Default Jets go to Outback for TE

Quote:
The Jets have signed rugby player Hayden Smith from Australia, according to his personal coach.

Tim Brewster, the former University of Minnesota coach, tweeted Saturday the Jets and the 6-foot-6, 265-pound Smith have agreed to a deal. The team has not confirmed the signing.

Smith is projected to be a tight end in the NFL. Brewster mentored Smith and believes the 26-year-old has a huge upside.

ďA lot of coaches shy away from guys who havenít played the game, because it is an exhausting process,Ē Brewster told The Daily Telegraph of Australia. ďTo me, thatís the exciting part. Taking a piece of clay like that. And I am going to tell you Hayden Smith is one beautiful piece of clay. Just mold him into what you want him to be.

Interviewed by his rugby team on his pending move to the NFL:

IMO he has about a 1% chance of success, does he not? Which means if he actually does pan out, this would become one of the biggest stories in sports, would it not?

Further still, imagine Tebow takes over and leads the Jets to wins, with Hayden Smith as his primary target? BSPN would implode, would it not?

This has been attempted before. The Cowboys tried out Jonah Lomu from the All-Blacks after the 1995 Rugby World Cup at TE.

He was real big and damn fast. The only problem was that he had zero understanding of American Football.

Here's a pretty good Bleacher Report article about it.
