The key number is the guaranteed which is "only" 20.75 M, that's a good deal
IMO for the Texans. And the bulk of the comp is over 3 years while Arian should be in his prime (26, 27, 28).

Regarding Myers.

Center Chris Myers is a guy they really can’t afford to lose. But a tag number of $9.5 million factors in left tackle contracts as there is one tag number for all offensive linemen. I think they should put it on him if they can, hopefully as a stopgap to buy time to negotiate something long term. I don’t know their cap specifics right now, but believe it would be awfully difficult to make this work.

signing bonus is included in 2012

eg. 12m signing bonus + 6m sal in '12
3m bonus + 3M SAL IN '13
3m bomus + 3m sal in '14

$18 million in 2012 refers to the signing bonus + 2012 salary. So, the bonus is probably $15 million spread out over the life of the contract. If so, Foster would count $6 million against this year's cap: $3 million prorated bonus, $3 million salary. But, he would physically collect $18 million in 2012

I don't think that is all coming off the cap. I think it is his base salary, which will come off the cap, plus part of his guaranteed money that equals up to $18 million this year....

so possibly 6.5 base plus 11.5 for the guaranteed money or something like that is what I am guessing....

Your numbers don't add up because you are double counting the signing bonus for 2013/14. That's only 24 million paid out over 3 years. I think Dale got it right with the 15 mill signing bonus and 3 million salary in 2012. Sounds about right to me, but I would guess the signing bonus is a little lower than that.

ya it was just an example... and fwiw i wasnt double counting, i just presumed he wouldnt be getting the whole garuntee in the signing bonus

Glad to that we were able to lock him up. $18M this year is a lot for a RB.

Good work on his agent's part. Teams are known for using RB up then dumping them during the final few years of deals when the players were supposed to make the most money.

Those so called "back loaded" deals rarely work out for the players. Foster and his agent did the smart thing.

$18M for a RB stings a little, though.

This is great news on Foster but it does leave the questions open now about Mario. My thinking, and maybe it's backwards, was that the Texans would renegotiate with other players to free up more money 1st, and then sign Mario next. After that, start signing Foster, Myers, Brisiel, etc with what they had left over. Now I'm wondering if this means they won't try to sign Mario and let him go to FA.

I'm not sure fourth is "fair" but...it seems about right.

CJ was coming off a monster season, and both he and AP represent probably a larger value overall to their team than Foster does to us. (Well, CJ did)

And DMC plays for the Raiders, where all decisions are decided by a round of Plinko.
