It's not two second rounders. It's a 2013 second and a 2014 conditional mid-round pick. I agree that it is an overpay. But Smith has been really good the past two years and is still just 28 years old. Also, two second rounders for a qb who gives you several productive years with qb ratings of 87, 92.7, 98.6, 92, 96.8, and 90.7 is a trade I think many gm's would not take back. Schaub has been a good quarterback. People just love to **** all over the guy because he's not as good after the lisfranc injury.

The Chiefs probably could have got him for nothing had they waited .... SF may have just cut him.


SF with a lot of talent and a load of picks after a superbowl appearance .... could get significantly better.

Why would they have just cut him? And there had to be a few teams after him for them to get what they got.

This is now the fourth time the Chiefs have traded for a 49ers QB. The last three were Elvis Grbac, Steve Bono and Joe Montana. Each one of these guys led the Chiefs to win their division within a year of being traded. I wonder if Smith can keep up the trend.

This is mind boggling. Why overpay for a QB that isn't as good as your current QB?

I'm not an Alex Smith believer obviously. He could be successful if the Chiefs have a top 3 defense, and they simply ask him to hand the ball off and don't screw up.

I still don't understand this. Look at the stats & he's the same guy he's always been. Just so happens he took a dump at the end of the 2012 season where he normally works it in some time in the middle of the season where we normally have our three game slides.

The Niners didn't need to move Smith. This could backfire, if Kaepernick misses any significant time in 2013. And running QBs do have a tendency to get injured.

Let's not turn this into a Schaub thread. I do want to say that I don't go by stats alone. Schaub looked different at the end of the season. And I trust my eyes more than a stat sheet.

Drafted Todd Blackledge in that year. And last player that was drafted by the chiefs and started for them

I think that stats off by a little - but not much. Brodie Croyle was drafted by them in the third round of the '06 draft, and between '06 and '10 started 10 games. I do believe he's the only Chiefs draft choice to start a game at QB since Blackledge though.

The Chiefs have only drafted 5 QB's in the last 20 years, and Croyle was the only one they took higher than the 4th round.

Not sure what you're getting at, but, my opinion is that Andy Reid will make Smith a better QB than Cassel. Did they overpay? Probably, happens all the time in the NFL. It just seems Andy Reid sees something in ASmith that fits what he plans to do. JMO!

I also think the Niners made a big mistake, one that will come back to bite them in the posterior! Maybe they plan to pick up someone in FA, or someone who gets the boot, like Sanchez or Tebow. Who knows. Time will tell, but, I don't think the Niners will repeat the run they had in 2012. JMO also!!

Chiefs overpaid for Smith, I think had they waited longer they could've gotten a better deal for Alex. I see him more as a stop gap solution, they could've probably gotten a better long term project at 33.

I think for the Niners you risk gambling Kapernick misses time because well...it's going to be #33 on a team loaded with talent. I don't see how you don't make that trade if you're SF. It's not like Smith's skillset is irreplaceable. They can get a journeyman QB.

Really?? People think Cassel is a good QB? I didn't even think he was a good QB when the chiefs traded for him. I consider this a step up from a bad QB to at least a good QB.

I think the Chiefs made a great deal. Alex Smith is a good quarterback. He can make all the throws. He is athletic. He makes good decisions. He's healthy and young. There isn't anything not to like. He has not produced a great body of work. However, I think that is less a result of his ability and more his situation. In two years with a good coaching staff and team in place, he was a winner and effective. Teams can want an elite QB.. It doesn't mean they are available.

I except Smith to have a very good career. Not only is he a talented QB who has played well the past few seasons... Now he has a chip on his shoulder. Chiefs are now the team to beat in the West for the next 4 or 5 years. If Andy Reid isn't burned out, I expect Smith to rank among the top 10 QBs in the NFL yearly. If I were a Chief's fan, I would be overjoyed right now!

ummmm HUH? The 49ers have never said they were going to cut Smith. Why would they have cut him? He'd be a good backup who is not tremendously overpaid and good insurance for a running qb like Kaepernick who could get injured on any play he takes off on. The only reason they traded him is because there were multiple teams after him such as the chiefs, jags, and cardinals and they were able to turn him into a 2nd rounder plus change. Carr was a terrible qb who had worn out his welcome in Houston, was overpaid, and had minimal trade value even before Schaub came on board. Alex Smith does not equal David Carr.
