6 years less than 9mil a year? That seems like a good deal.

Got a good deal.

On August 22, 2011 Thomas and the Cleveland Browns agreed to a 7-year $84 million extension with almost $44 million guaranteed

Long's in a contract year, and he's going to want at least the $92 million over eight seasons that Joe Thomas got from Cleveland.

That is incredible. I thought he would get 10 a year. I can't believe Ryan Clady turned down 5 years, 50 million with 28 gtd, what a doof. I think Duane Brown will be a Texan the rest of his career, he clearly cares more about the team than a few million here and there.

Comparables:

Washington's Trent Williams got 6 years 60 million, 37 gtd, last year.

Carolina's Jordan Gross got 6 years 60 million in 2009.

Philly's Jason Peters got 6 years 60 million in 2011 with 25 gtd.

Miami's Jake Long got 5 years 57 million, 30 gtd, in 2009.

Jake Long and Trent Williams are a different monster, as they were both rookie deals. Back before the cap, the rookie contracts were getting outrageous (Bradford got $50 mil guaranteed). I wouldn't really count those in, as some rookies were getting more than solid vets.

As for Brown, being a zone blocker hurts his value a little. More team run power schemes, which makes them worth more. Less people would want Brown, and with Washingout out of the market (due to Williams) and Seattle having drafted Okung, it would have been worth less than he could have. Overall, it was a good time for us (bad for him) to hit the market I think. Still, props to him for signing without some holdout or trying to drive up his value.

I don't think Brown being a zone blocker hurts his value at all. He would be excellent in a power running scheme as well. Had he hit free agency he would make much more then he got on this contract.

Well, Long and Williams are among the highest paid LTs. Joe Thomas, Gross and Peters round out the rest of the top 5. It's all relative, but you can see where the market is on LTs, and it seems we got Brown at a discount. Even the Patriots guard Logan Mankins got 6 years 51 million last year, so I'd say we did very well.

It is possible for the Texans to put some of his signing bonus into this year, but it's really a moot point given the cap roll over system.

Anyone got the numbers on it yet? I heard Ryan Clady turned down 5 years 50 million with ~28 gtd from the Broncos a few weeks ago. It will be interesting to see where Brown winds up in relation to other deals.
Thanks Dutch, this was the info I was missing. I thought they were going to have to go back to the restructuring well to make room.

Still, wouldn't be a bad idea to try to restructure Antonio Smith this year, lock him up with a smaller cap hit.

So is Brown a sucker?

Surely his agent would have told him he could get a better deal... unless there are some accelerators that would make this worth while.
