This ^^^.

They think 2-14 is section 2, seat 14.

What I missed out on, in terms of being born in 1976, is the chance to have grown up with the Oilers from day 1. In a sense, that's a not a bad thing.

I am really stoked at the thought that when I'm 78, I can look back and say I was here when it began. I was a fan from the moment the team was born. I remember drafting David Carr, the first game win vs. Cowboys on national TV, the MW/RB/VY drama, the hiring of Kubiak, and hopefully the Super Bowl titleS.

Wasn't it Bradie James that forced that fumble?

Manning is right.

Texans still have a vocal percentage of fair weather fans. No 12th man mentality, no "family" connection with their team. I was lucky enough to talk to a pair of Oiler greats recently. Dan Pastorini reminded me that not only was the Astrodome full for the team's return, he said the entire roadside from the airport to the 'dome was lined with cheering fans. Earl said, "All those people showed up for us. All those people they, you, had our back, man. And we lost. You remember what that was? 34 to 5 we lost that game. And all those people came out for us. Two times. That was really something."

Too many "Philly fan" types today, imo, and not enough...

yep. My folks used to have Oilers season tickets before the Luv Ya Blue era. The Oilers stank during that period and they could not even give the tickets away.

Houston, like most cities, loves them some winners. All you have to do is look at the stands in cities with losing teams. NOBODY fills a stadium for a 2-14 team. NOBODY.

Didn't we use to have to worry about black-outs, too?

I seem to recall that.

Yep. We worried about black outs until the team left. I remember being concerned during the run & shoot years because I bled columbia blue but was too poor to afford tickets.

Texans fans are spoiled by all the sold out games. I guess our 'fairweather fans' ain't so bad after all. (These are also the same fans that buy jerseys for guys like Manning, but I guess he'll take their money without pause.)

No, they aren't bad at all; they support the team heavily now.
And to me, that's good.

But often, when you have money, your time is thin due to different obligations or pleasures.

Ever.

Instead, he goes the ill-advised "Hey all you fair weathered fans out there!..." route. Dumb.

I don't care because I know he's not talking to me. But still, it's just bad form. This is why teams don't like social media. Yeah, it's good in some forms, and other times it's a hindrance to brand growth and expansion.

He needs to get back to being a ball hawk and stop trying to act like Bernard Pollard. IMO. Go make some plays on passes, not just playing the run or the big hit on every pass play.

What's wrong with saying the truth? We've all thought and said it.

I'm so sick of the kinder gentler politically correct BS.

If "you" are walking out on "your" team after an ass whooping then guess what, "you" are a fair weather fan. Don't let the door hit ya where the Lord split ya.

We all survived 2-14 and we will survive this. No need to sugar coat it and give everyone a participation ribbon and orange slices.

Show me ANY NFL team who has that sort of support in this day and age.

What you're describing is/was a cultural thing. Back then, sports meant something more than what it means today. Guys were playing often times more for pride than for financial glory. The sports marketing machine was born in the 1980s, the era of gluttony in our society--of binging on cocaine and thinking nothing of it, cash grab however you could get it, TV able to really bring games to a large audience via the first satellite "cable" programming systems, etc.

Prior to that? Yeah, it was a community thing. You didn't have the Internet to sit at, at home, and enjoy sports any hour of the day you wanted. You had to go get in your car and drive somewhere and stand somewhere, or sit in a barber shop or a bar and talk sports with people. You didn't have ANY team news or a glimpse at the players unless you read that ONE article the local sports guy published in the paper leading up to each week's game. You watched the game on TV, and that was it. No 3-hour long highlight shows on TV. No message boards to come to and talk about sports and put it under a microscope like we do here today.

So yeah, of course fans would mob a team--even in a bad LOSS--it's al you had back then. It was more pure, more organic than it is now.

In fact I'm glad you brought this up because I was wanting to start a thread about this very thing: How we've ruined the pureness of sports, specifically football. Back in my dad's days, you simply watched a game on TV and you might have read your local newspaper's recap of that game. Each game was something unique and special. Now we've got people who can tell you if your team even has a shot or not, and to a large degree it's affecting even the team's players. The wealth of information we are armed with is, maybe, ruining football for us.

As a fan, this past week, I've wondered what it would be like to have all this "stuff" stripped away.

Ya know, I haven't actually seen a single word about these tweets other than in this thread, so this is all apparently making a mole-hill out of absolutely flat terrain.

Yes, and I recall Mattress Mac buying large blocks of Oiler tickets to prevent blackouts and you could get the tickets by donating a sack of food to the local food bank. The fans benefited and so did the poor who depended on the food banks to feed their families.

Can you imagine being able to secure a ticket to the Texans for sack of non-perishable food?
