ReFo: Ravens @ Texans, Week 7
Michael Renner | 2012/10/23

Quote:
What a Difference a Week Makes

On Sunday Night Football, Chris Collinsworth highlighted the Green Bay Packers picking on Glover Quin. Against the Ravens he wouldn’t have been able to find any of those plays. Quin played a great all-around game resulting in a grade of +3.1, a week after grading out at -1.2. He batted down two passes and came away with an interception in a stellar performance. Quin surrendered just three completions on seven attempts aimed at his coverage, for 19 yards. The Texans needed some players to step up after last weekend and he was certainly one that did.

First-Rounder Comes Through

It was very curious this past spring when the Texans chose Whitney Mercilus with their first-round selection, just a year after selecting Brooks Reed in the early second round. It was even more so after Mercilus saw little action through six weeks and only registered one hurry in total. In only 16 snaps on Sunday though he looked every bit the first-round pick. Mercilus had a sack and four hurries to go along with the pass he knocked down that was intercepted by Quin. It was very limited action, but it may be enough to warrant more playing time considering the general ineffectiveness from starters Connor Barwin and Reed so far this season.

A Legitimate Threat

A big day from No. 2 wide receiver Kevin Walter means it’s all positive performances this week for the Texans. The Texans have struggled in looking for a deep threat outside of Andre Johnson this year. Tight end Owen Daniels has been their second-best receiver, but his lack of speed limits his big-play ability. That is why it was a sight for sore eyes to see Walter catch a 25-yard touchdown and also streak behind the defense for a 34-yard pass — he even got wide open behind Smith on a go route that was overthrown by QB Matt Schaub. If he can keep beating his man and getting open deep, good luck stopping this Texans’ offense.

Games Notes

- J.J. Watt now has 10 batted balls on the year. Since we started doing our thing in 2008, nobody has ever managed more than that in a season.
...
- Schaub completed 8 of 12 on balls aimed over 10 yards in the air, for 137 yards and two scores.

Game Ball

Texans fans must be sick of this by now, but J.J. Watt did it all again. There was no bigger play than Watts tipped pass that was returned for a touchdown by Jonathan Joseph. The Ravens only called 10 running plays all day and Watt was probably the biggest reason why.
Mercilus graded +2.7, Walter +2.6, Ben Jones +1.4, Caldwell +1.3 on the game.

Man I honestly did not think Ben Jones had that good of a day but I guess I'll have to re-watch. The all-22 footage should be great.

No. No, I'm not. He can keep it up every game for the next 15 years and I won't get sick of it.

EDIT:
Still wondering why none of the youngsters can take K.W.'s spot from him? It ain't just his blocking...

Jones is just inconsistent like most rookies, but he always do something well.

He's yet to show that he can beat out a healthy Caldwell, but I'm pleased with his progress.

We were going against Gnata and big fat Terrence Cody; let's not forget that.
(OK so Gnata was not 100% right either, but still.)

Just because some folks think Walter is no longer capable of getting open on the outside doesn't mean that it's true.

A guy can only catch balls that are thrown to him (that are somewhat catchable.)

I maintain that KW got himself open just the same last year, he just didn't get that many looks for multiple reasons.

Looking at OG weekly ratings, a very good game will be rated in the +4 area.

Evan Mathis was the top OG in 2011. He had zero negative game ratings and one over 4. Consistency is key.

Jones had a -5.4 in week 4. Caldwell had negative ratings in weeks 1,3,5,6.

I ain't worry.

I think it's good to have a certain kind of continuity in different areas.

That way we spread ourselves out in such a way that we're able to help provide all the good stuffs (or even not so good stuffs) about the team for those who might not have the time or the access.

As far as PFT is concerned, I have always raised concerned about how they grade players individually (back to the day when they were still non-premium, non-subscribed.)

They are guessing at the blocking schemes and the protection calls just like any one of us.

I look at those plays in question and make a notation to follow the coaches' comments; sometimes they do clarify a thing or two for us.

Teamwise, when you combine all the different angles that different websites approach stats, it gives a very good indication on how a team perform.

Imo, JJo would've picked that pass off whether it was tipped oo not. He just had to wait a little longer after he'd jumped the route.

I ain't bishin, just making an observation

We don't know for sure. That pass may very well be to the outside where JJo's best chance is a pass defended, not an INT.

Well, it's obvious we'll never know for sure. But imo, he would've picked it anyway from the replays I've seen.

Obviously, it was an INT!

We agree on that.
And it was one of the turning point in the game, too.

I'm good with it however you want to call it!
