I think it is pretty dumb to try and come up with a nickname for the stadium. How many stadiums in the NFL have a nickname? What everyone should be doing is trying to make Reliant Stadium an intimidating place to play so everyone feels the same about the name "Reliant Stadium" as they do (or did) "Lambeau Field" or "Mile High Stadium" or "Three Rivers Stadium" or "Texas Stadium", etc. So far we have done a pretty good job of being loud, but the Texans have been one of the worst home teams in the NFL. Once the Texans start winning at home, there will be no need to come up with a nickname for the stadium. Reliant Stadium will be good enough. |

I agree, the nickname will come in time. I just threw out "The Bull Ring" in an earlier post because when I was in school, and two guys were about to fight, one would usually say "step into the bull ring." That was also the name of one of the football drills we ran during practice. I couldn't care less what the nickname is, I just want teams to hate coming here to play, between the noise and getting their a**es kicked.

I think the point of the nickname was to have some fun. I really don't think we will be setting the tone of the media here but we could possibly provide some food for thought. How about for a bit of retro Houston:

I LIKE IT!!! Honestly though. I know that the nickname will come in time. This is just a topic to get us off the mundane chit chat of the happenings of the neverending offseason. Some of the names i've heard have been horrible and some have been good, but honestly, none will probablly be heard of by the time a true nickname is in place. This was just a topic I started to pass the time... and it seemed to have worked so far... 86 posts and counting.... |

hmm, what do they call the bullfighting rings in spain? that might be a possibility considering the opposing teams come here to fight the bull(The Texans), and you know when that battle red comes out, we never lose, only the bullfighter loses.

I want to say they call the stadium an Arena..I went to Spain many years back and went to an event called "THE PLAZA OF TOROS"....How about "THE PLAZA OF PAIN" I figure after we beat an opponent at Reliant,Toro could act like he is goring an opposing player, stomping him in the ground (HURRY UP SEASON!!!!!!!!!!)

Well, if whoopin butt is what will get the nickname, we may have a long wait to have the stadium earn a nickname.....but we can still gloss it what we wish.
Where I used to sit......(North EndZone), one might suggest "The Devil's Playground"!

Why not just rename the team...the Texas Thunderbears?? What's up with the Arena League nickname?

A word of caution, guys. I don't know if anyone brought this up yet because I haven't read a few pages of posts, but I seem to remember the Oilers dropping that "House of Pain" nickname because guys like Ernest Givens and company were getting their heads clocked by opposing DBs of teams who took offensive to that name (among other things, like Glanville's style of coaching, I suppose). I was in high school in those days and remember it pretty well. I loved that nickname, but I don't wanna see guys taking late shots (or otherwise illegal ones) at Johnson, know what I mean.

Plus, this is football. You don't take extra shots because of the name of the stadium.

It's was well documented that the HOP self declaration gave opponents extra incentive coming into the Dome but you can't argue with the Oilers home record of 16-3 during what I consider the HOP era. Last edited by aj.; 06-05-2005 at 10:53 AM. |

Personally, I'm waiting for our defense to be good enough to have a nick-name.
It seems like all of the great NFL teams have had a great name for their defense.
