Texans host kicker tryouts

At their regular Tuesday tryout session at Methodist Training Center, the Texans worked out three kickers — Billy Cundiff, Olindo Mare and John Potter.

The Texans are happy with Shayne Graham and his 74 points, including 15-of-17 field goals. They bring in players by position every Tuesday, including veterans like Cundiff and Mare, who have played for multiple teams.

I'm happy with Graham and his FG tries. Unless he's injured, I'm sure this is for a kickoff specialist.

In 2011, Cundiff had 76 kickoffs and 44 of them went for touchbacks. Mare had 84 and 53 were touchbacks. In 2011 and 2012 combined, Graham has had 68 kickoffs with 12 touchbacks.

I honestly think Cundiff should be a kicker for someone in the league. He gets great distance on kickoffs and has a big leg on field goals. The risk with him is whether he's past his playoff blunder or not.

So you think since we had a return specialist earlier in the year we'll add a kickoff/Long distance field goal specialist?

I think after a great win Sunday night, the FO should've taken the player mandatory day off as well.

Did you miss his stint with the Redskins this year?

AGAIN..... I go back to what I said earlier.

That is maybe the FO should've taken this (Mandatory player off), if we're looking at kickers... Shayne Graham has kicked quite well AND we have Bullock on IR.....

Whatever.... We're 8-1 and we're talking kickers....

Bill, pretty sure they're just doing their due diligence. Nothing to get worked up over. Graham isn't going anywhere and no one has suggested that they want him to.

i'll say it. he's an average kicker with a weak leg who's bounced around the past couple of years. if we can find an upgrade, especially one to help with kickoffs, we should.

No Brother, you're mis-interpreting me. Graham is more than servicable. Bullock is the future... I truly believe the "kicking game" is fine within this organization.

It was joke, considering those things that FO should've taken a week off themselves,. Thats all.

What if they're looking for a kickoff specialist only? Graham has been fine on field goals, but his weak leg shows during kickoffs. And as bad as our coverage teams have been, I'd be fine cutting one of those guys and replacing him with somebody who can kick it out of the end zone.

I wouldn't mind bringing in someone like Cundiff for kickoffs and 50+ yard fg attempts. Is it worth a roster spot to get more touchbacks and maybe in a close game we can actually attempt a 50+ fg.

I'm all for Hartmann for kickoffs. I know Potter was used by Buffalo as a kickoff specialist as well but he wasn't effective at it after the preseason.

The problem with Hartmann is that he's got that 4 game suspension. The 4 game suspension doesn't start (to the best of my knowledge) until he's signed. That makes him almost unsignable. Who wants to sign a punter, put him on the roster, and him not play for 4 games.

I may be incorrect but I believe that his suspension was reduced to three games and then subsequently extended 8 additional games (11 total). I got this info from wikipedia. I am not sure if he is serving his suspension or if it begins after he is signed. Maybe someone can help...

I'm wondering if this "looksee" has anything to do with the fact that our kickoffs aren't getting boomed thru the endzone. I mean, were those squib kicks against Chicago on purpose or what?

then again, I don't think "big leg" when I hear the name Olindo Mare....

This is probably finalizing our speed dial call-up list in case something - God forbid - something happens to Graham.
