Manziel's bashers claim that all he ever did was chuck it up to M Evans who came down with it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv42QuJGOE4

Look how many great throws Manziel made. How many times he hit Evans in stride, how many times he put it where only Evans could go and get it. That is the mark of a franchise QB

Default Re: Manziel

I really like Manziel's upside. He reminds me of a Steve Young type. I think he is a quite capable and accurate passer. He can be electric on the next level. Saying all that I don't think you can take him 1.1 because of the injury concerns. He is going to take hits consistently. I don't think you can tell him to sit in the pocket because that would take away a lot of what makes him special. Obviously he'll have to dial it down some, but how much can you ask him to keep it safe?

With the injury concern its not so much the explosive major injuries, its the nagging repetitive ones. Over the last two college seasons he started to accumulate injuries as the season went on, which clearly affected his play in November. You could see how much better he played in the bowl games when he was given to heal. When you extrapolate over 16 games with larger bodies, it projects to a serious injury risk going forward. People will say he didn't miss any collegiate games which is 100% true, but it was clear his play was affected as the season went on, I think this is a preview of things to come. You can envision a guy who will miss a lot of practices and always be a game time decision from week to week especially in the 2nd half of the season. I don't think you can draft a guy like that 1.1.

Like I said I really like Manziel's game and think he has a high ceiling in terms of ability to take over games and make big plays. But I think his ability to stay on the field will significantly stunt his production and his career going forward.

Very good post. Great balanced perspective. You nailed it. High upside with Manziel, but certainly some things to consider. All the off field stuff is just media bs that we only heard about because of Twitter and Internet news. If this were even 10 years ago, we wouldn't know about half of Manziel's off the field "concerns". If it isn't affecting him during the season (and in two college seasons there hasn't even been a hint of a problem), then it's a non-issue.

But the injury concerns are definitely valid. That said, look at a guy like Tom Brady. I couldn't help but think of him when you mentioned missing a lot of practice and being a game time decision constantly. That has been Brady his whole career. I for one will side more with the side that says Manziel did not miss a single college game in his career. But your point does have merit.

Johnny Manziel won't throw at Ags pro day march 5. He will throw on March 27 at A&M.

Non-story and not unusual whatsoever...but knowing TT this will be a 10 page discussion on the underlying meaning of Manziel not throwing at A&M pro day.

If this is not unusual, can you let us know of other recent QBs who haven't thrown at their own school's pro day.

Just curious.

Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel will not throw at the school's March 5 pro day, instead he will have a personal throwing day on campus on March 27.
This is not a unique situation, as many quarterback prospects have done, and will likely continue to do, the same thing. Manziel likely wants to take more time to plan his passing tree and become comfortable with it. Manziel has not said if he will throw at the NFL Combine.
Quote:
Plenty of top quarterback prospects opt to have a personal throwing day in order to showcase their skills instead of participating in the team’s pro day
Quote:
What 'Johnny Football' is doing isn't anything too out of the ordinary however.

A lot of quarterbacks choose not to throw in front of the scouts at their pro day or the combine.
It would be a totally different story if Manziel announced he wouldn't be throwing at a pro day at all...instead he is just opting to have his pro day at a different day for whatever reasons. Maybe he doesn't want to take attention away from his other 1st round prospect teammates Mike Evan and Jake Matthews (or vice versa)? Maybe George Whitfield has a scheduling problem, because he will undoubtedly be present with Manziel for his pro day just like he was with Andrew Luck?

If you recall, RG3 changed his pro day too because it conflicted with Andrew Lucks back in March 2012.

Again, it is a non issue but since it is Manziel the speculation will run wild with things such as "Well maybe him and Drake are planning on getting drunk that day so he changed it"

For some it might be like that, for me I am just intrigued about the thought process behind decisions and how that may give some insight into how he rolls.

Did you happen to notice how much he ran at A&M? I'm talking about designed runs not the freelance stuff. That's a lot of extra punishment he won't be exposed to.

He's very smart and coachable. I'm not worried about him taking unnecessary hits. He'll learn to slide and throw the ball away. Remember he's only a redshirt sophomore.

I see this as no different that QBs who don't throw at the combine. Recent ones include Luck, RG3, Gabbert, Tannehill...the list is pretty long.

A cusrsory glance at QBs who have resheduled Pro Days recently includes: RG3, Bradford & Tannehill. None were injury-related. There were several non-QBs as well.

Default Manziel

I think the most important part of the combine when it comes to Manziel is going to be his measurements. Not necessarily height, but how large are his joints, hands, feet, bone structure etc. My largest concern with him as I have stated before, is durability over time. We know he is not all that tall, but how wide and thick his structure is will make a big difference.

Overall

One of the most polarizing prospects in recent memory, Johnny Manziel will generate headlines wherever he lands at the next level. His most ardent supporters believe that he will take the NFL by storm, much like he did college football’s Southeastern Conference the past two seasons. Many, on the other hand, believe his reckless nature both on and off the field make him a less than ideal candidate to be an NFL franchise quarterback. While he will never be a 6-foot 4-inch pocket passer, Manziel’s rare mobility and knack for making plays forces defenses to cover the entire field. The upside to drafting him seems remarkable, but I imagine several general managers and coaches would not touch him with a ten-foot pole. Whether or not he lands in a favorable situation, it should be an exciting journey for him and the fans of his team.

Draft Projection: Top 10

The off the field stuff is complete BS, its sad they actually highlight that as if it will be a major factor. The real question are how will he transition in a pro offense ?, Can his body hold up?, Will he be elusive enough on the next level?
