Default Banks re-signs

Good news to hear.

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans announced today that they have re-signed free agent QB Tony Banks and signed unrestricted free agent LB Frank Chamberlin.

The Houston Texans announced today that they have re-signed free agent QB Tony Banks and signed unrestricted free agent LB Frank Chamberlin.
Banks (6-4, 230) enters his fourth season with the Texans. Last season, the ten-year veteran, appeared in five games completing one of two passes for 16 yards.

Banks, the team’s backup quarterback, played in seven games in 2003, starting three when starter David Carr was hampered by injury. Banks finished 2-1 as a starter, completing 63 of 102 passes for 693 yards.

Chamberlin (6-1, 238) has spent the past two seasons with the Cincinnati Benagls. The five-year veteran was originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the 2001 draft. The former Boston College Eagle was placed on the Reserve/Injured list with a torn bicep he suffered in the 2004 preseason.

Known for his special teams contributions, Chamberlin has totaled 38 career special team stops, while appearing in 48 games. On defense, he has 44 career tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery.

I was glad to read that on the main page of houstontexans.com. I'm glad Banks is back, the Texans are in great shape at QB with Carr and Banks.

Glad to have him back... just hope he's cool with returning to his role considering there was discussion (I thought) that he wanted to go be a starter. Guess with the other QB's jumping around... not much room out there.

Teams with QB situations basically did not offer him the opportunity. I did not see anyone actually bring in him on the other boards or rumor sites that I go to .

The NFL Europe season is over before training camp starts. Basically it means the players miss the spring mini-camps and off-season fitness program. This is why you don't see the Texans sending rookies, particularly 1st day rookies, over there, because they would rather have them learning the Texans' system and in the Texans' fitness program. Ragone and Symmons have been through that so now they have been sent for experience.

Banks is functional and does not cost overly much. We have Carr who is tough as nails so we need a QB that can just hold the fort till he gets back. Lord forbid something happening to CArr.

due to Testaverde's age and tenure his base salary is higher than a Banks. So we do not need to spend for someone who can lose a game for us anyway. We just need a brace for the damn not the whole damn ya know.

The difference is $100k but that is really irrelevant since Banks signed about twice the minimum salary.

IMO, Banks is a very good signing for us. Reasonably solid vet who allready knows the system. Rags is in Europe getting some close to NFL game experience, so I think we are in pretty darn good shape at QB. If we had that type of tallent and backups at all positions we would be "In tall Cotton" as the saying goes.

Nice old saying edo. Yes we would be in great shape. Except I would hope they werent all older veterans, but skill level. that would be a nice luxury for us.

I am going to pretend like you did not say trade D. Carr. But yes Ragone is a restriceted Free which would let us get a draft pick or trade the sucker if he has a good NFLE season and shows some promise. Why not do the damn thing...

Dave Ragone signed a 4 year contract so 2 years remain and he will go directly past RFA to UFA.

Default Thank God for Tony!!!

It seems that everytime I find my way to this site, I see the talk is about what Ragone is doing??? Well I'm just glad that we have a quarterback like Tony Banks waiting in the Shadows to backup David!!! He has been around the league for many years and has had his ups and downs, but he has always did a great job for us when called upon

Nothing against Ragone, but I've never really cared for the guy and I don't think he will ever be a starter in this league. I do though think at some point that we could get a nice 3rd or 4th round pick for him though. In my opinion your number 2 quarterback should not be a young guy but have some experiance and records to prove it!

Yeah, it really sucked for the Rams when they had an inexperienced Kurt Warner backing up Trent Green.

It also sucked to be the Patriots when Drew Bledsoe went down and they had to turn to young and inexperienced Tom Brady.

Both of those teams won the Super Bowl recently when their starting QB's went down.

Both of those backups entered the NFL with bigger question marks than Ragone.

Despite the tone of my last post, I am still happy that Banks resigned with the Texans. I thought all along that he would be back because he wasn't going to find a good chance at a starting position with another team. Banks has 3 years of experience with this team and its system, and has starting experience in the NFL.

I am anxious for training camp to see how Ragone and Symons have progressed. I expect Ragone will be invigorated by his experience in NFL Europe and will show why he was well-regarded coming out of college. Symons should be healthy and also a little more experienced after his stint in Europe. The competition for backup spots should be lively, but I see Banks emerging this year as the backup and Ragone as the third stringer. Hopefully Symons will be eligible for a spot on the practice squad, but if he shows well in training camp he might be claimed off waivers by another team. If all three backups are back for the 2006 season, the competition will be fierce to stay on the team.
