WR remains likely top pick for Texans

I'm still not buying that the Texans will take a wr in the 1st. They need a starter opposite Dre from day 1 this year and a rookie can't be counted on for that. Wr is one of the hardest positions to draft. They hit the lotto with Dre. Plus it usually takes 2-3 years for a wr to really hone their craft from college to the NFL. There are exceptions (Dre) but that isn't the norm. I'm guessing the Texans go defense once again.

Many of these guys are pushed into starting roles from day one.
It's not the old NFL anymore.

Aside from guys like AJ Green or Julio Jones, some other rookies have done pretty well, like Kendall Wright for example.

They need a guy that can be a legit starter after about 12 games in the league. We can get by in the reg season with an average guy, we know that but we need someone that will be ready towards the end of the year. I think we can win 12 games next year as we are but we won't be able to handle the NE type teams without more.targets

Actually I was just perusing through the draft history at receiver on Profootball Reference. There have been several late first round to third round picks that contribute significantly to their teams early in their first year as of late.

we used two draft picks last year on two wideouts posey and martin pus we have another young wr in lestar jean. All three never got enough passes to prove themselves due to the qb and head coach and now we are ready to burn another 1st round pick on a wide out when we have 3 young ones plus andre?

Yes the Texans did use 2 draft picks last year on WR's plus they have Jean, but that doesn't lessen the need to draft another WR, even in the 1st. With Posey's injury and cutting Walter, that gives them only AJ, Martin, and Jean to rely on next season. Neither Martin nor Jean have proven themselves IMO. We don't know the whole reason (though some think they do) why they didn't get thrown to as much. It could've been any number of things that prevented them from getting passed to. It could've been their route running, their blocking, or not getting separation. And yes, it could have even been Schaub or Kubiak's fault. But the fact is, the Texans need more WR's. If they get one in the 1st or 2nd doesn't matter as long as they take one. The more pro-ready the better. That's why I prefer someone like Hopkins, Allen, Woods, or Williams.

Look, I'm not saying the Texans will draft a WR in the 1st, but it is a need position, and if a WR is there at #27 they like and have rated higher than the other players available, then take him.

posey's out with injury and hasnt seen much game time since 2010, martin's a slot guy, and jean hasnt done squat. do you actually believe what you write or are you just trolling as the only person in america that doesnt think we need a wide receiver?

I know its not the old NFL anymore. Not even close. I've been watching and going to games since the sixties. It is still too much of a risk to count on a first round wr draft pick to come in and start from day 1. Yes it happens more frequently at every position in the NFL nowadays because of free agency and the salary cap. But it is still one of the hardest positions to evaluate and hit the jackpot on. I will say that the 2011 wr first round was awesome for wrs but thats not the norm.

The only guy that coup have helped us was Wallace and he was WAY out of our price range. The only way to fill this need is via the draft. We're not gonna stumble across a better option via UDFA. Any WR that is half decent and gets cut will probably be out of our financial range too.

Remember when we badly needed a LT? Brought everybody an their momma in. Didn't pan out. How did we solve it? Picking the best tackle on the board and going forward.

Over the last five years, there has been eleven receivers that were drafted lower than #27 and had better production than Kevin Walter (last year) in their rookie years (there might be more since I didn't really put pen to the paper.)

And then there were many many that had close to that production; some of them were due to the fact that they were the #2B or #3 receiver on their team.

If we have to fast-track one of those guys, he would have more targets and therefore more catches.

All we need to do is to make sure we find a guy who is already adept at running the whole route trees at a decent pace.

Posey, for example, if he had played more his last year in college, would have been more prepared ( and would have been drafted higher, but still after #27.)

There are several of those guys this year (and next year) like Dobson, Patton, Hopkins, Woods, etc.

They may never become a number #1 receiver, but their "chances" as a #2 receiver are almost assured.

I don't think Wallace would have fit the Texans anyway. I'm sure they will be snagging some camp and preseason cuts. But the Texans need as close to a sure thing to start opposite Dre as possible.

That draft was pretty loaded at LT and it is a HUGE risk going into a draft focusing entirely on 1 position of need for your 1st pick. All I'm saying here is 1st round. They may draft 2 wrs but I just don't see it being in the 1st. Only way is if the draft unfolds in such a way that when it is their pick the person highest on their board is a wr. I would rather see them trade back and get an extra pick if things don't fall their way. Outside of Patterson and Austin I don't see a 1st round stud. Maybe Hopkins.

Too many positions we could upgrade to be set on WR, especially since they cant focus this team on the passing game with Schaub at QB and expect to win it all. Strong run game, elite defense, and Matt not making mistakes is what it will take as long as he remains the Texans QB IMO.

Give me Rodgers/Swope/Dobson/Hunter in the 2nd over any other WR in the 1st. Besides Patterson, that guy has a chance if he improves his route running he has a chance to be a star. Patterson was a weapon despite only playing 1 yr of college ball.

BTW, Patterson is a very good blocking WR when he puts his mind to it.

DeVier Posey ruptured his Achilles tendon, probably won't even play until the middle of the season, if that. And if he does, his has one of the worst injuries to come back from, the same one DeMeco Ryans suffered. So let's count him out for now.

Keshawn Martin is a slot WR and a returner, don't see him becoming the #2 WR at all. He's only 5'10" and 190 lbs.

Lestar Jean hasn't shown anything in the first two seasons since he's been with the Texans, not to mention he was a UDFA. He's only had one big play since he's been here, but that's not enough to warrant to be the #2 WR to start the season.

Kevin Walter was cut earlier in the FA, so we don't have anyone to take over the #2 spot. So no, the Texans aren't crazy.
