Alright im only fair to middling in my knowledge of the comp pick process so hoping somebody more knowledgeable will clarify this:
we've lost our 3 main FA's who all got good deals elsewhere and figure to see plenty of PT with their new teams next year. Although none of these guys are going to net us a 3rd like mario will, am i right in currently expecting three 4th/5th rounders back for them next year? Also it also seems likely we'll sign ed reed which will most likely cause us to lose one of those picks (plus we'll prob sign at least one extra vet FA to replace barwin/cody which may or may not cause us to lose another pick) and we still have to see what kind of deals, if any, teams sign mccain, dobbins, ball (lol jags) to thanks in advance for any replies |

I got this from another post on another message board
...The salary cap is same as 2009. In 2009: 3rd round comp players had signed for at least $6.5 million per season 4th rounders signed for $4.8 million to $6 million 5th rounders signed for $4 million to $5 million 6th rounders signed for $2.7 million to $3.9 million 7th rounders signed for less than $2.65 million per season.

We are almost assured of collecting 4 picks... ranging between round 4 and 7. It appears we will lose a dozen qualifying free agents and it is highly unlikely we sign more than 8. You are right that all three so far would garner a 4th or a 5th, most likely and Reed would wipe one away. Here are others to watch for:
McCain A.Ball Dobbins B.James Forsett S.Cody R.Butler R.Harris Routt M.Alexander Graham Donnie Jones Demps We want to end up -4 or more losing/signing free agents. And, we want ours to be signed away for more than we sign to come here. At this moment, we are at -3.

why not? He was signed last season and reached the end of his contract and became a free agent. It will depend upon how much he is signed away for.

what matters is that he ended his contract with us. Then, the factors include how much money he signed to play with the new team and his playing time, as well as his productivity for the upcoming season.

QUOTE=Dutchrudder;2137201]Last year the comp pick AAV ranges were:
3 - $6.5/$7 million and greater 4 - $5 to $6.5/$7 million 5 - $4 to $5 million 6 - $2.5/2.75 to $4 million 7 - $1 to $2.5/2.75 million Glover got 4.7 a AAV Barwin got 6 AAV Casey got 4.833 AAV Ball got ? Forsett got ? If we don't sign anyone of note, we should get a pair of 5ths and a 4th in compensation. Probably a 7th for Ball or Forsett. I imagine they didn't sign for much. It's better than nothing ![]() And before anyone asks, Kevin Walter doesn't qualify for comp picks because he was cut, so it doesn't matter what he signs for elsewhere.[/quote] This is some good information for this thread I count it as a creditable source

The 4th comp pick is not guaranteed.
I believe last year, only 2 teams were awarded with a 4th pick. You have to compete with other teams to get it. |

There is not "competition" for the comp picks. Not very many teams have the gap of four qualified palyers leaving to four qualified players signed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationa...dure_and_rules

But who knows, there might be a few teams that gut itself to build for the long term. Let's say the Eagles and the Ravens decide to save their cap to roll over next year, they would be "competing" with the Texans for the 4th comp picks. |

He provided a wiki link with a pretty good explanation.

OK, so we know the NFL award a maximum 32 comp picks each year.
For the sake of simplicity, let's say there are 14 teams that somehow lose 2 more qualifying players than they sign. And let's say they are all at higher level of losses such that those 14 teams are awarded 28 comp picks total. There are 4 possible comp picks left. The Texans lose 4, sign 1 The Jets lose 4, sign 1 The Eagles lose 4, sign 1 How many comp picks do each of these 3 teams get? There's a complex formula with different criteria which we don't know for sure which is more prevalent. The Texans may have a bigger burden financially with the contracts originally. But the Jets have a couple of players injured and didn't play much. Same thing with the Eagles. The Texans have all those players start all 16 games. Who gets how many comp picks? I know I stretch it, but in theory, there's no guarantee at first sight. |

And then there's a matter of this:
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...s-to-15-teams/ Looks like the Rams and the Colts each got a comp pick last year because they sucked and "not based on the formula". |
