The only Davis I could remember from those days would be WR Willie Davis.

I actually think its a huge problem in sports that doesn't get confronted. People should be able to express who they are no matter what their job is.

That a guy who never made the roster comes out as being gay makes the news is quite a sad state of affairs really, it highlights the problem. They say 1 in 10 people are gay, so by the averages the openning day rosters of the NFL feature ~160 gay players. Its the same across all sports too, anybody interested in seeing the devastation being an openly gay sportsman can bring just look into the Justin Fashanu story, truly tragic.

One of the modern greats of Welsh rugby, Gareth Thomas was the only openly gay professional sportsman as recently as 2010, a few more have 'come out' since but it really does require a big attitude change from the organisations, governing bodies, fans, and athletes themselves, including the gay ones who are afraid to come out.

I've got plenty of gay mates, they can count on some seriously harsh banter about it from time to time, but they all know its not a problem for me, its a lot harder when you have to play a sport in front of the terraces week in week out though.

There's a guy who works at Saks Fifth Avenue who's gay and he didn't play in the NFL either.

You know how people are. If a star NFL player (or any other sport) came out while active you know he would be made fun of, especially by opposing fans. I don't think this guy ever made it into the regular season and it's news as you say. Also sports are a very "macho" thing and that is probably why woman haven't had the same issue. Many woman athletes have been open about being gay and don't have the same stigma as a male athlete would have.
