Colt McCoy traded to 49ers

A person familiar with the deal says the Cleveland Browns have traded quarterback Colt McCoy to San Francisco.

McCoy, who started 21 games for the Browns in three seasons, has been sent to the 49ers for a late-round draft pick, said the person who spoke Monday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the teams have not yet announced the trade.

McCoy became expendable last week when the Browns signed veteran backup Jason Campbell, who is expected to challenge Brandon Weeden for the starting job.

Its just sad what UT turns these guys into, especially when you consider they are pretty much the cream of the crop talent wise coming out of the state of texas. With the right coaching who knows what type of players they could be entering the league.

Sadly, I'm not surprised.

At first, I thought he was too short, but, someone pointed out that he was the same height as Drew Brees. (He's actually an inch taller!) So then, I thought, ok, cool, maybe he'll make it.

But, alas, the curse of Mack Brown and the "Austin Bubble" rears its head again. He's doesn't have the arm strength or durability of Drew Brees.

I like Colt. Nice dude. I want him to succeed. But, overall, I'm not surprised he's struggling. He wasn't prepared at UT.

UT alumni have got to let that great Rose Bowl victory over USC go, and move forward. Their football program is flailing.

Colt isnt Drew Brees. Colt is Colt. But shipping him off to Cleveland definitely put him behind the 8-ball.

Not sure what UT Alumni letting go of the 2005 National Championship has to do with anything. And Texas doesnt always get the "cream of the crop." Texas is highly competitive with LSU, aTm, Oklahoma and virtually every other school working the area.

Folks are acting like he was just cut. A really good team wanted him badly enough to trade for him.

I'd take McCoy here in a second. About the same arm as Schaub, but I think he'd be able to make more off schedule plays. I think McCoy would be a good back up here. Probably better and more reliable than what we currently have.

1) My reference to Drew had to do with the fact that I assumed that Colt struggled in the NFL because he was too short. Then, someone pointed out to me that he's not too short; he's taller than Drew. As you said, Colt is Colt he has a different skill set than Drew, regardless of height.

2) UT fans have been holding on to the 2005 National Championship. That's why they refuse to see that they need a new head coach. The thinking is, "Mack got us that great championship!" I've actually heard people say that more than once. It's document that NFL teams are starting to hesitate when drafting players from UT (unless it's a high-profile job like QB). The school needs a new head coach BAD, but, alumni won't see it. All they can think about is 2005.

3) Texas COULD get the "cream of the crop." And often does. The school has a national "brand" (for whatever it's worth) and can attract anyone. The problem is, once they recruit the top high school students, they don't really train them for life as a professional athlete (if that's what that student wants as a career).

In Colts defense he really did not have much support. Its my belief he was supposed to sit for a year or so behind Delhomme and learn the ropes. He got thrown to the wolves before he was ready with a horrible lack of supporting talent and lost confidence.

I'm glad he is getting another chance with a much more talented organization.

Maybe he'll be the holder for his BFF Phil Dawson.

I think this season is Mack Brown's last chance. If he doesn't win at least 10 games and a BCS berth (is there still a BCS?) then my guess is he's out. Texas A&M has a real shot at a national title this year, so UT boosters are probably a bit anxious to see Texas get back to dominating the state.

Being a good to great starting QB isnt easy. I guess USC is in the same boat as UT with "undprepared QB's stubling around" in the NFL with Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez, Matt Cassel. Expecting a UT "cream of the crop" athlete to be great in the NFL is ridiculous.

Nobody is saying that everything is great on the 40 acres. But assuming that Colt, who was a 3 star prospect coming to UT, is going to do great in the NFL with the amazing UT coaching is a bit much.

I think a couple of years here working with our coaches would do wonders for Colt McCoy's career and wouldn't at all have been opposed to seeing him come to Houston. I don't even like the Longhorns and I can see that the single worst thing about Colt McCoy coming into the NFL was that he was going to Cleveland. He's far from perfect but QB's who go to Cleveland right out of the draft are doomed. That place is like a QB graveyard.

I'm not saying they "always" get the cream of the crop, but lets be real, they attract and often land more than their fair share of these 4-5 star recruits...and UT doesn't do much to help them develop as better athletes beyond what they already were when they arrived on campus as freshman.

& yeah you're right, the same could be said for USC recently as well.

Thats all I need to know about your bias against UT. UT doesnt occasionally spin out good players? Ever heard of Jamaal Charles, Derrick Johnson, Earl Thomas, Henry Melton, Michael Griffin, Michael Huff, Jermichael Finley?

The story is about Colt's new opportunity. You couldnt help but use it as a chance to bash UT for not prepariing players enough. But if thats what floats your boat then have fun arguing that UT football is awful.

A lot of the guys above are/were at least Probowl guys. That's a pretty good list of actives, plus all the mid-level guys I didn't list. I doubt there are that many schools that are that far ahead of them, but feel free to go look around and find how they stack up against others.

Fair points. Those are all decent players. But, the truth is, Mack Brown isn't known for developing players. Even when he was at UNC, he has a rep as a outstanding recruiter, but so-so coach/developer.
