WR Josh Gordon - Baylor in Supplemental Draft

So this guy is going for the supplemental draft, I heard some reports that he was a 1st/2nd rounder after his sophmore year and now he is mentioned in the 3rd round.

Since we are going to have at least 2 3rds (1 compensation pick for Mario) do you guys think we can go for this guy since we already have a spot open (Dwight Jones) ?

His numbers are not bad on the yards and TDs category, his receptions are not mind blowing but he seems like a good option.

"He had 42 receptions for 714 yards (17.0 per catch) and seven touchdowns in 2010, and has been clocked in the low 4.3-second range while at Baylor."

This 6’3″, 220-pound receiver.

The question here, is there a better WR prospect in the 3rd round next year than Gordon? If not, then we should at least consider it.

Former Baylor WR Josh Gordon will enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, an NFL source confirmed.
Gordon (6-4, 225), who did not play last season after transferring to Utah, is known in scouting circles for his prototype size and athletic ability. Gordon had to sit out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. He was suspended by Baylor for the 2011 season due to violation of team rules.
In his last season at Baylor, Gordon posted 42 receptions for 714 yards (17.0 average) with 7 touchdowns. He’s also capable of returning kicks.


Gordon, who has been clocked in the 40-yard dash at Baylor as low as the 4.3’s, could go as high as the first half of the Supplemental Draft based on his upside and play making ability.


The Supplemental Draft is scheduled to take place on July 12, but the NFL has yet to confirm the date or whether there will actually be a Supplemental Draft. However, some player agents and NFL executives have been told the draft will take place on July 12, according to multiple sources.

I doubt that the Texans would spend a 3rd round pick on a player who has only one full year of experience (Gordon hardly played his freshman year). However, they should have picks in the 5th and/or 6th round for losing Allen, Brisiel, and Dreessen. The date of the draft is near, so they would need to workout and interview Gordon soon. I have to wonder what the suspension at Baylor involved. With 2 rookie WRs and a UDFA who has never played a regular season down (Lestar Jean) likely to make the team, it's unlikely the Texans would spend a future pick at the position.

The 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft will take place in a week, on Thursday July 12th. Josh Gordon is creating some buzz because he is a big (6’4″ 225) receiver with 4.3 speed. He played two years at Baylor, recording 42 receptions for 714 yards and 7 touchdowns during his sophomore year, which included a school-record 94-yard haul. Sometime in July 2011, Baylor Coach Art Briles suspended Gordon indefinitely and he transferred to Utah. Gordon will never play a down for the Utes as he made himself eligible for the supplemental draft. The red flags are everywhere.

On October 3, 2010, Gordon and teammate Willie Jefferson were arrested and charged with Misdemeanor Marijuana Possession. They fell asleep while waiting in a Taco Bell drive-through line. The police responded sometime after 2AM and found marijuana in the driver-side floorboard and the central console of the vehicle that Jefferson was driving. Hours earlier, on October 2nd, Baylor had defeated Kansas at home, 55-7. A few weeks later, Jefferson was arrested again for a marijuana offense and Briles dismissed him from the team. It seems the Baylor coach has a strict two-strike policy.

Less than a year after his arrest, Gordon received his suspension. The reason for the suspension was kept a secret but rumors are that it was marijuana related. There was no publicized arrest so it may have only been a violation observed by someone affiliated to the school or football team.

Time to bring out the rubber stamp and mark Gordon, SELFISH and UNDISCIPLINED. Selfish because he did not consider how his actions would affect his team. Forget leadership. Undisciplined because he knew he could potentially be kicked off the team for a violation but exhibited no self-control. Gordon will also not honor his commitment to Utah. Why not make an attempt to change your image and improve your draft stock? Maybe he’s just not that good and his agent saw an opportunity in a weak supplementary class.

Gordon had Oakland Raider written all over him but Al Davis has passed. He would have likely been a third-round selection like Terrell Pryor, the year before.

Many talented players have had success despite being selfish and undisciplined. Allen Iverson comes to mind, “We talkin’ bout practice.” The operative word is talent and it takes a lot to overcome character flaws.
Now, we get to the Miami Dolphins. A team that appears to have a WR need. I say appears because we don’t really know what B.J. Cunningham, Rishard Matthews, and Chad Johnson are bringing to the table. Gordon may be worth a shot in the late rounds (6-7) but someone will reach for him because of his electrifying speed.

Since 1977, the year of the first supplemental draft, only 41 players have been drafted this way.

Cris Carter was drafted in the 4th round of the 1987 supplemental draft by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bernie Kosar was drafted in the 1st round of the 1985 supplemental draft by the Cleveland Browns.

I'd put up a 6th to get this guy, but that's about it. I think a WR needy team like like Cleveland, Miami, Minnesota or Seattle will snag this guy for a 3rd. Sounds like a waste though. Size does not equal quality.

There's no way we'd invest a high supplemental pick on a guy who's as iffy as this guy right now. We just used a 3rd and a 4th for 2 receivers in this year's draft. Plus, you have AJ, Walter, and Jean. Assuming we only carry 5 receivers then that would mean you'd have to try to stash 1 pretty high to mid-round pick on the practice squad. Just seems like you're risking throwing a pick away.

I perhaps should be more concerned about our receiving corps than I am but I think they'll do all right. It may take a few games for them to gel and get the timing spot on but I do believe there's receiving talent on the roster right now with a vet sure to be added during TC.

Gordon was said to be a better talent than Kendall Wright. But there's no way BoB,Rick and Gary take this guy.

Well, we spent a third rounder on an iffy WR project too... and with less measurables than this guy.

People are putting a round 2 tag on this guy, we need a good number 2 that can stretch the field, also big and strong that can help us in the blocking game.

If you see pictures of Posey he just looks thin and weak, agile maybe but this guy already looks like a way better project...and dont tell me that he was absecent a whole year and was suspended from his team, sounds familiar?

Apples and peaches I guess (drugs and selling rings) either way I dont care if the guy is not squeaky clean as long as he can help. Plus a young player with huge potential that will come cheap.

Like a previous poster said, players with those measurables dont grown on tress.

Having said that there is 0% chances that Rick will use a second on this guy (even if he had 10 second rounders), is not his MO to take risks, thats why we are stuck with Walter as number 2 for another season and probably more.

Top supplemental draft prospect Josh Gordon conducted an individual Pro Day workout at the Houston Texans’ indoor facility on Tuesday morning. Per Adam Caplan, most NFL teams in attendance sent two personnel evaluators – in most instances their college scouting director and one area scout.

The Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, and Dallas Cowboys were among the teams confirmed to have attended. Obviously, there were Texans officials on hand, too. In all, 21 teams showed up.

Caplan reports that Gordon ran a 4.52 forty-yard dash after measuring in at 6-foot-3 1/8 and 224 pounds. Gordon recorded a 36-inch vertical leap with a 10-foot, 1-inch broad jump. He did 13 reps on the bench.

While the forty time isn’t quite as good as the pre-Pro Day hype might have suggested, it’s still very fast for a human being who weighs over 220 pounds. Gordon is big, and he can run.

This year’s supplemental draft will go down on Thursday.

I would prefer to spend a 4th on the boy, but I fear a 3rd will be required. We are hurting for quality WR's right now. I dont see how using a 3rd on him is a bad idea at all.
