Default Sports Most Unlikeable Players

Interesting list by Forbes, I'm surprised Kris Humphries is so high on it. He actually passed Lebron James? What the hell for?

Here's the top 10:

Athlete - Unlike %
Michael Vick 60
Tiger Woods 60
Plaxico Burress 56
Ndamukong Suh 51
Kris Humphries 50
LeBron James 48
Kobe Bryant 45
Terrell Owens 45
Alex Rodriguez 44
Kurt Busch 42

Quote:
We’ve recently seen it by league, how about overall? Over the past few months we’ve looked at the most disliked players in the NFL (Michael Vick) and NBA (Kris Humphries).

When putting the most disliked athletes from all sports under one roof, Vick and Humphries still make the cut. In fact Vick is still right at the top. But the NFL and NBA bad boys do share the stage with golf (Tiger Woods), baseball (Alex Rodriguez) and Nascar (Kurt Busch).

That’s the result of the latest surveys conducted by Nielsen and partner E-Poll Market Research, measuring public attitudes toward pro athletes. Players named on the list were those that scored the most responses from people describing them as athletes they “dislike”;”dislike somewhat” or “dislike a lot.” Candidates are limited to those scoring at least 10% awareness with the public (hence, no hockey players).

Vick, who has led a lot of these lists over the past couple of years, continues to struggle with casual NFL fans who know him mainly for his dog fighting legal mess, even as close followers of the sport love him. Vick’s high awareness number (42%) suggests he’s a known quantity outside the hardcore NFL crowd. “His awareness is up there with Peyton Manning, but a lot of it is people knowing him for the wrong reasons,” says Stephen Master, VP of Sports for Nielsen.

The past year has brought a fair amount of turnover on the fans’ target list, with the likes of Mark McGwire Randy Moss and Manny Ramirez fading from the collective consciousness. Ben Rothlisberger, who still rates high on the dislike meter, nonetheless dropped out of the top ten as he put more distance between himself and the sexual assault allegations of 2009 (he was never charged). And while owners are included in the polling, none made it this year. The Raiders’ Al Davis passed away in October, while the Cowboys’ Jerry Jones was overlooked this time around, perhaps due to the relatively low profile he kept during his team’s mediocre season. Both were on the 2011 list.

Taking their places are Plaxico Burress, fresh off a prison term for gun possession, Kris Humphries, thanks to his dalliance with Kim Kardashian and reality TV, and Kurt Busch, the Nascar driver whose temper tantrums resulted in a divorce from his Penske Racing team. And for the ultimate 180 degree turnaround, look no further than Detroit Lions defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh. Just four months ago, Suh led Nielsen-EPoll’s survey of most liked players in the NFL. But his reputation took a sudden hit after a highly publicized stomping of a Green Bay Packer offensive guard during a nationally televised game on Thanksgiving Day. Suh got hit with a two-game suspension and bruised image.

“He went from being so popular to being a pariah in one season,” says Master. The good news for Suh is that he’s a young player who can shake off a mistake if he keeps it clean from now on. Humphries is in a similar situation – his tabloid exploits with Kardashian figure to become old news pretty quickly, meaning he won’t be on many people’s hate list a year from if he sticks to basketball. Vick’s incident was more serious, but it too will fade with time. Just a bit more time.

Kurt Busch and NASCAR wish they were on the same plane as the rest of those folks.

Have you ever participated in any motor racing event? Its definately a sport, just try 20 minutes karting and see how you feel after it, the physical exertion of driving on the limit is incredible.

I'm not disagreeing that it is a sport, but I always found folks intepratations of "sport" vs. "non-sport" slightly interesting...

Humphries and Plaxico don't belong on this list. They're big dopes who did stupid crap(Marry a whore in one case and be stupid enough to stick a gun in your pants in the other).

They get a shake of my head and a wag fo my finger for being dumbasses, but I don't dislike them.

I even consider golf a sport. I'm not saying they're unskilled...just that racing isn't a sport. It's a competition.

Isn't funny a few years ago most if not all of them were very well liked and all of them in recent years has done something to just ruin their own rep? It really is a real shame to think about.

Driving long distances in a Cavalier should be a sport.

No pillows to sit on. That's cheating.

From Google;
Quote:
sport/spôrt/
Noun:
An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others.
And Timekiller, driving around town and racing are altogether different, these guys are pulling 3.5G the whole time in 120 degree heat for hours on end. That takes physical strength and endurance as well as the skill of driving at those speeds.

I'd always thought Nascar was a bit of a joke tbh, a mundane sport driving round in a circle all day, I'm still no great fan, it has nothing on F1, or Touring Cars for that matter, and certainly nowhere near as good as MotoGP, but there was a really good Richard Hammond piece on it in last weeks Top Gear and it gave me a new found respect for the drivers in it.

That said, JPM was interviewed in it and he's piled on the pounds a bit, he would never have fitted in an F1 car at that weight!!

I can see the list as a reasonable result from a cross section of the sports country. Plaxico I could go either way with. Bringing a gun to a nightclub, offensive stupidity that makes me in the "dislike" pool of fans.

As a personal off-the-cuff list?

(in no particular order and all different names from the original above - also past sports figures)

Ichabod Gothitagain Innegan
Ray Knight
Tommy Lasorda
all Chicago Cubs from 2000-2010
Joe Morgan
George Walker (UH basketball forward '75-6/'79-80; and he knows why!)
Jared Allen
Pittsburgh secondary (1970's) - dirty bastards.
Sam Wyche/Boomer Esiason (two for one, sorry)
Carlos Beltran
Bud The Dud Selig (non-athlete and 11th entry, but no dislike list is complete without him)

Honorable Mention
Basketball officials while in Salt Lake City

Not a good list, off the cuff w/o much thought.

Besides fatigue, I would add strategy, luck, teamwork, reaction time, reflexes, stamina and a number of other things.

Throw in the physicality of the pit crew and I would say you have a sport.

Sure your not going to tear an ACL short of a wreck, but you have to have the skills and these days the stamina, to race in most if not all motorsports.

It's not the NFL, but it's more than chess!!!!

What about bowling, doesn any one consider bowling a sport. Its physical in nature, but you can eat nachos, and drink beer while you do it, and 350 lb out of shape dudes can excel at it. So I agree with you that it is interesting to see where people draw the line......

Chess is a sport! Think of the endurance of sitting in uncomfortable chairs for hours...

And lifting those pieces over and over again. The reps are brutal.

I personally can't stand watching golf, and I get far, far too angry when I play it (my talent doesn't quite match my ambition when deciding what shots to make) so I steer well clear.

Tiger Woods, why anyone would be bothered by what he gets up to in his personal life is beyond me, most people have 'played away' in their time to some degree or other yet because he was supposedly 'perfect' people feel cheated themselves.

Sure, his wife can be angry, why your average Joe would is beyond me.

How did Albert Haynesworth not make the list? I guess what he has going for him is that he is forgettable.

ASIDE: As a rule of thumb, if your body is the machine, then it is a sport. While I do at times find car racing entertaining, it is not a sport in my mind. The engine does the work; the driver is a skilled operator. I can drive a jackhammer like nobody's business, and I am dog tired after 2 hours of it, but that's not a sport. Anyway, I don't mean to poke or prod, I just wanted to share my thoughts on the subject. I recognize many folks feel passionately about NASCAR and F1 racing, so I hope my own personal opinion does not offend.

Now, if only triathlon could get 25% of the airtime NASCAR does...
