The right ACL tear that he sustained and was repaired in high school is probably the origin of his cartilage destruction. ACL tear is commonly accompanied by cartilage damage. and later arthritic changes from exposed bone. In January, it was reported that he had floating cartilage in that same knee that bothered him throughout the 2011 season. That floating cartilage no doubt was abrading and cutting through previously unaffected cartilage, thus exposing even more boney surface.......more surface requiring microfracture surgery, more arthritic changes with more expected chronically progressive pain, a longer and more unpredictable ultimate recovery. If cheap enough and a willingness to IR him, he would be an interesting pickup. He could come back for a couple of years if things went well. But progression of problems with this knee are one of the few things that are likely to be predictable.
