Here was the choice for many in the first round
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/spo...0?OpenDocument Just a month after being named the team's starting right tackle by Martz, first-round draft pick Alex Barron was relegated to the second unit Friday. Barron apparently is overwhelmed with the complexities of the Rams' offense and the switch to right tackle (he played mainly on the left side in college). Blaine Saipaia got the snaps with the No. 1 offense in team drills at right tackle. "This is my decision," Martz said. "Alex hit a wall and went backwards here a few days ago. He just got overwhelmed. What happened with him is we only had a couple of tackles in the OTAs (organized team activity). He was taking every snap, and I think he just kind of got on overload there a little bit. |

There's lots of rookies who are second string right now who will start on opening day.

Longer-term concern would be the fact that he had to be demoted because the learning curve was too much. I would listen to an argument that he should not have handed the starting RT job in the first place.

if there was ever a head coach that deserved to be fired last year it was mike martz and for some reason he's still there...the man simply makes moves that i do not understand...i hope for barron's sake that this isn't a trend and that he quickly gets back into the starting line-up

Rams | Barron does not Report, Martz not Happy
Thu, 11 Aug 2005 16:08:08 -0700 The Associated Press reports St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz is upset over the fact that rookie OT Alex Barron was a no-show at practice Thursday, August 11, one day after signing a five-year contract. "I have no idea where he is or what he's doing or if he's coming in September or October or November, who knows?" Martz said. "I don't know what to expect. If the kid really wanted to be here, he'd be here. I'm upset with the whole thing." |

I see no problem in throwing Barron in with the 1st team at the LT from the get go. It's a measuring stick to guage him by. I'm sure the coaches were trying to see where he is at in his development rather than claiming him to be the lifelong starter for this team and saying he's a failure now. I mean now they can make adjustments based on what they are seeing. Just because he sits and learns for a bit does not make him a failure. Tons of NFL players don't start their first year, contrary to the notion that your draft picks have to start right away ...ala Capers thoughts with Carr and Babin etc...

once again Casserly has proven to make the best choice, Travis Johnson is fast becoming a monster on the D-Line while Barron rated above Johnson has disappear'ed

Hard to throw him in with the 1st team when he hasn't even shown up to camp.

I heard the morning guys on 610 AM say that Barron "Wilbanksed" the Texans at a dinner meeting during the combine. How badly do you really want to be a NFL player if you skip out on job interviews? That's the kind of stuff that doesn't come out until after the draft.
BTW, Barron is in camp now.

I gotta' give it to the texans. Good job not drafting this kid. I thought that it was somewhat of a mistake not to pick him, but I guess the texans saw something that I didn't (obviously
). I still believe that DJ should be a texan right now, but I won't get into that seeing all of these threads/posts about the situation...

of the Chiefs drafting DJ - that's how mcuh hype he's getting locally in KC. So your boy will warm many hearts elsewhere, just not those hearts in the heart of Texas (sorry about that pun). Anyway, what you've got to ask yourself(and its a big hypothetical), would the Texans have taken Ware or Merriman had they been on the Board when the Texans # came up. It's interesting, because these 2 guys (who were taken by the Cowboys & Bolts - both 3-4 teams), were DE in college whereas DJ was a pure LB. So maybe that gives us a pretty clue about how important a players established abilites to rush the passer and fight off the block from an OL play into the mix for a 3-4 team. But as we know, DJ was there for those 2 teams but they went elsewhere - but then maybe it wasn't the defensive scheme at all because many 4-3 teams passed on him well before the Cowboys, Bolts, & Texans did. Even in hindsight, we can only speculate. |
