Matthew Stafford?

It looks like we have a great shot at a high draft pick.....haven't heard many talk about Stafford, but he looks like the real thing. What are your thoughts?

I think he is a legit top 10 QB. Top pick? Maybe.

The Texans are committed to Matty Schaub for 1 more year with an option after that. Drafting a Round 1 QB this year doesn't give off the impression that you are committed to Schaub.

My top Senior QB for now.

With that said, I wait a year to take my QB early. I play Matt for this last year and either pick up his option for 1 year or bring in a veteran to hold the job for one year. I refuse to throw a QB into the fire after our first debacle.

Stafford is not that good guys. He has a Top 10 draft pick at RB and two solid WRs (Green is the second coming of Randy Moss), and he is so inconsistent that it isn't even funny. Bradford should be the only QB taken in the 1st. Anybody else is a serious reach. In my opinion, Jimmy Clausen is the most NFL ready QB in college football. Colt McCoy is the most savvy. Bradford is the most accurate pocket passer. Stafford is without a doubt the most overrated.

You lose all credibility when you say that about Clausen. The kid has unbelievable tools, but he is nowhere close to being ready for the big time. 18 TD - 15 INT against a very weak schedule doesn't look so good.

How is Bradford less ready than Clausen?

How is Nate Davis not worthy of 1st round consideration?

Tebow and McCoy are the most overrated. Remember even VY was a good passer at UT.

Neither did I until the past few weeks. He was never considered a good NFL prospect and now I've seen him ranked as a 1st rounder.

I would consider 1st round ranking him too high. I haven't seen those anywhere.

McCoy is coming back for his senior season anyway. Tebow should do the same.

I can't blame McCoy. He'd take a huge pay cut by going to the NFL ;)

I'm not gonna pretend like that kinda stuff doesn't happen in college football, but I doubt the QB of a 2A high school team had to be persuaded in that way to go to any major university.

Now if we're talkin about Bob Stoops....

Clausen's numbers don't tell the full tell of his overall ability. He doesn't have enough talent around him. Notre Dame isn't exactly USC. I still believe he is the most NFL ready QB because of the system he runs and the coaching he is getting from Charlie Weis.

I didn't say that Bradford is less ready than Clausen. I do believe that Bradford, along with most top name QBs from the Big 12, will face a tough transition into the NFL because they are all system QBs. The only exclusion is Josh Freeman, who most scouts see as the best pro prospect in the conference. I don't know his numbers, but I'm pretty sure they're not too hot either. The difference is that he runs more of a pro style offense at Kansas State.

As far as Nate Davis, he's put up good numbers. But he'll fall into the same category with Graham Harrell and Tim Tebow as good college system QBs that are not seen as good pro QBs.

It always annoys me when people say college athletes should get paid, since the schools are getting rich off of them. The kids at UT are getting around $25,000 a year in tuition, dorms, stipends, and book money. Anyone struggling to pay tuition wouldn't dare call them slaves.

Amen.

Have you seen Golden Tate play? That kid is one of the most physically impressive WR's in the country. Sure, Notre Dame is not a very good team, but it isn't because they don't have talented players. They pull in top 10 recruiting classes every year. The truth is that Weis is an overrated coach who made millions by calling in plays for the best QB in the NFL.

You just said in the above paragraph that you think Clausen is more ready, so I took that to mean Bradford is less ready than Clausen. I don't know what else you could have meant. Bradford still takes a lot of snaps from under center and he knows how to check down to his TE. Just because they throw a lot doesn't mean he should qualify as a "system QB". The main reason scouts are in love with Freeman is because he has ideal size and a cannon arm.

As far as Nate Davis, he's put up good numbers. But he'll fall into the same category with Graham Harrell and Tim Tebow as good college system QBs that are not seen as good pro QBs.

Ball St runs a pro style offense. You should check them out. Nate Davis is the real deal.

He put up good numbers at UT. But most scouts never thought he would be a good passer in the NFL. Colt seems to be a much better prospect when it comes to passing. The only real question mark with Mccoy is his size, Which he's listed a 6'3 but he's probably closer to 6'2 or 6'1. But I agree with you on Tebow.

I bet there will be questions about his deep ball too.

You can tell he has the arm strength. He puts a lot of zip on the ball and it gets there quickly.

But Texas doesn't throw the ball downfield often at all.

Yeah, we'll see how he does at the combine(if he does the drills) after his senior year, but I don't think his arm strength will be an issue. I'm curious to see his 40 time. During the Oklahoma game one of the commentators said he ran in the 4.5s, not sure if it's true though.

In my mock, I had the Texans taking Rhett Bomar in the 4th. I think that Bomar would do well to sit and learn behind Schaub for a year or so. Then if Schaub does well we can pick up the option and keep him and let Bomar learn some more. If Schaub ends up doing fine, then we can get at least a decent backup and get rid of Sage.

To many QBs are thrown in too early. Its far better to let them sit and learn then let them get pummeled into submission.

See, I am all for the Texans taking a quarterback this year, regardless of where in the draft, and let him sit for a year and learn. In fact, my ideal spot would be the second round because we haven't taken a second rounder in two years, so what's one more year of throwing a second-rounder at QBs. Waiting another year (2010 draft) means the Texans are taking a quarterback they need to play pronto. And while we're not there yet, we're inching closer to it.

LZ said some scouts compared him to Jeff Garcia.

As much as I hate to say it, he'd be a good fit for our offense. If we were to wait until next season I wouldn't mind adding him and seeing what he could do as a game manager type QB with a good running game.

Of course, in the mean time we'd need to beef up that running game and defense.

Who knows, maybe this Alex Brink kid is the real deal.

Brink did have a really good college career.

But it was in an era of Pac 10 football that featured even less defense than usual.

He should get a shot just like everyone else, but I wouldn't keep my hopes up.

From what I saw of Brink in pre-season he looked pretty good .... His play-action fakes were top notch , very deceptive. (Much better than Schaub or Rosencoptor). I'd like to see what he can do against some real NFL players at some point this season .... maybe Rosencoptor throws 3 int's in his first 3 attempts one week and Kubiak gets fed up (Highly doubtful considering he still has Dick Smith on the payroll) .... or maybe he tries to go Rosencoptor again and sits out with a headache ....

I think Rhett Bomar would be a good pick for the Texans, but I'm just not sure at this time if he will be available in the 4th Round. It is a long time until the draft and he may have a good outing in a Senior Bowl, a Pro Day, or at the Combine, and see his stock increase dramatically. Remember, he didn't leave Oklahoma because of a lack of talent. He left because he got caught in an NCAA violation that probably happens routinely around major college football programs.

Draft countdown has him ranked #1 although he's not in the first round of their mock. It is of note that the rankings do not account for underclassmen with Stafford a Jr and Bradford a redshirt Soph listed in the top three picks.

The one thing that scares me about Bomar is his size 6'2" - 220.

He looks a lot bigger in person.

I met him in one of my classes two years ago and he has the frame of an NFL LB. 6-2 isn't ideal height, but I don't think it is a negative.

He can make all the throws, has good mobility, and has incredible stats despite having only one other good player on his offense at Sam.

Random fact:

I used to date Rhett's cousin and though I never met him I'll say that being an asshat is a family trait.:gun:

USC's Sanchez has the most raw skills for the NFL but I hope he stays an extra year. My Trojans need a BCS Title next year:whip:

Since Weis has taken over as offensive coordinator:

Notre Dame got 4.8 yards per play against Navy and won in spite of Clausen and Weis trying their hardest to lose the game. Navy was the #71 defense.

Syracuse is the #104 defense in the country and Notre Dame is getting only 5 yards per play in the first half. They look lucky to even be winning this one right now.

I'm watching the Ole Miss-LSU game and I have to mute it.

Gary Danielson is the worst commentator in college football.

Clausen is teh suck .... I hope the Texans have absolutely zero intention of even considering him ever being on their roster.

Clausen's not terrible.

Weis is the suck. Most overrated college coach ever?

It's definately beginning to look that way.

Seeing that my favorite college team has reached new levels of suckitude and my favorite pro team is doing the same I decided I would find another team to pull for, just for the rest of the season.

I chose the TT Red Raiders. Sorry Tech fans...the cuppacoffee curse struck again.

I am beginning to believe that I was the reason for the Oilers failures all those years.

I think I will now pull for the Inbreds......krap.....I just can't force myself to do it. Maybe if they reach the playoffs.

Whaaaaaat?

Jimmy Clausen and Josh Freeman? There are like 10 quarterbacks that I would like to see us draft before either of these two quarterbacks.

I agree with you about Harrell, and Tebow being system QBs but I can't say the same about McCoy, Bradford, or Nate Davis.

Nate Davis a system QB? Where does that come from? I can't see how anyone could get that idea.

Maybe he doesn't watch Ball St so he assumes that they must run some sort of spread to be successful.....I don't know.

They run a pro-style offense and he is pretty damn good at it.

I've watched Ball St. play this year twice. He has a great arm. A hose. But the thing a lot of these QBs that you guys are rating so high right now don't have is footwork necessary to succeed in the NFL. Davis gets away with a lot of the throws he makes because he has a strong arm. And Ball State runs the same spread offense that most college teams run. No different.

And you guys can underrate Clausen all you want. But I am willing to bet that he will do better earlier in his NFL career than Bradford of McCoy or Davis will just because he runs a true pro-style offense, ala Matt Ryan. It's no mistake that he's as good as he is right now. He ran a pro-style in college and the transition to the NFL was a lot more smoother for him.

I'll take that bet. I say Nate Davis will be a better pro early, and for the long run also.

I'm not debating that Clausen has skills. You said you thought he was the most NFL ready QB. I say that's BS.

I don't care what kind of offense he runs if he plays like **** against real competition.

ND has played three good defense this season (MSU, NC, BC). Clausen has 3 TDs and 8 INTs in those games. He's not NFL ready yet.

Only time will tell brutha. We'll see...

On another note, did any of you check out Peria Jerry against LSU? He looked like a young Warren Sapp. He's played great like that all season too. He killed the Alabama and Arkansas o-lineman. Man, would he look good in a Texans uniform, but he'll probably go in the 1st round and I don't think the FO takes another DT in the 1st this year.

Hardy and Jerry lived in the LSU backfield that whole game.

I think one of them could be had early in the second round. Don't know which it will be though.

I think it will be Hardy because of his health concerns and his motor. The number one knock on him is that he doesn't always play hard which is the worst thing a prospective team can think about you. Jerry is a 1st rounder imo. If he's there in the 2nd round, the Texans should do whatever they can to get him.

He looked pretty impressive against LSU, though I have to admit it's the first Ole Miss game I've seen since they had Patrick Willis

I watched the whole game against LSU and Alabama and saw a good bit of the Arkansas and Florida games. Peria Jerry was a force in every one of those games. Best DT in the SEC, even better than Cody.
