot less effective. Same thing goes if you put Walter at the #3 consistently.

They may both be quick, but Walter's quickness isn't anywhere near Welker's quickness IMO. Not saying Walter isn't quick but there is another level there he isn't on. They seem to have the same type of speed, but not quickness IMO.

You could compare any two effective receivers with the rest of that. High football IQ, good instincts, etc.

Only similarities I see are that they are both white, they aren't big names, and they both find ways to get open (which all good receivers do).

I'd say that the drama that Ocho Cinco brings would probably bring down his value a bit in the eyes of some coaches, on top of that, "Cinco" has not been very effective this year.

I can see Walter not being wanted by Dallas, Arizona, and probably Indy (for right now). After that I can't really see a team not wanting him as a #2 for their receiving corps.

Fact is, more teams than not would want K-dub for a multitude of reasons. Overrated or not, I think that's how it is.

OK , Ill give it to ya. I just know I would hate to have those two assclowns from Cincy on my team. Moss can be a little inconsistant. He is a much better play maker, but not as reliable. Same with El, who throws well too. Green Bay has better WR's than Cincy and Washington.

How is Houshmandzadeh an assclown?

That guy works his ass off.

Or are you saying that Chad Johnson is such an assclown that he should count as two of them?

KW is on pace for 970 yards this year. AJ already has a 1,000 so it would be kinda cool if he can get 1,000, too...

Really good stuff, TexNole. It is important to have the terms right, and discussions of WRs often get butchered when folks are comparing apples like Welker to oranges like Walter. Walter would not be a very good slot receiver for the reasons you discuss. His best use is lining up opposite AJ (which we're referring to as #2) where they form probably the most physical WR combo in the league.

IMO, Anderson is the only real slot guy that I think we have right now. Davis' best work was when he replaced AJ as the #1 guy--he's more burner than he is elusive. His game has not really translated all that well to the slot. Jones could play the slot, but he has much to learn before he's effective at it. Still, he looks more like an outside receiver than a he does a mighty mite in the slot.

Yes I agree. Is it me or have we stoppd using Anderson as much as we were? The guy makes plays keep him on there.

Its scary that he is one TD away from matching Andre for the ream record for TD's in a season.

Andre has the record wit 8 in the 2007 season and Walter currently has 7!
