Default Film Study - Texans at Titans week 13

A quick look at the pressure.

I only have the first half so far.
Enjoy!

10:17
Cody pushed the pocket; Locker had to take a hop step backward to avoid his Center while dumping off the ball to CJ for a 5 yd gain.

1-10 at 5:40
Mercilus beat his man around the edge (in the end zone).
He may or may not have get a piece of the ball as Locker threw the pass.
The pass was low and outside (probably out of bound), incompletion.
McCain was right on top of the receiver anyway.

Even if we don't credit it as a disruption; it was darn close, and the ball was out of there in a hurry.
Locker certainly didn't waste any time there in the end zone.

4:51 Incomplete pass, PD by Harris.
Almost an INT by McCain.
A lot of stunts going on here.
Antonio and Mercilus ended up pushing the pile really close toward the QB.
No time to spare on that throw, for sure.

2:34
1-10 Incomplete pass, PD by Harris again.
6-man blitz.
Merci and Barwin clamping hard on the edge.
Manning pushed the RB close to Locker.
Antonio swiped at the ball (unclear if he had a little piece of the ball or not).
Dobbins with a QB Hit on the delay blitz.

Next play, 2-10
Similar blitz with Manning quickly pushed the RB to Locker, forcing another hurried throw.
KJax almost with a pick (a good chance at scoring there.)

Next play 3-10
Antonio pushed his man into Locker (who might have been stepped on the front foot by his own man.)
Another (forced) quick short throw; this one was deflected by Quin.

...

:17 (still first quarter)
TE screen pass snuffed out by Mercilus;
He forced a hurried throw behind the TE, incompletion.

2nd qtr

13:21
With Barwin, Watt, and Merci collapsing the pocket from 3 sides, Locker had to dump the ball at the foot of the RB; Dobbins was right on top of him, a completion would have been for a loss.

13:47
3-12
Watt and Merci did enough (within 3 sec) to force Locker to go the TE (just 3 yards from LOS).
Dobbins broke up the pass.
If he was looking for the ball, he may have a pick six there.
Punt

...

11:49
1-10 Mitchell batted down a pass.

11:30 Locker completed a 19yd pass to Washington.
Antonio was pushing the pocket hard.
Ball arrived IN receiver's hands at the 2-sec mark.

....

8:42
Pass deflected by Cody, intercepted by Dobbins.

...

6:39 Locker sacked by Watt for -6
Locker saw Merci and stepped up in the pocket.
Crick then helped Watt get his sack.

6:02 Next play.
Smith sacked Locker; Barwin pushed the edge (no escape route).
Offsetting penalty nullified the sack, however.

3:18 Incompletion to Wright (Harris was called for 5-yd illegal contact.)
Merci beat his man; his hand almost got to the ball as Locker released it.

2:36 Watt credited with a QB Hit and hurry as Locker hurried an incompletion.
Rudd blew up the double team (a lineman and the RB).
If Locker decided to retreat, Barwin and/or Merci would have had a sack here.

2:31 Incompletion to Williams.
Titans rolled out their QB, but with Merci threatening, Locker threw the ball away.
(they did this a few times already to alleviate pressure;
they also used quick passes and screens for the same reason.)
I will make a note to try to remember to watch the All 22 when it comes out
to see how close Merci was to the QB.

:31
With Antonio taking on the double-team, Watt pushed his man right into Locker.
He was able to complete a quick pass for 7 yards to the TE Cook, however.
Watt was called for a hand in the face mask.

:22 Texans collapsed the pocket.
Locker tried to escape, but Merci quickly disengaged from his man to get the sack.

:16
With Antonio threatened to get into his face, Locker started to get happy-feet;
luckily he found the RB for 3 yards (pass was a little behind; good job by CJ).
The double-team held off Antonio, but Locker couldn't count on it, he just had to get rid of the ball quickly.

Interception by Quin.
Barwin beat his man to the inside; he got credited for a QB Hit;
Watt deflected the ball.

End Half.

In all, I counted 16 QB disruptions or close to QB disruption on 22 pass attempts.

Another QB disruption not recorded (and not counted as a pass attempt either) - hand in face mask by Watt.

There were also 3 plays that resulted in sacks.
Antonio's was called back due to the penalty.

Locker was only 8-22.

He also had to scramble a few times, at least twice.
They were not counted as pass attempts nor QB disruption, but they should.

Those are really crazy numbers, especially considering that at least 5 completions were screen or really quick passes/dump offs that gave the pass rush no chance.

The longest passes in the half:

11:50 a 25yd pass to the TE.
This was the only one pass that Locker had a lot of time due to the PA and his rolling right toward Merci's side.
The pass was out in just over 3 secs.
Merci was the only one seeing one-on-one.
He read run first, and was looking to chase behind the LOS when he was met by the TE motioning from the other side.
He was going one way when Locker was going the other.
Here, the scheme prevented a better pass rush.
Manning was looking for an INT, but he overran the play just a hair and had to reach back.
Cook basically took the ball out of Manning's hands.

11:57 in the second.
A 5yd catch and run that turned into a 26-yd gain.
The ball was out of there in just over 1 sec.
The ball was in the receiver's hand right at 2 sec.

11:30 in the second.
A 19 yd catch with roughly the same timing.
At the 2-sec mark, the ball had traveled at least the same distance as the previous one mentioned.

7:15 in the second.
A screen pass 3-4 yards behind the LOS that turned into a 13 yd gain.

It is really difficult to hold the ball too long in the pocket with the Texans D.

I'm questioning myself about what I saw. The reviews I've read of the game, some of the discussions we've had here.

I can't wait to watch it again. From a defensive standpoint, it feels like we dominated. If our offense would have been half as good as we like to think they are in the second half, it would have been a blow out.

Our offense sucked ball in the second half. All they can do is trade time with them. The FG scoring "drive" was set up by a FF by Smith; Merci recovered at their 36. We gained a massive 4 yards before Graham made that 50yd FG.

When you just watch the game, you only notice Texans' D is doing well but, when you break it down like this, you realize how dominating Texans' D actually were. Thanks for your film study 76! Must took awhile to do this. Now, get some sleep you deserve it.

Go Texans!!!

I can watch football all day (well, maybe 14 hours), 365 days a year, LOL!

Yeah; I didn't even realize how dominating we've been.

Like the Falcons sacked Drew Bree's a couple times, and he threw 5 interceptions, but he had more than 3 secs a good majority of the time in the pocket. He had at least 3 seconds on each of those INTs.

Compare that game with the Texans/Lions game is like night and day.
Stafford had to get the ball out on the average at least a full second sooner.

He even threw the ball in less than one second a couple of time.

Damn man!!! Don't lose your lady/s by watching too much football. While you counting QB secs to throw football, you may lose other opportunity!

Seriously, thanks for your hard work.
