Sean Horejs, of KRIStv.com, reports former college basketball player Corey Lamkin is hoping to catch on with an NFL team. At 6-5, 250 pounds, he should have the size to be an effective tight end. He has been working with Phil Pettey in Corpus Christi, Texas. Petty is a former New York Jets and New Orleans Saints assistant. He's trying to line Lamkin up for some private workouts with NFL scouts in the coming weeks.

who's to say we dont need a tight end lets bring him in and see what he can do.

who's to say we dont need a tight end lets bring him in and see what he can do.

The Texans already had a project basketball player (Rashard Kent). Let the coaches spend their time on this team and no more projects.

Was Antonio Gates considered a project?

I am starting wonder what some of these agents are telling these basketball players these days to get them interested in football again or all of a sudden?

Nothing wrong with projects, but there are plenty of ways of addressing the TE situation so as to have a guy in place two years down the line (the best case for this guy). If we think he's actually going to be a great player, then terrific, let's go out and get him. But to sign players who won't be NFL-ready for several years on the basis of current need is daft. We'd want a Gates even if we already had a Tony Gonzalez; we don't want to waste time on a no-hoper just because we have a hole there right now.

This story sounds like it's just a reporter doing the agent a favour, either because he knows him or because he's hoping for more worthwhile tips from him in the future.

If the season goes as predicted (9-7 or 10-6) you can look for the Texans to go LT with thier first pick in the next draft and TE with the second pick. Hopefully we won't have a shot at the top 15 players cuz we'd be further down on the draft board due to a winning record / playoff berth. If for some reason they pull off a 3-13 or 4-12 season, they could even look at WR with their 1st pick if they deem the season a failure due to not having a solidified #2 WR and try to move back into the late part of the 1st round (ala Babin) for a LT. Thus making TE stay on the back burner even longer. I'm making too many predictions though, let's just get this season going.
