Default Jay Glazer reporting the salary cap will be 120.6 m set on Monday

That's not even a half million increase, that doesn't help us at all.

Quote:
It was getting lonely being the one of the only outlets writing anything about the whereabouts of the 2012 salary cap. FOX’s Jay Glazer, who has been cranking out more scoops lately than a creamery worker on meth, says via Twitter that he’s hearing the number, when unveiled on Monday, will be $120.6 million per team.

That’s not much of an increase at all over the 2011 amount, $120.375 million.

At a time when the NFL continues to see increased popularity and revenue, an essentially flat cap seems odd, to say the least.

As we’ve been told, unexpected increases in benefits held the cap down. Another factor is the return of the performance-based pay system, which sets aside $3.46 million per team that otherwise would boost the salary cap. Some league insiders believe that this specific payment, which gives significant payment to players with low salaries but extensive playing time, was omitted in 2011 in order to keep the cap on the right side of $120 million.

Unfortunately that's where I figured it was going to end up. Poop on a stick.

Yep, nobody paying attention should be surprised by this - particularly the Texans FO.

This.

Even Charlie Casserly predicted this months ago. Next year it should resume moderate annual increases of 5-10%

It doesn't help the teams but it sure helps the owners wallets.

Cap won't see a huge increase until the new tv contract that hasn't been a secret.

NFL is taking away millions of dolllar of salary-cap space from Cowboys and Redskins for how they front-loaded deals during uncapped year.

Tears of joy.

10 million from the cowboys and 36 million from the skins. They are allowed to spread it over 2 years. Wow

The money's directed towards the other 28 teams, excluding the raiders and saints. 1.6 million

Wasn't the cap $129M before the lock out? They said they dropped it last year, because of the lockout... I would have thought there would be some increase to get back to pre-lockout level.

The owners aren't making any less money, isn't the cap based on revenue?

The benefits package has increased and that lessons the money available for the cap calculation. In addition, the bonus package for players who out perform their contracts (such as Arian Foster) was not in place this year but has been reinstituted and reduced the available cap number by about $3.6 mil.

The cap is based on revenue, and the players aren't getting as big a share of it as they were under the previous CBA.

Quote:
After a virtual 50-50 split of revenues with players under the previous labor deal, the NFL owners increased their share to 53% of revenues that some project could top $20billion a year by the end of the decade.
