NFL Fans on Facebook

The National Football League is one of the most popular sports in America with some incredibly devoted fans. At Facebook we have about 35 million account holders in the United States who have Liked a page for one of the 32 teams in the league, representing one of the most comprehensive samples of sports fanship ever collected. Put another way, more than 1 in 10 Americans have declared their support for an NFL team on Facebook.

Winning Fans Over

Are people fans of a team because of their friends, their hometown, or just because that team enjoys some success? It certainly looks like winning helps. We looked at how many users clicked "Like" for each team's page on each day throughout the season. On any given day during the season a team either doesn't play, loses, or wins (we'll ignore ties). Because playoff teams get so much more attention, we'll break out separate categories for games during the playoffs.

Lots more at the link, very interesting data. Basically, Cowboys and Steelers are the most common fans. If you are a Texans fan, you are mostly likely to have Cowboys, Saints, Steelers, Pats and Packers fans as friends on Facebook.

It's long been a dream of mankind to put together a map showing the geographic locations of NFL fanbases. The CommonCensus map tried to do it though polling; we took a crack at one based solely on proximity. But all previous efforts have been self-selecting or otherwise flawed. If only there was a massive database, with precise geographic information, of Americans identifying their favorite teams.

This is exactly that. Facebook's Data Science team has combed the more than 35 million users who have "liked" a team's fan page, and put it into graphic form, down to the county level. Sean Taylor, who headed the research and analysis, was kind enough to send along the high-resolution maps. Click the overall fandom map above to enlarge.

Cool map, sucks that they had to use so many different colors that some look the same. Is that middle piece in Alaska full of Houston, SF, KC, Atlanta, or Buffalo fans? lol

Tell me about it. One old friend of mine fan, a Cowboy fan and lifelong Houstonian no less, will not shut up about trashing the Texans, typical. He even saw the Texans in the Pro Bowl as fodder.

It's comical to read it these days for obvious reasons. He gets pummeled with facts everytime he opens his mouth.

Does anyone "Like" other teams like division rivals just to follow what they are doing? Personally I don't but just curious if anyone does that.
