Default As GM I would...

Here is the deal. Bob McNair has lost his lid and appointed you GM. His only instructions to you are get the Texans in the playoffs this year. You have total control over the players, trades and coaching changes. What would you do? and Why?

I will start by saying that I would immediatly rehire Casserly and then resign. Stay the course for this year. My reasoning is simple. We have improved every year. This will be the first year that we really have Capers defense in place with the personal that Casserly and Capers wants. We have matured another year on offense and Carr is ready to explode. The coaches have also matured for another year. I think that this year will be real special.

Let me get this straight. You would rehire Casserly and then quit?

I guess I would hang around for a while playing xbox with the players and smoche with McNair and get lots of cheesy photos with the cheerleaders. Then after that yea I would leave it to Casserly can't think of a better person to run the show.

I would start by trying to figure out how Washington keeps bringing on high priced free agents every year with out going over the cap. Then I would try to implement that stratgy on a smaller scale such that the Texans get an influx of talent quickly.

Washington is just postponing their big cap hit. They will have a ton of issues in 2007-2008. You do NOT want to emulate their cap management.

That's sort of a cop-out isn't it. Posing a question of pretending to be the GM, then saying you would quit. LOL. At least have the cajones to answer your own hypothetical.

Not to knock another answer too badly, but whatever happens, don't hire Done88 Bob!

Well, some of what I would do is "water under the bridge". Also, I don't know the details of the cap, so it's easy for me to spend money. But, If I was in charge of the offseason, I wouldn't have done the PB deal for a 2,3, and Glenn. That's way too much to give up. I would have kept those picks, and gone for Khaliff Barnes in rd 2, and maybe a corner or TE in rd 3. I would have swung the deal for both 3rd rounders I think, but not a 2 and 3.

Next, I would fire Chris Palmer, and bring in a coach who is willing to use the blocking protections, schemes, etc., that will protect Carr long enough to make this offense move. That might happen this year, but from what I understand, Palmer looked like Alferd E. Newman when approcaeched about this - ie, what me worry? Why did it take four years to make these adjustments. That's unacceptable to me.

I would have gone a different direction in round 1 of the draft. Johnson may end up being a good dlineman, but I prefer to get a "difference maker" with my first pick, and I don't see a 3/4 dlineman as a real difference maker...but I could be wrong and time will tell.

I would sign Shelton if the money is right...which I think they will.

I would alter the offense to make sure that AJ is moved around alot, line him up in the slot, put him in motion, and generally try to provide more mismatches with him. I would use Mathis on reverses, and work him in slowly, as we need his speed. Our offense makes it way to easy on the defense in general imo. Our lack of a legit two way TE is a big flaw. I don't know what can be done at this late date, but if the goal is the playoffs this year as stated, I would try to get Bubba Franks, or make a trade for a legit TE. Easier said than done, and I doubt I could pull this off any better than Cass.

On defense, I am pretty happy with the personell at this point, whehter Glenn or PB. I would try to utilize the additional speed by becoming alot more agressive overall on that side of the ball.

Lastly, I would cross my fingers, and hope for the best, and realize that we cannot see alot of this.

Default I agree

I like what Porky said

Get rid of Palmer and not draft TJ with our first pick.........try to get a TE........and sign L.J. Shelton.

Plus I'd release or trade C Mckinney, DT Payne, TE Miller

There's a lot more I'd do, but, it doesn't do any good typing it out anyways.

well from how the question was stated, the draft is already over. so lets take it from there.

First i would sign Shelton ... would make his contract light in the first 2 years because he wouldn't last 2 years in my reign unless he elevated his game. At this point in the season there isn't much more that can be done. I'd leave Boulware alone cause Peek and Babin are up and coming.

There is a chance Rod Gardner from the Redskins gets released on June 1st. If so i'd cut Bradford (1 yr deal so no long term cap ramifications) and pick up Gardner who could give us a good compliment to AJ while Mathis develops.

After that i'd sit tight, i wouldn't look for anyone in the supplemental draft and would hold my picks.

Next draft if Shelton/Wand hasn't shown considerable improvement i'll draft the best LT in the draft and trade up if i have to.

Excellent choices if I say so myself. I have also heard Gardener may be a June 1 cut. He is a legit #2. Not sure what the Skins are doing lately, but I would make major plays at Shelton and Gardener, and at least get one of the two. I think we probably pass on Boulware, or he passes on us. And, I am with you as well on the stud LT next year. If we have a chance to draft Scott, Winston or another blue chipper next year, we have to do it... even if it costs us draft picks. It must be done at almost any cost imo.

I know you guys think I'm crazy. But year after year the redskins push the cap out further. Every year someone says it will catch up with them in a few years. However it never catchs up with them and they just keep spending.Too bad they don't have much in the way of talent scouting.

I can understand trading Payne, but where would that leave us at DT if we don't draft TJ?

THe teams that run the 3-4 the best all have 1st round linemen playing for them. Pittsburgh and NE both passed on so-called 'difference makers' for linemen.

pssst, porky (get in close so nobody can hear this) - The game is won in the trenches. If one grades high enough you take him if you have a need.

Another thing that is often overlooked, is simply that the defensive line is just as improtant to the defence as the offensive line is to the offence, even more so in the 3-4. You HAVE to have defensive linemen that demand double teams in a 3-4 in order for it to be effective. If that isn't a difference maker, I don't know what is.

What I'd add to that is that if you look at one of the basic problems with our passing game is the fact that Carr doesn't have a good pocket to step up into. You don't collapse a pocket from the edge. You do it from the inside. The only year we got any consistant inside pressure was with Gary Walker in 2002. Since then we have had one injury after another and no pressure to flush the QB's to the edge guys. On defense, our problem is much the same as our problem with the offense but reversed.

Cool

First thing I would do would be to fire Palmer.

I actually had TJ going to the Texans in my mock. As a matter of fact I was showing off to my girl as I simultaneously called out TJ the same time Paul did during the draft.
