Default ProFootballFocus focusing in on Prominent Team Position Groups

A few surprises in PFF's Top 5s, imo:

Scramble: Prominent Units
Site Admin | 2012/10/06

Position groups. Separate units on the practice field and in meeting rooms, but part of the whole that makes the team on Sundays. Youíll hear some being mentioned in off-hand comments as being the best in the league but itís not often that anyone really looks deeper into it. Addressing that, this weekís Scramble assignment was to search out and highlight some of this seasonís top units.

The members of our Scramble team were each asked to select a position group to focus on and then break it down, giving a loose Top 5 led by one team they could sift out above the others. Gordon, John, Trey, and Bryan brought back three defensive groups and one from the other side of the ball. Below youíll find their reviews of the current top dog in each as well as a handful of others that belong in the conversation.

A note: while we separate 3-4 and 4-3 defenders in our Premium Stats, this assignment didnít make that distinction and the position groups were considered against each other regardless of base alignment. The receiving corps section also took into account all receivers; tight ends and running backs included.

Good stuff in there. I would rank Atlanta as teh best receiving corp in the NFL. Roddy White is a steady superstar. Julio Jones has incredible weeks and Tony Gonzalez has found the fountain of youth

Yeah, I was surprised at their #1 pick.

I disagree with their assessment of our D line. We don't have a true NT because we're not a true 3-4. Our NT only has 1 gap. We're more of a 5-2. Even so, good to see that our team is getting recognition. Watt is a big reason our D line is where it is. I'm hoping we see more from Barwin and Antonio Smith in the next few weeks.

If barwin was playing even mediocre, the texans d-line would be talked about around the league. According to PFF rankings he is the leagues worst 3-4 OLB out of 28 players. He has a -10.3 ranking. The next worst guy is O'Brien Schofield (AZ) -6.9.

I disagree that Manning isn't a stand out player at safety. Maybe that's the homer in me but I feel like he at least deserved a mention when talking about defensive backs.
