Default Superbowl Decision Tomorrow

Quote:
Super Bowl decision day is tomorrow

11:27 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 24, 2005

From 11 News Staff Reports

Houston Mayor Bill White and other city leaders are headed to Washington D.C. on a mission to bring the Super Bowl back to Houston in 2009.

Super Bowl XXXVIII was a smashing public relations and economic success for the Bayou City. When it ended, NFL Commissioner Paul Taglibue promised to bring the game back to Houston.

Houston's Super Bowl sales team will practice their pitch today, then present it to NFL owners Wednesday.

After also hearing proposals from Atlanta, Tampa and Miami, the owners will vote on which city gets the big game.

I really hope we get it but I have a feeling Atlanta will be the chosen city for 09.

We keep hearing it's either Houston or Atlanta. Miami gets it in 07, so maybe not them in 09 again, but why is it assumed that Tampa doesn't have a chance? I missed that.

Yeah, Mayor White didn't sound TOO confident this morning about it on 610. He noted head to head, we'd take it but apparently Atlanta is throwing tax-money at the owners as incentive? (speculation as I haven't heard this before).

If nothing else, maybe we'll get the Jets turn at the wheel that they were promised if they got the new stadium built.

It'd be fun to have it here again, we defintely put on a good show as a hosting city last time.

Tampa has a very good chance at getting it too. If you check their website it says that they made the best bid they had ever done or something like that, but I really hope we get it.

The Super Bowl was played in Houston's new stadium in 2004 and in Jacksonville's rebuilt stadium in 2005, and it will be played in Detroit's new stadium in 2006 and suburban Phoenix's new stadium, currently under construction, in 2008. The NFL even awarded a Super Bowl out of order to assist the New York Jets' politically charged effort to get a stadium built in Manhattan, awarding the 2010 game to the city
so who's got 2007? (and if the Jets don't get going, 2010 will be up for grabs as well)

Quote:
...commissioner Paul Tagliabue place on having each franchise in the best possible facility with maximum revenue streams... Even so, some NFL owners are occasionally wistful for the old days the first three decades of Super Bowl history when the game generally rotated among a handful of warm-weather sites..... "There are some owners who feel the Super Bowl should be played in locations where everybody can go out and play golf and enjoy the sunshine," Ganis said. "Those owners believe that is part of what historically made the Super Bowl special. So there is that side of the argument, but it is not carrying as much weight as it used to."
'cause it's all about the money - doesn't matter there's a game to play.

Ah well. We'll see soon enough if it's $$ or a god hosting city that wins it.

They can't possibly give it to Atlanta because of the weather and the fact that they are not ready now......especially after a successful one here.

Look for the announcement today to favor us.

Stinkin politics!! Atlanta will get it for that reason only! They had a bad ice storm the last time they hosted the SB, but, I dont' think the NFL will even take that into consideration. If weather was a major factor, why are they in the final four? It's all politics! Atlanta needs a new/renovated stadium and this is the NFLs way of making sure they get it.

This is a slam dunk for Atlanta, and having lived there for a year I can tell
you it's a good town and a big time convention center that is deserving of
the SB. Yes convention center and that's what the SB is, one of the countrys biggest, most sought after annual conventions and therein is the
silver lining for Houston. Historically Houston is an economic giant, but as an
industrial center and the hemispheres (if not the worlds), energy center.
Thru developement downtown (thank "Kenny Boy" for getting the downtown renaissance rolling with the Enron/Minute Maid stadium), and of course Bob McNair for building Reliant, Houston is now competing head to head with places like Atlanta & N.Texas for this convention business on a national basis.

Today's the Day!

Quote:
Countdown looms to bring Super Bowl back to Houston in 2009

09:48 AM CDT on Wednesday, May 25, 2005

By Giff Nielsen / 11 Sports

By Wednesday night it will be known whether or not Houston will host another Super Bowl.

City leaders are in the nation's capital to make their presentation to the NFL owners and officials.

There has been a lot of preparation put in for this week's presentation, which means millions of dollars for the Houston economy. The city's heavy hitters will only get 15 minutes to make their pitch for Super Bowl XLIII in 2009.

Houston will make the first presentation at 10 a.m. central Wednesday.

Atlanta is set for 10:15. Many believe the city is the biggest competition.

Miami, always a popular destination, will follow at 10:30.

Tampa Bay is also a popular destination, which presents at 10:45.

There will then be a question and answer session, followed by a five-minute final plea from each owner.

After all of that, the vote will be taken by a secret ballot until a winner is declared.

The Texans said they are ready to give it their best shot.

"All of the cities are certainly playing the card that this will help their franchise. We're not doing that. We feel we have the best bid and had a great fan experience," said Charley Casserly, Texans General Manager. "Everybody we've talked to loved their time in Houston and ours will stand on its merits."

"Regardless of what people might tell you, you never know how they're going to vote. But I think that our proposal is the pest proposal," said Texans Owner Bob McNair.

The Houston contingent has a difficult sell because owners tend to be very independent, and that's where the politics come into play
The delegation includes Houston Mayor Bill White who was leaving for D.C. Tuesday night.

The week long party in January a year ago pumped an estimated $165 million into the Houston economy and five years from now, it cold be even more.
Great, McNair took the wrong proposal! Someone call Orkin and get the right one!

This Sux! Tampa Bay awarded Super Bowl XLIII

WASHINGTON (May 25, 2005) -- Tampa Bay was awarded the 2009 Super Bowl today in a vote at the NFL owners meetings. It beat out three other finalists for the game: Atlanta, Houston and South Florida.

Super Bowl XLIII will be the fourth Super Bowl in Tampa, and the first one since 2001, when the Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Giants, 34-7, in Super Bowl XXXV. The first Super Bowl in Tampa was held in 1984, when the Los Angeles Raiders beat the Washington Redskins, 38-9, in Super Bowl XVIII.

The 2006 game -- Super Bowl XL -- will be held in Detroit, followed by Miami in 2007 and Glendale, Arizona, in 2008.

I couldn't figure out why everyone had Tampa written off.
It's a beautiful city ... with the beaches, palm trees, the skyway bridge going into the city, great weather (in February) and all the stuff those owners and their wives love.
But, I'm sure if they could go between Miami and San Diego every year with the Super Bowl, they would.

With time, if they can get into Mexico with the NFL, they'll want the Super Bowl in Acapulco.
