Ok so as many of you may be aware I've followed the Texans for about 8 years now and have gradually built up my knowledge of the game to the point where I'm confident enough to state my opinion (whether that be right or wrong) and contribute to the discussion on the forum, having been a pretty quiet lurker up until a couple of years back for the most part.
Anyway, over that time my soccer team have been liquidated, reformed and dropped to the depths of regional non-league over here, and whilst I'll never give up on my team, the long-standing farce that the club became did sap a lot of my will to be bothered with them over the years and the Texans have gradually taken over to the point where I consider NFL to be my #1 sport. This brings me to the point where I'm looking to get into College ball, having never really watched any at all I'm looking to pick a team and stick with them. Obviously the long road following the Texans to where we are today was painful so I'm looking to pick a team that will at least be moderately successful from the outset because I can't go through that again or I'll be dead by 40 ![]() So with that in mind, I'm considering taking up the Longhorns as my college team, they are close to H-town for when I finally get around to making my first trip and seem to be fairly close to success. Any comments would be appreciated. I'll look to get the rest of their games this season via stream and see how they treat me. I've got a feeling this is going to seriously eat into my social life though

You are gonna start a serious war on here. But since you asked, why don't you pick the team that has the most exciting conference, up and coming coach and player - go Aggies.

I would recommend trying to squeeze in a trip to Dallas for the Red River Shootout if you are going with the Horns. One of the iconic college experiences.

LONGHORNS BABY!!!!
Just watch a handful of games of various conferences and see who you end up pulling for? I think we can all agree you should like a Texas team

Longhorns, Aggies, and Cougars have the most followers in the Houston and vicinity.
Both the Orange Blood and Maroons have rich tradition. The Big 12 aren't all that so the Horns have a better chance to finish high. They also have big recruiting class year in and year out. The SEC is the premier league for a while now; it's much tougher for A&M to get to the Big Dance, but it will be a hell of a feast. The Aggies also do well in recruit and should do even better. UH will be moving to the Big East, a step up, but they are still the step child even though they are Houston true blood. If you like the underdog then take the Coogs. They also have the red uni same as the Texans. The Big 12 and the SEC rob us of our coaches. Art Briles took RG III with him to Baylor. Kevin Sumlin is taking the Aggies to promise land, I don't know which recruits went with him. The Coogs are similar to the Texans of 2010. If only they can recruit well enough on the defensive side, they could have made bigger wave in the Kolb's and Keenum's years. Would have gone to the BCS in 2011. Perhaps you can follow all 3 for a few years and then decide. Enjoy and best regards. |

Yeah why not go Lornhorns. Everyone loves a glory hunter.
![]() I don't know what the televising of games are like back home - but I presume you get the USC's, Texas's, ND's etc all the time. Supporting a Texas college team would certainly be easier being a TexanTalker. I'm going to keep my opinion college football alligence (Washington) out of this and say go for something trivial - like the most ridiculous field. You've got a choice of Boise, or Eastern Washington. ![]() VERSUS

Here's the thing about college football - any given game is exciting and fun. The pomp and circumstance coupled with school loyalty yields a really great game environment. So you watch the game and get all happy and excited, but then when the game is over, you realize a bunch of fat billionaires decide everything instead of the players on the field.
Something to think about. D2 and D3 football and all other college sports do not suffer from this issue.

I would say the Irish but since your Welsh, I guess there's a difference? JK...why not go for the team that is an underdog?
My parents never had the luxury of going to college but my dad roots for teams that remind him of the college football glory days (teams that are similar to the 1980s Hurricanes, 1990s Huskers, etc) whereas my mom will root for the underdog. If you like tradition and excellence then consider the Victors:

i find it sometimes difficult to watch college ball because i find my self constantly say "that wouldnt happen in the NFL".
I do watch college though because its american football and also to watch out for the next stars. I support ND but not a massive supporter, i also look at the results of the aggies and longhorns and hope they do well because they are texas teams and so many on this board follow them. I picked ND because of the tradition/history of the school. the colours and many of the rituals that they have i found really interesting. thats how i made my decision. |

Don't follow college football. If you do the Longhorns are the worst. They pay cops off to keep players out of trouble, they generally suck. One of the worst schools to root for. Their fans are among the worst too.
Sorry, but an honest opinion.

Other than UH, college ball for me is about teams I can't stand, UT, Notre Dame, USC, Florida St, Florida, Miami, Ohio St, and rooting for whoever is playing them. I do find myself mostly watching SEC football though. Alabama and LSU are my favs. Oregon has been a pretty exciting program to watch for awhile.
I don't know if I'd try to pick a team and stick with it. I think I'd just watch all you can and see if maybe something jumps out at you, and then go with that.

Root for the Texas A&M Aggies! Exciting team, and yes, I'm very biased
.Though to *really* get into college ball you have to get into the traditions and the histories... it's so much more colorful than the NFL, in my opinion. Not necessarily better or worse, just more colorful.

Btw... what's up with the Eastern Washington University field? I thought the only colored one that the NCAA grandfathered was the Boise State one.

Others I have watched but who imo are less consistant are Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Baylor (recently) and Arkansas. It has been a pleasure and an extreme help to get feedback from my 3 Amigos mock draft partners Beerlover and Rmartin65. We each have different teams & players from all over the country we exchange info on. We have been friends for years and we can critique, question and give heads up to each other on players we discover. There are few guys on this MB that I can say "What the heck are you talking about?" without pissing the guy off. We freely exchange opinions, gut feelings as well as facts & have no hurt feelings. Well, at least they still PM me. lol
