How long did that last? I haven't watched too many football games in Houston the last 12 years.

I don't think he ever came back...At least I haven't seen any of his advertisements with the Texans.

After many years of wearing the rose colored glasses and drinking the kool aid I started to become more and more skeptical. This along with watching this game for many decades I learned and became a lot smarter about the many aspects of this game.

I observed what worked and what didn't work. I have witnessed a ton of good decisions and even more BAD decisions. I have a good memory. This along with the fact that I owned my own business, made payroll, manged all the rules, regulations and million dollar budgets. This gave me a much better understanding of business and administration. So forgive me if today I don't follow or meet your fan expectations. I think I have earned the right. I have found that my skepticism is right much more often than going all in. I have also found that going all in on every decision the team makes, for me, can be an exercise in futility. It is now very hard for me to go all in when I know that reality is sending a completely different message.

So today when the team hires a coach, drafts/signs a player or makes a decision I don't agree with, the best I got is, Geez, I hope I am wrong.
It's not about "meeting my expectations". Don't be goofy about it.

It is about the DEFINITION of the concept of fanatic: "a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal"

And get over your own perception of self-importance as a fan.

Football is ENTERTAINMENT. Nothing more, nothing less. If you want to try to put more importance in your life over an endeavor that you have no control, input, influence, or whatever, be my guest.

I've been part of running a company for 35 years now, so your rant about running a business is pointless. My company is directly impacted by my actions.

My team, 'eh, not so much.

So go ahead and pout and whine because you perceive that you have "earned some phantom right" as a fan. Go ahead and abandon this franchise as a fan because you didn't get your way. I could not give a shit. I'll be here as a Texans fan, through thick and thin, and while I might not agree with every decision or even be enthusiastic about things, and I might even be extremely cynical, jaded, sarcastic, bitter, disappointed, and/or pessimistic about things sometimes, I still keep all of it in perspective THAT IT IS ONLY ENTERTAINMENT!!!

They play, I watch. I have no delusions about this arrangement. Perhaps you should indulge yourself with that reality check, as well.

Btw, I'm not advocating blindly optimistic koolaid drinking. Criticize all you want. That's what sports talk and this forum is all about. I'm far from a shiny, happy fan.

Just don't tell me that you can root against your team and be a fanatic for that team at the same time. That's just bullshit pretzel logic.

MSR.

I learned this when the Oilers left Houston, when the Astros were sent to the AL, when the Rockets and Astros decide to only show their games on cable tv.

We as fans have no say so whatsoever of what these billionaire owners decide to do. All I can do is watch when I get chance to and just like I do with movies, I turn off my brain so I can enjoy the product I'm watching.

Just for shts&giggles, let's say you're Rick Smith, GM of the Houston Texans. You have a job to do. You're working with Bill O'Brien, he's got final say of the 53 man roster.

Over the last three weeks he & his coaching staff have worked with you & your scouts tweaking your draft board. How many QBs are on your board? One? More than one?

Imagine that Blake Bortles is on that list, however, the Cleveland Browns offers you their 1.4, 1.26, next years 1st, Josh Gordon, & Barkevious Mingo for your #1 overall. Do you take it, or do you have to ask Bill O'Brien for his permission?

Check this out

Quote:
Smith has a lot of fond memories of his first seven drafts. In the first round on Thursday, there won't be hand-wringing in the team's war room like during the 2008 draft.

Offensive tackle Duane Brown of Virginia Tech wasn't projected as a first-round pick by many. Smith, who had the 18th overall pick, took a chance by trading down with Baltimore (26th overall) to acquire third- and sixth-round picks.

Coach Gary Kubiak, who desperately wanted Brown, almost blew a gasket. Seven offensive tackles were selected before the Texans got Brown.

"I think that was the most exciting time in our draft room," Smith said. "We needed a left tackle. We were pretty in tune with that draft and had a good idea there would be seven tackles taken. We were at 18. Five had been taken at that point.

"Baltimore wanted to come up and take (quarterback Joe) Flacco. We had our eye on Duane the entire time. We anticipated how they would fall, including Sam Baker to Atlanta at 21, so I made the move."

Carolina took offensive tackle Jeff Otah at 19 before the Falcons chose Baker at 21.

"There was some nervous energy in the room all the way from 19 to 25," Smith said. "Gary was so nervous that Duane was going to be gone that, at one point, he got up and went to the back of the room until we got on the clock."

San Diego picked one spot behind the Texans. Coach Norv Turner admitted later the Chargers also wanted Brown.

Smith has learned a lot about the draft since 2008.
Sheds a lot of light on the previous regime and I wouldn't be surprised if Smith still has the authority to do this.

And BOB would b!0tchslap you for even asking permission. You just do it with that kind of deal on the table.

I'm not sure I'll wear a Jacksonville jersey but if we pass on Manziel and he goes to Jacksonville, it will be very difficult for me to not laugh in the faces of a bunch of Texans fans and cheer when Manziel leads the Jags to trounce all over the Texans.
Color me surprised that the Aggies are starting to come out in full force just like the VY nut huggers did when they finally realized we weren't going to draft him.

You are so fanatical about Manziel that you cannot even handle other fans not liking him as much as you do.

I have no problem with that, btw. There is no rulebook for being a fan. You can cheer for whoever you want to. You are just clearly a bigger fan of Manziel than you are of the Texans.

If not, we'd be seeing loss after loss to Tennessee.

And for those calling me a Manzielot. I'll own it. Heck yeah, I'm a Johnny sunshine pumper. I will eat crow if I'm wrong, but in this case... I'm not. Texans will rue the day if they don't take Manziel.
And this is why your opinion on Manziel cannot be trusted. You are too emotionally invested to make a rational, logical decision about him.

And yeah, being a sports fanatic is a deep personal commitment like marriage. Don't get caught up in the metaphor. It's not a marriage, but the commitment and devotion is very similar.

Where are all those VY nut huggers and their bandwagon jerseys today? Buying Browns gear? What bunch of chumps.

Chronicle's Brian T Smith (in NY for draft) on 790AM said, kinda jokingly/kinda serious, that McClain was taken off covering Manziel & Smith was going to be on JFF now.

Also said Manziel has a group of "handlers" following him everywhere, putting him where he needs to be and pulling him off in some situations. Didn't see that with any other prospect.

Says Manziel is a natural in front of the cameras, works the crowds perfectly, very polished.

You obviously have not read all of my posts. I want to Texans to take Manziel. I think they should do it. But, I'll be satisfied with Clowney and Bridgewater, or Mack and Garrapolo. I think Manziel is the best pick.

Being a fan of a player doesn't jade my opinion on other players. I've seen Manziel's flaws. He has deficiencies. Do I think he is the best QB option available? Yes. Do I think there are others who could do a competent job? Yes.

I just believe -- watching the was Manziel operates -- that the Texans will regret not taking him. The other draft options are good options, and I will still support the Texans.

I will always root for Manziel to do well wherever he goes. If he is in Jacksonville and lights up the Texans with 500 yards passing and 5TDs -- he's done well. But, I hope the Texans win 38-35.

I just don't want him to come back to haunt the Texans. But, when he does, it will be hard not to say, "I told you so."

I agree with both of you. CND is a good poster on this board, that was until his burnt orange butt hurt starting coming out in him. I have NEVER in the history of my time on this board seen him go so overboard to bash a player.

He, and others like him, act as if their word on all things Johnny Manziel is a word from god. In their minds, there is ZERO possibility that Manziel becomes a success in the NFL, and that was the purpose of my post.

You are all misunderstanding the purpose of my post. My desire is not to root against the Texans. My desire is to rub it in the faces of other Texans fans the success that Johnny Manziel might have in the NFL BECAUSE they have been so arrogant in their analysis of his future prospects.

Do I want Johnny Manziel on the Texans? Yes. Do I think he is the perfect QB prospect? No. I have many times throughout this thread talked about the areas Johnny Manziel needs to improve. I've also done my homework. I have watched every single game he has ever played, have read dozens of analysts on their thoughts on Manziel, watched the breakdown Gruden did with Manziel, and saw his improvement in many key areas at his pro day.

Unlike the anti-Manziel crowd, I have at least done my homework. Those like CND are just butt-hurt TU fans that can't handle having an Aggie succeed in the NFL. So that was why I was saying I can now understand some of what went on in the minds of the VY lovers. Perhaps some of them didn't want to root for Tennessee so much as they wanted to shove it in the face of other butt hurt Aggies and VY haters that simply couldn't handle having a player from UT drafted #1 by their beloved franchise.

I honestly can't remember Cloak showing a pro UT bias. Maybe I'm off, could you point out where he did so?
