I'm not surprised that he didn't have interest in the Bucs either, but if he truly wants to be a HC again, I hope he gets his shot.

Although, I'm not overly worried about Wade leaving us any time soon, I am wondering what's the plan after him? He's getting up there in age and who knows how long he wants to keep doing this. I wonder if the Texans are developing a protege to take over. Someone like a Vance Joseph who has done a great job of working with the secondary.

The coaching carousel in the NFL tends to go in trend from re-tread older HCs to younger up and coming. Right now for the most part it seems to be be in the younger trend.

To me Wade passing up the Bucs job and who they went with after is pretty telling to the state of that franchise. I'm just not a big fan of pulling HC out of college ranks.

I think at this point unless he wants to go to another bad situation like KC, he's going to have a harder sale with more successful places that might be up this next year like Dallas(obviously), SD, or Philly.

Starting to get pissed off about this. He needs to tell all reporters that questions about becoming a head coach again are off limits. He's the FREAKing defensive coordinator here and frankly, McNair should have built into his contract that Wade would decline to answer such questions at all times.

I don't really see the problem GP. Wade is doing an outstanding job here, and if he gets another gig it will suck to lose him, but all of us should "expect" that to happen. If you want to have a top DC or OC, you can't also expect them not to be in talks for other HC jobs. That's asking to have it both ways, and that simply isn't realistic. HC gigs are always going to go to the hot coordinators around the league or ex HC's that want back in that are still hot commodities like Cowher and Dungy. I don't see Wade as some guy that is campaigning him name out there or anything, but he is being truthful and honest about wanting another shot at bringing a team to glory. After all that is what he has worked his whole life for. He deserves that shot again if teams out there feel that he is the man to get their franchise there. I really hope that you or no one else will bash Wade Phillips if he does end up deciding to take another coaching gig for doing an outstanding job in Houston.

All we can do is hope that he continues to improve our defense little by little for as long as he is here. Whether he leaves or not is out of our hands and we have no control over that.

I shake my head at it. I really do. And the residue off it is that WE and our players have to deal with it. What players on our team talk the way this man talks? When was the last time Brian Cushing or any other player said "Yeah, I like it here...but I still dream of being with a SB team like the Giants or Patriots too."??????? They don't. No other Texans coach does this stuff, either, by the way.

Just when I get to the point of forgiving Wade for last year's transgression...he goes and pulls me back in with a new one. And it's identical to the last one. So I wonder about him. Great defensive mind, no doubt. Other areas? I dunno.

I don't really understand the bashing of Wade as HC either. I thought he did pretty well in Dallas. He was there for like only 4 years or 3.5 until he was fired for the guy they always wanted any way who is also failing pretty hard.

Wade came into Dallas and immediately had the best record in the NFC that season where they barely lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs to the SB winning Giants on the last play of the game by a typical Romo INT that lost the game. That was a great season for Wade and the Cowboys though. The very next season they failed pretty hard by losing the last game of the season and missing the playoffs after all of the distractions from HARD KNOCKS and TO tearing the team apart. Wade did not bring in TO though. He had to deal with the same problem that several teams did with TO and guys like Pac Man Jones and all these other misfits that Jerry Jones wanted on that team. That team had a ton of felons and problem players. The year after that Wade got them back into the playoffs where they won a game and went 11-5. The year after Wade got fired mid way into the season. Wade had two very good seasons and two average seasons where he was fired in the 2nd one.

Over all I'd say he did just fine, but had to work for a mad man in Jerry Jones who wanted to run things any way. Right now Jason Garrett is looking like the same OC that he should have always been instead of a HC and is doing much worse than Wade in my eyes.

I'll agree that Wade more suited to be a DC though. I think he is a better fit for that, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Wade being able to have success again as a HC. He did have some success and wasn't the perpetual fail that you described.

And in the meantime, everyone else in the Texans clubhouse is doing their jobs and they're not talking about playing or coaching for some future team or HC vacancy that doesn't exist yet. Only Wade continues to answer these questions, find himself in these media stories about becoming a HC again.

I have to remind myself that just because he is a genius with a 34 Defense doesn't mean he would be inherently smart with everything else that's thrown his way. I failed to fully realize that.

Here's to hoping that Bob and Rick and Gary are already making Plan B preparations for the new d-coord after this year. Wade will leave the first chance he gets, he's made that very clear on more than one occasion. Free country and all that jazz...

IIRC, Wade doesn't have an agent, and neither does Kubiak. And Wade can not stop the press from asking questions.

Who else on our team is even getting asked these questions? Behind Kubes, Son of Bum is the most high profile staff member we have. I would argue that most people outside of the Texans fan base are probably more familiar to the name Phillips. He is simply being honest and anyone with half a brain knows that a HC gig would be a strong temptation for ANYONE not already a HC. Also, if our players are so mentally weak that something like this will distract them, then they deserve to lose. Contenders are not that mentally fragile. Real men nut up. Besides, you talk about McNair making Phillips the highest DC like Phillips owes McNair or something. Phillips has already turned our piss poor, pathetic squad from 2010 into the most aggressive and possibly the most feared defenses in the span of less than 2 years. He has ALREADY earned his pay and more. The NFL is a business and it is HIS business to discuss or consider future HC gigs.

Wade would have gotten a DC job somewhere. Giving Wade a chance after he "fell on his face" would have been giving him a HC job. & he didn't "fall on his face" He got them Cowboys to the play-offs more times than not, if I remember right, & got them their only play-off win in the last decade.

Exactly. He's the only one on the staff deserving of a HC position. Even Dennison would be a surprise if he was offered a HC job.

If the defense keeps this up, I'd be surprised (happily surprised) to see Wade back with us next season.

They are not foolish enough to represent themselves with millions of dollars on the line. They have counsel, trust me.

As to your second point: Yes, Wade can decline to answer questions. Media can ask the question, Wade can decline to comment.

I wanted Wade Phillips to cement his legacy with Houston, not USE Houston as a stepping stone to a HC job that he'll just regret taking anyways.

Free country, and all that jazz, so he can do what he wants....but as a Texans fan it feels like he could do better by all of us than two straight years of Wade floating out the whole "Aww shucks, I like it here...but I could be a HC again...but oh how I really like it here..." stuff. He should just make the jump whenever he wants, I'm done.
