I am glad to hear it really. I haven't kept up much with him, but he must have done something right in the minicamps.

He is going to have a tough time making the roster. Probably the most competition to make the roster will come at the S spots.

I don't think we signed him just to be signing someone. Rember, he is a 1st class runner in addition to trying out for the S position. I have a feeling there's more to this story than meets the eye. Could we be looking for a trade? I'm not certain what the rules are in this kind of case. This is another one of those players listed as a project. What are we going to do with all of our projects?

I'm looking forward to seeing how this guy progresses. He's definitely one heck of an athlete. May not be ready in time to make the roster, but maybe a practice squad candidate. He seems like the physical part shouldn't be a problem, just the mental, but stay tuned.

As mentioned by Houston Fan, he may be a candidate for the practice squad. I think that Casserly wanted a high number of 6th round and 7th round picks and undrafted free agents because I believe they increased the practice squad from 5 to 8 players. Some of the projects may also be eligible to be 'hidden' on the PUP list.

Lord is a great candidate for the practice squad this year. Namely because he'll protected from other teams in that it's unlikely a team would put a 1st year position player on their roster.

any team can sign any player off any other teams practice squad at any time. He will not be protected by being put on the practice squad. I think that we PUP Simmons and possibly even Earl ( but less likely). I think that Lord, Thomas, R. Orr, Lekerkerkerkerkerkerkerker, and 4 others will be on the practice squad. IMHO.

I am sure we will keep him if we signed him.

It is true that another team can sign our practice squad guys and vice versa, but they have to be activiated to the 53 man roster, and stay there a certain length of time, which I forget. IMO, with Lord learning a new position, I find it doubtful that someone will want to put him on their active roster, lessening by a great degree the risk in putting him on the practice squad. He wouldn't qualify for PUP, unless you want to explain that one to me.

I really should learn to punctuate better!!. I meant that Simmons and posibly Earl will likely get PUP'd and the rest would be on the practice squad.

Lord is a QB, S, and Special teams player. I think he has a good chance of being on the 53 man roster. Plus he can be used in trick plays.

CC has always said QB's have alot of value.

CC did say that, but it simply doesn't apply to Lord. He is not a QB in the pros. End of story. Lord's problem is finding a place for him in the secondary which will allow him to stay on the roster. Last year, we kept 4 safety's. They would need to keep at least a 5th, and perhaps, a 6th safety for him to make the active roster. Which of the following safety's are you going to cut, put on the PUP, or release - Coleman, Mcree, Burns, Brown, Walker, Earl? That is six that have more experience playing safety then Lord. True, Earl could be pup'ed, and Walker is coming off an injury, so I guess that is his best bet.....except those are SS, not FS. I see a great athlete without a position - YET. That will change in time imo.

You are right. He is no QB. But put him in on a 4th and 1 play in punt formation, and see if the return team is ready for a punt or pass/run play. The threat of him taking the snap and running the ball, or passing for a 1st down is enough to throw the team off of preping for a great punt return.

I could see
FS
1. Marcus Coleman
2. Marlon McCree
3. Jamaal Lord

SS
1. Eric Brown
2. Curry Burns

i don't think we're gonna let go of ramon walker and keep burns. walker plays too well on special teams. i think he alos has alot more potential than burns.

He might also make an excellent holder for the place kicker. Have the kicker run one way and the holder another. Oh, well, I have posted elsewhere that this year is going to be a tough one for the coaches when the final decisions have to be made. Some of you think not, but the more people post the more I think its going to be true.

After watching a few Nebraska games, I can say with certainty that no NFL team will be worried about Lord throwing for a first down......even in 4th and 1 situations.

There are depth issues at SS due to players recovering from injury. Ramon Walker tore his ACL in Week 13. Earl suffered the same injury in late October. ACL tears usually take at least a year to rehab so both Walker and Earl could be question marks until mid-season. From what I've read, Earl is closer to 100% than Walker.

Burns might be forced to backup Brown early on, something I'd rather not see. Cross fingers that Brown stays healthy. Lord has the size to play SS but I doubt if he has the nose to play SS at this point. He will probably get a chance to backup SS in camp. It would seem like his more natural position is FS but there you have Coleman and McCree and the Texans only kept two FS's last season.

If neither Walker nor Earl are physically ready, I bet that McCree will be the primary backup for both safety spots. Burns or Lord might be on the roster, but they would only be there for special teams. Lord might just be best served by spending a year on the practice squad so he can get accustomed to playing safety.
