Default Re: Cherry Pick the real 2012 NFL Draft...

If I'm cherry picking, I'm probably keeping the pick at #58 and not trading back. That's because I like a player that went between #58 and #68. That meeans no 3rd 4th rounder, and I keep my 7th rounder.

1. Stephen Hill WR GA Tech - I just like his potential more than Posey's. And I'm able to get a good pass rusher in the 2nd.
2. Vinny Curry OLB Marshall - He's not Mercilus. But he's not far off. I would be OK with Barwin, Reed, and Curry in a rotation.
3. Brandon Brooks - G - Miami (Ohio) - I'm staying with Brooks. His potential is enormous, and I'm sold on his ability to fit in the ZBS.
4a. Bobby Massie - T - Mississippi - I've heard the negatives on Massie, but I still think he's the best player at this point in the draft.
4b. Brandon Boykin - CB - Georgia - I'm taking the CB with return skills over the WR with return skills. There are plenty of WRs left.
5. Randy Bullock - K - Texas A&M - I had thought about another kicker, but that's trying too hard. Go with Coach Joe on this.
6. Billy Winn - DE - Boise State - Don't know why this guy went so late. Pretty good d-lineman.
7. Jeremy Ebert - WR - Northwestern - Kind of a David Anderson type, but with more special teams potential. More production in the Big 10 than Keshawn Martin.

I would keep all of the UDFAs. If I could add one, it would be LSU TE Deangelo Peterson.

Default Re: Cherry Pick the real 2012 NFL Draft...

Round 1(26) - Whitney Mercilus, OLB Illinois - Can't believe he fell to 26 in weak rush linebacker class. Good Value pick and tremendous upside.

Round 3 (68) - Brandon Thompson, NT Clemson - Another guy who fell. Great fit for our system and surprised he lasted past round 2.

Round 3 (76) - Brandon Brooks, G Miami (Ohio) - Had to keep this pick, it is not every day you find a guy with his size and power that is also mobile enough to play in the in the zone blocking scheme. If this guy gets to the second level the way I think he can he is going to destroy some linebackers...Brown vs Harrison style.

Round 4 (99) - Bobby Massie, OT Mississippi - Like I said in my mock draft, we are one injury away from having Derek Newton starting at RT. That scares me.

Round 4 (121) - Greg Childs, WR - I just like this guy more than Posey. Seems to me that he has more upside. Also looks very adept at getting a clean release off the LOS vs press coverage.

Round 4 (126) - Jared Crick, DE Nebraska - Another defensive value pick. Our D line is going to be stacked.

Round 5 (161) - Ryan Bullock - Best K available in the draft and very limited FA options. Should be a day one starter.

Round 6 (195) - Micah Pellerin, CB Hampton - Good CB prospect who should have been drafted.

SW H-TOWN, yours is almost identical to mine, many of the same players. Here's mine:

1. Whitney Mercilus-OLB, I love this pick but could also go for Nick Perry-OLB as well, it's a coin toss for me.
3a. Brandon Thompson-DT, I didn't expect him to fall this far and a great fit for our system. Posey and I still can't believe he got picked here instead of Thompson.
3b. Brandon Brooks-OG, finally some athletic size on the O-line, very good pick by the Texans.
4a. Bobby Massie-OT, I can't believe he fell this far and we didn't jump on him, starter at RT in 2013.
4b. Greg Childs-WR, I like this guys size, speed, and athleticism. He'd be a great future Texan.
4c. Jared Crick-DE, very good value pick if he can stay healthy and add a little weight.
5. Randy Bullock-K, another very good Texans pick, just before other teams started taking K.
6. Brandon Washington-OG, I can't believe he fell this far, he'd be a stud at OG or serviceable at RT for the Texans.

Everyone on this list is a starter for the Texans in 2013 with the possible exception of Jared Crick and he'd be very high quality depth and certainly in the normal rotation.

are all of you guys basing your picks on knowledge learned after the draft? take Posey for instance, now that we know his background checks are clean can you honestly evaluate his on the field ability even if you have to go back two years?

I had Sanu rated higher than Posey pre-draft because Posey wasn't even on my board character/off the field issues.

Childs is coming off acl that shelved him the entire last season. Also would be based off tape two years ago, coming off injury.

Back to Posey. The Senior bowl also hurt his stock. Showed rust, could not finish plays or make easy catches. Which is a bit confusing because even though he couldn't play for Ohio State he was present @ all their practices working out & helping teammates, one would have thought he should have seized his opportunity to prove something to scouts. Well guess he did because Texans were there & liked what they saw, minus the drops. He has as good of ability to get off man as Blackmon or Floyd, he just doesn't have similar hands. Best described as average to better than average.

When all is said & done I don't think Texans could have done much better addressing someone who can become a true #2 WR in 3rd rd. while adding critical depth on the DL.

Senior Bowl is hard to gauge when you have several QBs throwing to several receivers. Their timing doesn't always mess with each other.

There were good observations and not so good observations during practices; same as most other receivers.

In the game, he ran a great route to beat the CB on the 33-yd catch.

He missed a catch in the endzone (timing must have played a little part in it); he was open and maybe was expecting a higher pass (and not a low one that Kellen Moore threw).
The main thing is that he got open unlike the previous play where the CB had good coverage on the other receiver (was it Criner or McNutt?) who ran the same route.

On the INT by Cousins, IMO, it was all Cousins' fault.
Posey ran a 10-yd out; he pushed the CB back then made the cut.
The CB had depth; the QB can't throw a corner pass like that.

exactly, so take the senior bowl with a grain of salt. what's important is actually breaking down tape on individual plays like the ones above you described. the draft is sometimes more about timing than a reflection of true value or grade. I'm guilty of under-valuing Posey grade because of character concerns, not seeing him on the field this past season & in general lack of exposure/information. This is something NFL teams have the means & access we as amateur draft geeks lack insight/info. I have no problem adjusting my opinion based off known facts & recent discoveries addressing problems in the past being resolved & giving a young person second chances.

I suppose UDFA Davin Meggett, could return kick-offs & Tridnon Holliday punt returns? But Keshawn Martin is elite with also plus ability as slot receiver all in one player.

I would rather develop Loni Fangupo to share time for depth & NT rotation. Zebrie Sanders does spark my interest however.....but not over a sure thing @ Center who could fill in @ Guard. Far as Steeter goes think that they really like Lestar Jean. Hard to find big guys who can move like Mondek, think he could be another solid player in due time like Joel Dreessen.

Still a very good list, you have an excellent handle of this draft

WOW! When I did mine it came out exactly like this. I gave thought to switching Washington with Sweeny in the 6th but with the lack of depth we have I couldn't pass up chance to add more young quality talent to the OL.

Great minds think alike. Washington was just to good of a value to pass up in the 6th round, he could probably start for alot of teams at OG this year. With Washington, Brooks, and Massie we'd have solidified that O-line starters and depth for years to come.

This is something NFL teams have the means & access we as amateur draft geeks lack insight/info. I have no problem adjusting my opinion based off known facts & recent discoveries addressing problems in the past being resolved & giving a young person second chances.
BTW, I happened to keep a copy of the Chronicle (my wife subscribe for the Sunday Edition for the Ads) to have the UDFA list readily on hand.

Below it is a piece from Jerome Solomon; he quoted Kubiak as followed.

Kubiak and Smith say that after seeing Posey in the Senior Bowl, they had no concern that he might be behind other rookies in term of development.

"He looked like himself," Kubiak said.
"I studied him real hard as a junior, and after watching him in that all-star game he looked like a better player than when I saw him as a junior.
I really liked what I saw."

1) Kevin Zeitler, OG
3) Brandon Brooks, OG
3) Chris Givens, WR
4) Ladarius Green, TE
4) Ron Brooks, CB
4) Jared Crick, DL
5) Randy Bullock, K
6) Chad Diehl, FB

Same UDFA's. Still cut Jacoby.

I'm not upset at the haul that we got at all. I love what we did overall, but I would have loved this even more.
