There always an element of if is a big/popular name the Texans (or whatever team) should sign/trade for/ bribe or what ever else to get him on the team. Sometimes it make sense, but most of the time its just idle chatter. Only harm that can come, is when people confuse not getting the biggest name with cheapness/not wanting to win.

Because Manning has said he would be open to being cap friendly. If a deal is possible you have to at least see what the details are

I don't think it's so much about taking this scenario seriously as it is fun to just speculate about it.

Just because he is willing to do an incentive based contract doesnt mean its going to be cheap. I still think whoever signs him will either get a broken player and be -1 starting QB, or he does play and they pay a **** ton in incentives.

I still dont think he will ever play again.

He certainly is closer to playing again than not. He has to work on getting full range and velocity back. I think he plays again and for me I dont care where he plays Id still like to see him on the field again.

This is a very good article.... lots to read... but all good stuff.

Wide receivers on this team have three basic functions: 1. Never drop passes to move the sticks; 2. Run your routes precisely/do your blocks so the plays work; 3. Create explosive plays . Yes, they would like explosive plays, but the never drop passes thing, do your job is more important. No team is good with long down and distance, but the Texans put a priority of positive yards and no negative yard plays.

It is an excellent piece and it brings up a lot of my thoughts on taking a WR, like waiting because the draft is so deep at the position. But, I do want to comment on something said in regards to Jerry Rice.

4. Texans system doesn’t demand 1st round WR talent but it is nice. Arguably, the best three wide receivers in the Kubiak-style offense over history are: Andre Johnson, Jerry Rice and Rod Smith. Johnson and Rice were first round picks, both smart players with very high work ethics. Johnson came into the league with an unusual combination of insane size and speed. Rice is the prime example of a great wide receiver with terrible timed speed. Certainly that pick turned out pretty good, but you wouldn’t want to make a habit of drafting slow wide receivers in the first round unless you were a GM who liked to be fired.

Jerry Rice never went to a speed camp to run a 40 yard dash. If he had trained for the 40 (rather than football), he would have timed well. Because Jerry Rice is a perfectionist.

"If you lined me up to race someone during the 40-yard dash, they'd beat me," Rice said. "But you put me on a football field, in a uniform, with someone chasing me, the hair on my back flew up and I was able to run by people. I think people underestimated my speed. I ran those routes over and over, until it was like ... perfection. That's why I ran away from people."

When I hear draftniks like Mike Mayock or Mel Kiper gawk over 40 times, I cringe. Look at the film (or now, tape). Is the guy fast on the field? If he is, then he's fast. If he's not fast on the field, it doesn't matter what the stopwatch says on the track.

And I'm one that thinks a 1st rd WR isn't necessarily a no-brainer need. If we can't afford to keep Mario then OLB becomes the top ranking need to fill in the draft. If Myers gets away then we'll need a new C (or OG if Caldwell can step into the center role). and so on and so on....
