Was thinking the same thing ..... under the new cba 4 years makes them un-restricted doesnt it ?

(Not looking forward to Cushing being a UFA).

All in due time. Task of this offseason should be to get Duane Brown to sign a contract extension. Franchise LTs don't grow on trees. Then second order of the day should be to get Barwin to extend as well.

Cushing's new contract should be given about a year or so from now.

Four years - not even subject to negotiation. All part of the recent CBA...
Quote:
The mandatory contract length for drafted rookies in rounds 2 through 7 under the new deal is four years, as it is for players selected in round 1. However, while players drafted in rounds 2 through 7 of the next 10 drafts will be free agents after four years, clubs will have the option to re-sign first-round picks at a preset amount.

With our ability to select OLBs in draft would you be surprised if they did not extend Barwin?

First-round pick Whitney Mercilus (outisde linebacker, Illinois) and third-rounders DeVier Posey (wide receiver, Ohio State) and Brandon Brooks (guard, Miami (Ohio)) are the Texans' only remaining draft picks not yet under contract.

All UDFAs signed.

I sure would. Unless he blows right the hell up this year, makes a probowl and demands the sun, the moon AND the stars....pretty sure they're interested in keeping a young, talented pass rusher around, even for a price. Just as long as that price isn't 100 million lol...

If I could extend him this year for a fair contract if I would. He's going to be a very productive starter in this system and we need to be at least 3 deep at OLB.

The 4 year contracts sound right but the $$ amount separating the 4th and 6th round picks seems a lot smaller than what I remember under the old CBA. If the numbers are right there is only $384,000 separating the 4th (99th pick) and 6th (195th pick) round picks (Not including the signing bonus.). I just don't remember it being that small of a difference.

Barwin's 2011 stats: 16 games played, 11.5 sacks, 1 FF, 47 tackles, 7 PD. He's 25 years old.

The Jaguars gave 4-3 DE 28 year old Jeremy Mincey a 4 year 20 million dollar deal after he had his first big year. Mincey stats: 16 games played, 8 sacks, 4 FF, 1 INT, 1 PD and 57 tackles last year.

28 year old Ahmad Brooks got the biggest OLB/DE deal this offseason with 6 years, $44.5 million, $17.5 million guaranteed (7.4 mill average). Brooks' stats: 16 GP, 50 tackles, 7 sacks, 1 FF, 1 PD. That looks rather pedestrian compared to Barwin's stats.

OLB Jarret Johnson signed with the Chargers this offseason for 4 years $19 million, $10 million guaranteed. His stats with the Ravens last year: 16 GP, 56 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1 FF, 3 PD. Again, rather low compared to Barwin's 2011 stats.

OLB/DE 28 year old Kamerion Wimbley signed a 5 year 35 million dollar deal with the Titans this offseason. His stats with the Raiders last year were: 16 GP, 67 tackles, 7 sacks, 1 INT, 3 PD.

If Barwin maintains production this year, I think he's in line for about 7 mill a year, maybe more depending on the OLB market. We may need to pinch some pennies to re-sign him.

the difference in contract value is the signing bonus. After the 1st and maybe into the 2nd round, rookie contracts are largely minimium scale for four years. this is one of the reason teams really want draft picks to do well enough to stick around. They are cheap.
